When you follow the lane past Saddington reservoir you climb a wooded hill and emerge above the village of Gumley. On that high ground you will find the village cricket ground, which I blogged about nine years ago. There was a match in progress, allowing me to show you the measures used to control traffic on the very minor road that crosses the field of play. The way the ground blends into the open countryside, and the village war memorial beside it, give you the feeling that you are looking at a painting. It would fall halfway between the Symbolists ...

Six of the Best 811

"At many junctures in the book, the ability to think historically deserts its author. He describes men such as Hitler as 'short' when their height (5ft 8in in his case) exactly matched the average height of European men at the time; and he describes Churchill as a 'Victorian Whig', though the Whigs' attitude to the state in legislation such as the 1834 Poor Law was entirely different to Churchill's." In 2014 Richard J. Evans wrote an enjoyable scathing review of Boris Johnson's study of Winston Churchill. Oz Katerji looks at the reaction to Israel's rescue of the White Helmets from ...

The Möbius strip

I have a Möbius strip. On one side of it is Boris Johnson, on the other, any of the nastier ayatollahs. They merge seamlessly into one another. Johnson's jibe about letter boxes has had exactly the required effect - attention. Two separate issues become one here: Muslim patriarchy and Johnson's pursuit of power. Photo by besshamiti on Plixs Johnson's article about the clothing of Muslim women is formed as a liberal wrapper round a racist dog whistle. The liberal wrapper serves to deflect expected criticism of the dog whistle. Johnson is not a liberal. He adopts liberal policies, or at ...

The Class 27 that has been in the sidings at Knighton Junction, a mile south of Leicester, all summer has moved on. No longer will the tracklaying machines have to listen to its tales of the Scottish Highlands and hauling the Tilbury boat train. Thanks to the anonymous commenter who gave me this news over the weekend. It is now to be found at the UK Rail Leasing depot just north of Leicester station. I checked as I passed Knighton this evening and, sure enough, the Class 27 was gone.

Thirty six seconds of cine film from the British Celanese Gala Day, held at their social club in Spondon, 1969. I have rather less hair these days and haven't troubled a barber in months. That's probably "a good thing", judging by my style in this clip. British Celanese Gala Day, Spondon, 1969 from Tim Holyoake on Vimeo. Here's another a nice little innovation being tried out, this time from London Liberal Democrats and as featured in the latest email to party activists: London Region are offering a prize for the Local Party with the highest percentage of members attending – our prize is £250 worth of campaigning support – this could be used for leaflets, street stall equipment or digital campaigning. We are also offering financial support to a limited number of young people and those in full time education to attend (based on the qualifying criteria for membership of the Young Liberals) – please alert any ...

Thanks to everyone who took part in our fun quiz on Friday – and to those who thought about it but were stumped by it! We showed the photo above, which I took on my recent holiday. We asked you to name the location of the photo, which was mentioned wittily in a distinguished Liberal MP's auto-biography. The answer was Bergen railway station in Norway, which Jo Grimond, Liberal party leader 1956-1967, mentioned in his auto-biography (see below). The first person to give the correct answer in our comments threads was Charles Dundas. Charles receives the accolade of "LDV Super ...

House-building survey

A planning application has been submitted to Gateshead Council for housing on land between Starling Walk and Sun Hill in Sunniside. I have no problem with housing going onto this site but as ward councillors we had always made it clear to officers that this site should be used for housing for older people. 4 years ago, the old Sun Hill residential accommodation was replaced by the new Sun Hill.

This week's damning editorial about current Lib Dem performance and prospects in The New Statesman will have struck a chord amongst many Liberal Democrat supporters and activists. I know that the world is unfair, and that we are mass-media-invisible, but nonetheless our lack of progress has to be a real present worry. Mucking up critical votes on what is supposed to be 'our' issue above all - opposition to Brexit - only compounds the sense of drift. I'm glad that Caron Lindsay thought that Sir Vince Cable was 'sparkling' on Pienaar's Politics recently but I fear that such appearances are ...

I was going to observe a dignified silence over British MP Boris Johnson's latest stunt. His aim was to gain attention and notoriety, and I didn't think he deserved any help from me. But with a week gone and the story still being run prominently by BBC Radio 4, my silence must be broken. The ... Continue reading Boris Johnson raises the spectre of Islamophobia

By far the most shocking international story of last week was not the revelation that Donald Trump had initially asked to be sworn in over a copy of 'The Art of the Deal' rather than the Bible, or even the allegation that he frequently uses the 'N-word', but the way that Canada has been left isolated by Western democracies over their criticism of civil rights abuses in Saudi Arabia. As this website outlines, Saudi Arabia are angry at the Canadian Government for openly denouncing a crackdown on rights activists in their country. Human Rights Watch has the details: On June ...

Thank you to everyone who has got in touch about 82 bus reliability problems since we alerted you in June to the fact that it is sometimes missing out the Chipping Sodbury section. At a face-to-face meeting last week your Focus Team councillors challenged First Bus bosses about this failure. They said that because the route goes through a number of traffic hot spots it is vulnerable to getting badly delayed and if that happens they cut out Chipping Sodbury and turn round at Yate. When we asked what happens to people waiting at the Clock Tower, their reply was ...

Last month, campaigners near where I live won a by-election where the key issue was that of second home owners and their impact on local communities and services. This weekend, I'm spending a few days in Rhode Island, home of the chicken, and enjoying the tranquility of the shoreline near the Massachusetts border. Whilst doing so, I've been discussing some of the issues surrounding how you maintain healthy rural communities, especially in places popular as holiday destinations. As you do, right? One of the challenges is how you ensure that local workers, whose salaries are often far lower than those ...

Welcome to Rhode Island, the Ocean State and the smallest in the Union. First to declare independence, and last of the original thirteen States to join the United States, it's probably the least remarked upon part of New England. It is, having spent the weekend in a quiet corner near the Massachusetts border, rather pretty and, if you're in the area, worth a peek. So, why the steamed clams? They're something of a delicacy in these parts, and thrive in the absence of walruses, whose diets consists largely of clams. And, despite my historic lack of enthusiasm for seafood of ...
