Down at the Liberal Democrat Conference in Brighton, the Glee Club is under way. At Lord Bonkers' insistence, I am reproducing his foreword to the new Liberator Songbook. For myself, I am more excited at having contributed a new verse to 'Exmoor Bah T'at'. Bonkers HallTel. Rutland 7 There was a faint tang of autumn in the air when I walked my estate this morning, so it must be time to contribute a foreword to the new Liberator Songbook. I write these lines with a heavy heart as I heard only the other day of the sad death of Aretha ...

Sky news have the story on their web site – see link below:- As if we don't have enough to worry about with our economy tanking because of Brexit! Very sobering indeed with Brexit and potentially another financial crash hitting before we have even recovered from the 2008 crisis. If I was religious I may even recommend praying...... With thanks to Roy Connell for the lead to this posting.

The Liberal Democrats have today demanded the Government initiate negotiations within the UN for a legally binding international treaty on plastics. The treaty, set out at the Liberal Democrat conference in Brighton, would encompass phased reductions in the production, consumption and trade of virgin feedstock. It would also include a financial mechanism providing aid and capacity-building assistance to developing countries.Speaking after the debate, Tim Farron said: "The problem with plastics is not only on our shores. It is a problem that impacts the environment, communities and wildlife across the globe. "The Government therefore has a duty to lead from the front and ...

I was and still am rather puzzled by why Gina Miller decided to use time with journalists at Liberal Democrat conference to criticise other Remain campaigners. (Though see also her tweet here.) That said, her speech went down very well. So here it is in full. Gina Miller's Brighton speech Good morning and thank you. It is a great privilege to address your conference here in Brighton. Today I speak to you as a friend and someone who feels a bond with you on many issues, but may I say straight away, particularly for the benefit of the journalists here ...

Today Sky News launched a campaign to make Leaders Debates an integral part of every general election. They want an independent commission to be set up in order to set the rules on formats and participants. I was interviewed by Sky's Jayne Secker on their lunchtime news. It was broadcast from Bristol's Harbourside, opposite the [...]

Today at conference, Liberal Democrats have voted for a comprehensive plan for replacing the broken business rates system. The motion based on the report - Taxing Land, Not Investment - calls for the abolition of business rates and its replacement with a tax on land values, the Commercial Landowner Levy (CLL). The levy would remove buildings and machinery from calculations and tax only the land value of commercial sites, boosting investment and cutting taxes for businesses in nine out of ten English local authorities. Key recommendations from the motion include:Business rates should be abolished and replaced by a Commercial Landowner ...

Yesterday I was back to Brighton for day 2 of Lib Dem conference. Useful meeting in the morning about how all constituencies are being graded for targeting and a list of what needs to be done if a constituency wants to be in the top target group. I suspect Gateshead's constituencies will struggle to fulfill the criteria!

Gina Miller, businessperson and Brexit campaigner, just received a long and strong standing ovation, after delivering a spirited speech at the party conference in Brighton. Ms Miller was quick to quash media reports that she might be angling to be the next leader of the Liberal Democrats. Those rumours have presumably been spread by people who know absolutely nothing about our party. In the speech, Gina Miller referred to a non-political movement which she launched last week: I stood on a cliff top close to another seaside town last week, not minded to jump, but minded, to ensure that we ...

For the second year in a row, I am not attending Lib Dem conference. I went for ten years straight, but now, I both emotionally can't face it and also, given the decline in the party's fortune, I have no real professional reason to go (I'll be at both Labour and Tory, if any of you reading we be at either or both). While I applaud Vince's efforts to try and turn the ship around with his latest ideas about opening up the party, there was a vote that took place yesterday on the floor of conference which sums up ...

Transplant +5: The storm

The storm arrived in the early hours of this morning. I was sick and then developed a temperature of 38.3. The staff here quickly took various samples from me and I was given a chest X-Ray. That took three attempts as I appear to have very large lungs. The person who took it asked if I was a runner. I ... The post Transplant +5: The storm appeared first on ten pence piece.

It is difficult to disagree with the former president of the Confederation of British Industry, who has said that the UK government and European leaders "should be ashamed" that they have not guaranteed the rights of citizens in the event of a no-deal Brexit: Paul Drechsler said it was an "absolute scandal" that EU citizens in the UK and British nationals in Europe remained in limbo more than two years after the referendum. "Leaving people hanging by a thread of uncertainty is totally against British values, totally against European values," he told The Guardian. "We should be ashamed of the ...

Less than a year ago, the United Nations' nuclear weapons ban treaty opened for signature. States from across the world are stepping forward to sign up to prohibit nuclear weapons - over 60 on current count. This is a giant step forward on the road towards global abolition. The treaty follows decades of grassroots campaigning across the world - CND has been calling for a global ban on nuclear weapons since its founding in 1958 and we are delighted at the development. Over one hundred countries are likely to sign the treaty, but will Britain make the most of this ...

Last night at 6:15pm I went to the truly vast Oxford hall within the Brighton Hilton. You could almost hold the FA Cup Final in the Oxford Hall, it is so big. There was an excellent meeting, chaired by Miranda Roberts, which explained the supporters proposal. Miranda is the chair of the Federal People Development Committee. She took us through the process. There was a briefing on a similar scheme in Canada and within the UK Which consumer organisation. The meeting was an hour long, very well attended, and included a brief question and answer session. We were provided with ...

DUNDEE CITY COUNCIL - WEEKLY ROAD REPORT REPORT FOR WEST END WARD Forthcoming Roadworks Old Hawkhill (at Park Place) - temporary traffic lights from Monday 24 September for up to 3 weeks for new water main installation works.

Europe, housing, the economy, land tax and sustainable development are on the policy agenda today. Anti Brexit campaigner Gina Miller, not even a party member, will be giving a keynote speech. She's had some attention as a future leader of the party despite not being a member so her remarks are bound to spark media interest. The other keynote speaker is Welsh Lib Dem leader Jane Dodds. And there will, of course, be the debate on membership subscriptions which, with a big increase in the Federal Levy, may actually prove more controversial than usual. 09.00-10.00 Policy motion: An Affordable, Secure ...
