Fahrenheit 11/9 ****

Michael Moore has carved out a special place for himself in contemporary US film-making: as an intrusive, progressive Democrat who cares passionately about environmental issues, the abuse of power and the sad state of American society. So no-one is going to go to his new documentary Fahrenheit 11/9 expecting that the 45th President of the [...]

In Gateshead a bunch of conspiracy theorists are convinced that non-existent 5G technology allegedly installed in lampposts are exterminating all insects and small birds while causing mass nosebleeds, cancer and death. They allege that the 5G technology (which does not exist in Gateshead) has been installed as part of a secret deal between Labour run Gateshead Council and the Conservative

I attended the People's Vote rally on Saturday in London, along with thousands of other Lib Dem members. This is the video I made of the event. It was attended by members of all mainstream parties and by those with no political allegiance. Noticeable for his absence was Jeremy Corbyn.

As well as its incongruous but magnificent Victorian church and the remaining fragment of its predecessor, Tur Langton once had a Noncomformist chapel. According to The Churches Of Britain and Ireland page for Leicestershire, it was Congregational and closed before 1957. Like the chapel in nearby East Langton, it appears to have suffered the indignity of being turned into a garage. But it still looked fine in the autumnal afternoon sunshine on Saturday.

It's been a busy day in HQ, and there's news of a victory over the Government in the Lords... Lib Dems: Research shows hard border for NI puts lives at risk Research by the Liberal Democrats and PoliticsHome has shown how crucial a soft border is between Ireland and Northern Ireland, specifically in relation to emergency service call-outs. A series of freedom of information requests has shown that 182 ambulances and 270 fire engines crossed into the Republic during 2016-17 in response to 999 calls, highlighting how a hard border could potentially leave people with far slower emergency responses if ...

Andrew George, who was Liberal Democrat MP for St Ives from 1997 to 2015, is still campaigning hard. His website says: The Conservatives may have successfully clung onto this seat at the last General Election with a narrow majority. But there's a growing campaign team of people who will fight for those the Conservatives can never speak up for. The struggling majority, the inadequately housed, our NHS, our schools and colleges, small businesses and the self employed, those who care for our environment. Andrew George has vowed "not to walk away". You can join a growing campaign team. We're determined ...

The BBC has the story on its web site – see link below:- www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-45938754 That politicians call each other by such vile language (who are in the same political party!) says a lot about the current state of our politics. But hey Labour politicians have been calling each other similar and worse than what Teresa May is called by her own tribe for a long time now. The lies told about Brexit are at the heart of most of our political discord these days and the fact that our two major parties have gone off towards political extremes. Once a ...

Last Thursday afternoon I paid a farewell visit with some friends to the Donington Grand Prix collection. Although the museum doesn't close until 5th November, the contents of the display cabinets were already being packed away. The café was shuttered and empty. The number of cars also seems to have declined since I last visited [...] The post A final lap of the Donington Grand Prix collection appeared first on ten pence piece.

On 20th October, there was the "People's Vote" march in London. Whilst I support the march, it's important to remember that 700,000 people showing up on Parliament Square and then going back to their keyboards just isn't going to shift the political landscape or change anyone's mind. The overwhelming majority of people who took part in the march will have voted or supported Remain in the referendum in 2016, including a huge number of young people and EU citizens who were denied a vote at the time. Don't get me wrong - if you went on the march, you have ...

[IMG: Norbreck Castle hotel (northern section), Blackpool - DSC06518] The Norbreck Castle Hotel, Blackpool. It was here in 1988 that a special Liberal party conference was held to decide to merge the party with the SDP* One of the frustrating things about the debate over Vince's two constitutional proposals** is that I am yet to hear Vince come out and actually outline why they are needed. This is maddening. It is especially maddening because I greatly respect Vince and normally he is very good at articulating ideas and proposals. Instead, we have vague "smoke and mirrors" mutterings about somebody out ...

At Thursday's meeting of the County Council's Education, Localism and Libraries Panel, Liberal Democrats voted against the Conservative Group's proposals to set up an independent charitable organisation to run its Library Service. It increasingly appears as though the Government is a rudderles hulk, limping towards a harbour of dubious safety, and business in the Lords is reflecting that, as a series of Bills, related to Brexit, either are delayed in the Commons or await publication. Monday's main business related to the Mental Capacity (Amendment) Bill, which seeks to "amend the Mental Capacity Act 2005 in relation to procedures in accordance with which a person may be deprived of liberty where the person lacks capacity to consent, and for connected purposes". In other words, it considers who might have the power to decide ...

I well remember that moment in history when Ronald Reagan signed the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty with Mikhail Gorbachev. It was especially historic because a man who won the US Presidency by campaigning against the evil empire of the USSR, was able to moderate his views in the face of the facts and took the opportunity to make the world a safer place. Now, 31 years later, we have another populist politician walking away from that agreement for what appears to be legitimate reasons, but on past form could be just ego or ideology. Donald Trump has told so ...

Firstly, I really should acknowledge the hundreds of thousands of people, some of our readers included, who gave up their Saturday to march in support of a People's Vote. And, for the benefit of the BBC, it's not a "so-called People's Vote". One does wonder if those who lead the BBC have given up on the idea of reporting altogether in favour of simply empowering the commentariat, i.e. the sort of people who have never had any problem in having their voices heard anyway. But I digress. It was reassuring to see a mass demonstration of public support for a ...
