The Brampton Valley Way, which runs for 14 from Market Harborough to the edge of Northampton, follows the route of a railway line that closed in 1981. I was on the last train and have a few photos from that day that I will post on this blog sometime. Over the years the hedges have grown larger and the path narrower, which makes if feel less like and old railway. On Saturday I walked its first mile or two to reach a new cafe in a tent off the main road in Great Oxendon, passing the occasional dog-walker, enjoying the ...

The Leicester Mercury reported earlier this month that the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) will not now hold its public hearing into child sexual abuse allegations against the former Leicester MP Greville Janner until 2020. This, says the IICSA, is because new lines of inquiry have emerged in the Independent Police Complaints Commission's investigation of Leicestershire Police's response to the allegations against Janner. When the hearings do take place, the IICSA website reveals that they will investigate the allegations of Lord Janner and then, if it finds some or all of them to be well founded, consider: the ...

Emails with voting information for the London Region Executive elections have been hitting inboxes of party members across London today. These contests tend to be relatively low profile, but canny regional chairs and smart regional executives can make a huge impact on the party's success in their patch – and when done badly, these roles can be a huge deadweight on the rest of us. So if you are a fellow London member, do look out for the email and vote. One of the candidates for London Region chair is Ben Sims, author of a great piece on becoming a ...

Across the Atlantic, Trump and his cronies are doing their very best to rewrite the definition of transgender out of existence. An agenda of social cleansing that feeds into his administration's insular and antagonistic narrative. We may like to think that Trump's views are in isolation, that his fear of difference does not seep to our shores, but it does. The experience of many trans people is incredibly tough. A report from Thomas Reuters Foundation last week found that 20% of trans people still get pushed towards conversion therapy, even within our NHS; and another report from Stonewall showed that ...

Predictably, I saw yet more memes yesterday lauding the "real men" of the UK's wartime generations, and comparing them favourably to the "offended, mentally ill gender neutral vegan snowflakes" that men supposedly are today. I didn't make this post on remembrance day itself because yesterday was a time to reflect more than to argue, but [...]

Recently, a Party member campaigning to be elected as the local Liberal Democrat candidate contacted me to attend a coffee morning to meet him. Certainly, I said. I must check first though; I assume that the premises are wheelchair accessible? They were not, and the reaction of the candidate when I contacted him was little more than a shrug. This is unacceptable; not least because this candidate bases his entire persona and candidacy on LGBT rights. Frankly, I am completely fed up. Over and over again, I find people campaigning for justice for survivors of sexual assault, the LGBT community, ...

By far the most far-reaching consequence of the admission by rightwing pressure group the TaxPayers' Alliance that it illegally sacked the whistleblower, Shahmir Sanni for revealing unlawful overspending in the Brexit referendum campaign will be on the way that the so-called BBC deals with groups like this in the future. As Carole Cadwalladr writes in the Observer, the Taxpayers' Alliance has accepted all the allegations Sanni made during his action claiming unfair dismissal, wrongful dismissal, direct discrimination and "dismissal by reason of a philosophical belief in the sanctity of British democracy". She says that significantly, the Alliance has also conceded ...

I'm now in Hobart, having moved from Australia's largest state to its smallest. We only spent a six days in WA, and purely as a tourist. We didn't visit anybody living here.
