After the Royalists were defeated at the Battle of Naseby, Charles I fled north to Leicester. According to Roy Palmer's Folklore of Leicestershire and Rutland: At some stage he visited Tur Langton, where he watered his horse at what is still called King Charles' Well. (This was once the only source of water in the area, and even during the drought of 1976 it did not run dry.)Today I went to Tur Langton and found the well. It stands three fields from the village, along the footpath towards Stonton Wyville. On the way you come across some old quarrying, which ...

There were two press releases today, one of which has already been covered on these pages. Here's the other one... Cable: Arms sales to Saudi Arabia "embarrassingly compromising" Responding to Saudi Arabia's claim that journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killed in a fight in its consulate in Istanbul, Liberal Democrat Leader Vince Cable said: This situation gets murkier and murkier – Saudi Arabia seems to have forgotten about a death in its own consulate. The UK's heavy reliance on Saudi Arabia for arms sales is embarrassingly compromising in these circumstances. The government should have already suspended arms export licences to Saudi ...

It's been a wee while since so many people have taken to the streets of London to protest. The BBC reports estimates of a 700,000 crowd demanding a People's Vote in unseasonably brilliant sunshine. I'm not going to lie. Being in a space where I could see nobody but Lib Dems wherever I looked was pretty cool. My day had started at 4:45 when my alarm went off. I boarded my flight at 6:15. The pilot then announced that due to forecast fog at Gatwick we wouldn't be taking off for another hour and 45 minutes. But it might be ...

Apologies to any blog readers (any still around?!) for the long silence since my last blog post. To some extent that reflects a very busy time personally and professionally. But it also reflects a lack of time to work through the more fundamental ideas I wanted to explore here. I've been thinking alot about capitalism, marxism and liberalism- more to come one day hopefully. So, with no promises, I'll try and pick up again more regularly... Meantime, some thoughts on the First Minister's recent speech, particularly around Brexit. Reflections on the FM's Speech The First Minister spoke recently to her ...

Second paragraph of third chapter: "Come off it," said Louis Wu. "You can't breed for luck the way you breed for shaggy eyebrows!" The archetypal "Big Dumb Object", the Ringworld of the title is a million miles wide and 600 million miles across with a star in the middle and atmosphere trapped inside by rotation. Throw in some aliens and a girl who is always lucky and you have the story. The setup is very good - Niven's universe is nicely depicted, with the two sentient alien species sharing space with humanity, and then the Ringworld itself is a truly ...

The photo above is of a piece of public land (maintained by Maghull Town Council but owned by Sefton Council) at the junction of Liverpool Road South and Northway (A59). If you know of it you may refer to it by one of the names at the head of this posting, but which is right and why? I have always known of it as Bobby's Wood but that's just because someone told me it's name many years ago. I never questioned it nor did I know it seeming had a very similar name (but with a different spelling) or indeed ...

You guys should all buy his books if you haven't already. I especially rec the Laundry series. I now have tickets, ESTA, travel insurance and a healthy terror of various food items. I also spent all last night having nightmares about airports in general and going through immigration in particular. I'm sure it'll all be fine... [IMG: An animation of the burning this is fine ...

To mark Jeremy Corbyn's wishy-washy policy on Brexit, a new Labour 'Brexit Fudge' has been launched. The Labour 'Brexit Fudge', which will be handed to activists at the 'People's Vote' march in London today, is expected to be a bittersweet reminder of Jeremy Corbyn's party fudging their position on giving the people a final say on Brexit. Labour 'Brexit Fudge' has been described as a soft, dense sweet, handmade by the Labour leadership. The product will be on a limited release, exclusively for voters between now and March 29th 2019. Tom Brake said: Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour leadership have ...
