Davis' self appointment 'farcical' – Brake Responding to reports that David Davis has spent several days in Washington speaking to US Trade Officials about a free trade deal with the UK, Liberal Democrat Brexit spokesperson Tom Brake said: Having failed to negotiate properly with the EU, the idea that David Davis is now touting himself as Britain's self-appointed 'man in Washington' is farcical. The Prime Minister must confirm he has not been acting in any official capacity or with her blessing. David Davis and his Brexiter colleagues have got us into a huge mess, with Britain now facing a damaging ...

One story in Westminster, another in the council chamberLocal Lib Dems attacked local Welsh Labour councillors for letting down the children of Neath and Port Talbot. Cuts to the county's education budget stood in clear opposition to the efforts of Education Minister Kirsty Williams in raising the status of education in Wales and displayed rank hypocrisy. "Labour in Westminster deplores austerity in education. In an opposition-day debate last Tuesday on a motion calling for the government to 'end austerity, not with little extras, but by reversing all cuts to education funding', Labour MP after Labour MP stood up in the ...

I've done the new Liberator. I have done Radical Bulletin. Which means I can put this off no longer. It is time to spend another week at Bonkers Hall. Take it away your lordship... Monday To the Bonkers' Arms, where I join the regulars in setting the world to rights. We note that Vince Cable has announced he is open to the idea of changing the name of the Liberal Democrats: but what if he is looking at things, as our American cousins would have it, backasswards? What if it is Vince Cable's name that is the one that should ...

Works continues on straightening the railway through Market Harborough station. Part of the northbound platform has been boarded off. Soon the newly aligned platforms will start taking shape behind those boards. Meanwhile, you can now see the route that the realigned tracks will take through the old station car park and beyond. At present that alignment is home to an impressive horde of earth-moving plant. They are working on the railway bridge over Rockingham Road too. The road has been closed for a week now and trains will be diverted around Market Harborough and over the Welland Viaduct tomorrow.

Brexitometers were out in force across Scotland today as Lib Dem activists took to the streets to campaign for a People's Vote on the Brexit deal. The big thing that we have to do over the next wee while is assure people that Brexit can be stopped. Vince Cable has said that a People's Vote is now probable rather than just possible. Here's some of the highlights of the campaigning activity: Thanks to everyone who's already come to see @scotbordlibdem team in Kelso this morning for the @scotlibdems day of action! #scottishborders #scotlibdems #exitfrombrexit pic.twitter.com/xOB1LZLHsS — Jenny Marr (@tzenni) November ...

Hamlet (1948)

This is an unusual case where though I had never seen this particular adaptation before, I am pretty familiar with the source material. Hamlet, directed by and starring the recently knighted Sir Laurence Olivier, won the Oscar for Best Motion Picture of 1948, the first ever non-American film to do so; Olivier also won Best Actor, and the film picked up two more Oscars for Best Art Direction - Set Decoration, Black and White, and Best Costumes, Black and White. The film was made 384 years after the birth of the main script-writer, a record which is unlikely to be ...

Those of us who are members still recall how Liberal Democrats peers rallied behind the party's election guru and former Chief Executive, Chris Rennard over a number of allegations made against him. He was cleared of sexually harassing Liberal Democrat party workers despite an independent review finding "broadly credible" evidence he "violated" the personal space of women. A lot of the arguments deployed in Rennard's defence revolved around burden of proof, but the overall impression the case left with many of us was that, despite the findings of the independent review, the party's inadequate processes had failed the alleged victims. ...

In the Scotsman, Willie Rennie sets out the case for a People's Vote in the wake of a woefully inadequate Brexit Deal that satisfies nobody. Do we sit by as Rees-Mogg's band of Brexit followers try to force us out of Europe with no deal? No. This is the time to rally for a People's Vote. When Parliament is so divided it's time to return it to the people. Growing numbers of people support the move to a People's Vote. People are signing up every day. This deal satisfies no one, regardless of whether they voted leave or remain. Brexit ...

The BBC has the article on its website – see link below www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-46179270 As a cyclist, I find this article interesting and to the point. I've commented before along the similar lines by highlighting local cycle route inadequacies which I have encountered. Often segregated cycle routes do not have logical ends and are in effect bits and pieces between destinations. The route from Switch Island to Ormskirk along the busy A59 is an example. From Switch Island to the Maghull boundary there's a brand new cycle path but it stops well short of Liverpool Road South. Yes, I know that ...

From Monday 19 September, residents' permits for parking in the red and blue zones will double in cost from £50 to £100 a year. The council says this is to cover administration costs but it has provided no details of why it costs £100 to issue a permit. Other councils charge far less. Only one permit will be allowed for each household. Shropshire Council has yet to announce this change, despite my pressing for a statement. Maybe it didn't want residents to renew early. Households in the Red and Blue Zones will be eligible for one permit per premise, with ...
