Responding to an official report published today revealing one in eight children and young people aged between 5 and 19 surveyed in England in 2017 had a mental disorder, former Liberal Democrat Health Minister Norman Lamb said: "These troubling figures reveal the true extent of mental health problems among children. The Conservative Government has a stark choice: either invest in services and give our children the best possible chance in life, or be responsible for the neglect of an entire generation of young people. "Mental illness can blight the lives and futures of children without the right interventions, but today's ...

Responding to official statistics published this week showing that 2 million people experienced domestic abuse in 2017-18, Liberal Democrat Communities spokesperson Wera Hobhouse said: "Every case of domestic abuse is an abhorrent and unthinkable crime. The scale of these figures show the urgent need for the Domestic Abuse Bill, but the Tories' Brexit-induced paralysis is delaying vital legislation and failing victims. "Changing the law alone won't, however, be enough on its own. Liberal Democrats demand better. We are fighting for more funding for refuges and rape crisis centres, as well as a new national rape crisis helpline to support victims ...

It's become cliche that every Tory prime minister since Major at least has been brought down by Europe. Also, that it appears to be happening yet again. I think Brexit exposes something deeper than this in terms of the problems faced by the Conservative party, going all the way back to Thatcher's departure in 1990, and it's not so much about the UK's membership of the European Union as it is about what the Conservative party is and what it exists to do. First of all, the party is actually the Conservatives and Unionists. Problem is, some people within the ...

On Tuesday 13th November the Government's Ivory Bill had its third reading in the Lords and passed through to receive Royal Assent. This was a landmark piece of legislation to go some way towards protecting elephants, especially the African elephant, who are poached for their ivory. Currently approximately 20,000 elephants a year are still being slaughtered for their ivory. This unsustainable rate equates to one every 25 minutes. We have now reached the stage where more elephants are being killed by poachers, than live elephant calves are being born every year. The aim of the Bill was to take most ...

The old boy's refuses to see his village in Rutland left behind by events in London. Saturday Were you on that march for a 'people's vote' in London the other week? What fun it was! The only fly in the ointment was that the sheer numbers who turned out made progress desperately slow. I was therefore pleased that I had decided to come in a motorised bath chair painted in British racing green and equipped with a two-tone horn. That certainly scattered the laggards! So much did I enjoy the day that I staged my own march here this morning. ...

This is always a worrying matter but particularly so at this time of the year with plummeting temperatures. The Liverpool Echo has an informative article by Liam Thorpe on rough sleeping on its website which is well worth a read – see link below:- The Sefton Borough figures are interesting to note as I guess you will be as surprised as I am with them. Extract from Echo article – Sefton's figures show there are 9 rough sleepers in the borough and 40 homeless people in temporary shelter. I fully expected them to be higher, although the difficulty in ...

Happy Thanksgiving!

Plymouth Rock This is a revised version of last year's post... The North American holiday of Thanksgiving was born of tragedy. The Mayflower, filled with settlers from England, docked in Plymouth, Massachusetts in December 1620. Of the 102 passengers and around 30 crew on board, only five women of eighteen survived the winter, and around half the men and crew. The following spring, the Wampanoag, a native people, taught the incomers which crops were endemic to the New World, and how to fertilise their crops with fish. This act of good will let to a plentiful harvest, and gave the ...

The Guardian reports that the official pro-Brexit campaign group has lost a judicial review aimed at trying to get an Electoral Commission ruling that it breached spending limits thrown out. They say that Vote Leave was challenging the findings of a report issued in July that it had exceeded the prescribed £7m limit by channelling funds via another campaign group, but the high court concluded on Wednesday that its case was groundless. The judge also dismissed an attempt to claim that the commission did not have the power to investigate the alleged overspending: Vote Leave was fined £61,000 by the ...

There is a new report out by Shelter, 'Homelessness in Great Britain: the numbers behind the story', which shows that homelessness is increasing across the country, with one in 52 people in London now homeless. Large increases in homelessness have also affected areas such as the West Midlands and the north-west of the country. While it is difficult to know true numbers, the estimated total of those homeless across Great Britain is believed to be 320,000. Liberal Democrat Housing Spokesperson Wera Hobhouse says, It is an absolute disgrace that hundreds of thousands of vulnerable people have been left without a ...

I became an evangelical, charismatic Christian at the age of 13. Discussing anything about faith and religion with me must have been an absolute nightmare.
