A Particular Baptist is not a Baptist who insists the water is just the right temperature. It is one who holds to the Calvinist doctrine that Christ died not to redeem all of us but just the elect. Today I came across this little Particular Baptist chapel just off the Aylestone Road in Leicester. According to The Mystery Worshipper: The congregation used to be based in the city centre, in a building that could accommodate a congregation of 600+. As numbers dwindled and the building became surplus to their needs, the church acquired this building - and regard it as ...

On Wednesday, we gained two major concessions on the new parking regime in Ludlow. Parking charges will only apply until 6pm, not 8pm in the town centre. The current system of reduced parking charges for market traders will continue. We also gained the promise of two reviews into the impact of the changes, one after six months and the second after 12 months. We have spent an entire year fighting for a parking regime that works for Ludlow. We have only got half way there. And there is so much more to do. When does the new parking regime come ...

1968 really was a year to remember, what with the Prague Spring, the Paris May events, the assassination of Robert Kennedy and the Tet offensive in Vietnam, to mention but a few highlights. Fifty years on there have been many commemorations of individual events, but novelist Barry Stewart Hunter takes the year's complete timeline as [...]

This is the rather unfortunate option I was offered after signing The Independent's petition backing up its call for a referendum on the terms of the Brexit deal.

Embed from Getty Images I have a guilty secret. Every so often, I retreat to Greggs for a Steak Slice, sausage roll, cup of tea and a read of last Saturday's New York Times. I get quite excited by the Anglo-American mixture of it all. Why last Saturday's New York Times? – I don't hear you cry. Well, it would be a bit OTT for me to have each day's NYT delivered to me. So I have an arrangement with the local W.H.Smith's whereby they hold each Saturday's edition for me. Sometimes I get a bit behind with reading them. ...

There was an interesting article in the Independent almost a year ago today by Steve Bullock, somebody who worked at the UK Representation to the EU from 2010-2014 where he negotiated several EU regulations for the UK in European Council working groups. He has also worked for the European Commission and the Department for International Development's Europe Department. So it is fair to say that he is an expert, not that that will impress Michael Gove. Many of the points he makes have already featured on this blog but it is worth repeating them again. Indeed I covered this article ...

Following on from public opinion continuing to move in favour of holding a referendum on the terms of the Brexit deal and The Independent throwing its editorial support behind the idea, comes this from The Economist: The idea of revisiting the [2016] referendum is back in play. By law, Theresa May's government cannot sign a Brexit deal without MPs' approval. And in the past couple of weeks it has begun to look as if Parliament will reject any deal. The Labour opposition has set six tests for the agreement, which look designed to be unpassable. The Conservative Party, meanwhile, is ...
