There was alarming news from the Leicester Mercury earlier this week: Councillors are set to approve the development of a £26million Leicestershire testing track for driverless cars. Mira Technology Park wants to build the facility on 83 acres of land next to its existing vehicle testing centre at Higham-on-the-Hill near Hinckley, partially within the registered Bosworth Battlefield site. Heritage watchdog Historic England says it fears the scheme could cause some harm to the battlefield where Richard III lost his crown and life in 1485.The track is government funded and planning officers at Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council have recommended that ...

I have no idea, but Adam Payne and Ben Gartside wrote this afternoon on Business Insider: Sir Vince Cable is set to give a major speech on Friday, September 7, multiple sources have told Business Insider, amid speculation that he planning an early resignation as leader of the Liberal Democrats. Senior sources have told BI that Lib Dem members will be invited to a speech in the first week of September, one week before the party's autumn conference, in which Cable will make announcements about reforms and the party's future. Two senior sources — a well-placed Lib Dem and a ...

I like to think that I'm one of those people who always wants to help, where I can, a person with a disability and here's a case where we can all try to help. Below is a link to a 38 Degrees petition:- Please click on the link and add your name if at all possible. Surely there's no logical reason why an Assistance Dog should be refused entry to a music festival but it's seemingly the case here. If we all get behind this petition maybe we can persuade the organisers of Fusion Festival to back off and ...

.@VinceCable on the media round ahead of his speech to #PeoplesVoteNE pic.twitter.com/inw6LnmmrI — Lib Dem Press Office (@LibDemPress) August 25, 2018 In a speech to the North East of England People's Vote rally in Newcastle this afternoon, Liberal Democrat Leader Vince Cable said: Some say a People's Vote would cause aggro, all the lies of 2016 would be repeated. We need to anticipate that. We need an adjudicator who can look at what campaigners say and fact check them properly. Brexit has been imposed on young people to the loss of their futures. What I want to see when we ...

Portsmouth Council has quite the tradition of councillors quitting their party or changing party. The latest is Conservative councillor and former Cabinet member Jim Fleming who has left the party to sit as an independent: In a series of messages with The News, Cllr Fleming said: 'I have also resigned my party membership. 'The issue is not centred around Brexit, but it's certainly a symptom.' The former Portsmouth North Conservative Association chairman added: 'My general view on the subject is that my views and values remained the same, while those of others within the Conservative Party have either diverged from ...

That was the question recently asked on Quora, to which my answer was: What seats do you think the Liberal Democrats will gain and lose in the 2020 election? The most promising territory currently looks to be areas which voted Remain (as that's the big distinctive issue for the Lib Dems) and which are held by the Conservatives (as it's almost always much easier for a party out of power to take seats from a party in power rather than from another party out of power). That would match up with where the Lib Dems are currently doing well in ...

This is the only pedestrian/cycle access off School Lane without a long detour to the entrance to the new Poppy Fields estate. As a level/accessible entrance/exit to the new Maghull North Station has still not been created off School Lane, despite the station being open for a couple of months now, I thought it was time to put some pressure on Merseytravel. My previous posting on this matter from 23rd July is accessible below:- With the help of Merseytravel Committee member Cllr. John Dodd I got a response from Merseytravel which firmly puts the ball in the court of ...

I recently raised, with the City Council's Roads Maintenance Partnership, concerns on behalf of residents about the state of part of the north side of Roseangle. I have now received the following positive response : "An order has been raised by the Road Maintenance Partnership inspector for a pothole to be carried out with a timescale for completion of approximately thirty days."

As a local councillor, I deal with the police a lot in an effort to resolve various incidents that impact on my community. Most of this is informal, but there are also bi-monthly PACT meetings in which the police and local councillors are able to interact with the community. The story in this piece on the BBC is very familiar to me, therefore. They report that tens of thousands of callers to the police non-emergency line have hung-up in frustration at long waiting times. A total of 135,389 calls to Welsh police via 101 were abandoned or redirected last year ...

BlacKkKlansman *****

Spike Lee burst into the mainstream film world's consciousness with his 1989 feature Do the Right Thing, but although that won him a best screenplay award, it lost out for best film to Bruce Beresford's gentle comedy Driving Miss Daisy, about which Lee was most displeased. He courted controversy the following year with some of his comments [...]
