The new issue of the London Review of Books carries a review of Neal Ascherson's book Tom Nairn: 'Painting Nationalism Red'? by Rory Scothorne. In the course of it (and behind the LRB paywall), Scothorne nicely dissects Labour's timidity over Brexit:None of Labour's warring factions dares to suggest that this moment of constitutional breakdown demands a constitutional revolution; instead the party is constrained by the bad logic of adjectival manoeuvre - hard, soft, chaotic, no deal, Tory, people's - around an all-consuming and unstoppable noun. When experience strips away these rhetorical qualifiers, Labour will be dangerously complicit in what remains.Neal ...

We now go over live to Remain HQ. Will Straw CBE: The next item on the agenda is to choose the narrator for our new video. Remember the focus groups everybody: Leave voters see us as elitist and condescending. So who's the right person to dispel that view and win them over? Freddie and Fiona [together]: Stephen Fry!I have real problems with this video. It seems more calculated to make Remainers feel good about themselves than win over people who voted Leave last time. And if you are going to try to puncture Boris Johnson and Jacob Rees-Mogg's absurd claim ...

All the King's Men won the Oscar for Best Motion Picture of 1949, and Broderick Crawford and Mercedes McCambridge won Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress. The other nominated films were Battleground, The Heiress, A Letter to Three Wives and Twelve O'Clock High, none of which I have heard of. On the two IMDB systems, it ranks 8th and 20th for the year. The Third Man, Kind Hearts and Coronets, White Heat, On The Town, and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon are all ranked ahead of it on both lists (none of them was nominated for Best Motion Picture; this ...

Protestations

I'm sat watching coverage of the riots currently taking place in Paris, and musing on the violent theatricality of the movement. My recently completed Masters Dissertation investigated, in part, protest and riot - therefore what is happening right now is relevant to my interests (especially since the city centre of Paris was designed, ostensibly, to discourage protest, and I argue that the usurpation of space is intrinsic to its existence)This is NOT my Dissertation verbatim - it is a splicing: reworking and rewording several sections into a smaller whole.*** Protest may appear to reclaim or usurp the intention of the ...

I'll be honest, I was distraught when George H W Bush won the 1988 presidential election. I had so been hoping for an end to Republicans in the White House after 8 years of Reagan. I didn't think his Vice President was going to be much of an improvement. I was annoyed that hard-hitting negative advertising combined with poor strategy and misjudgement of what constituted a good photo opportunity had cost Mike Dukakis. Four years later, I stayed up all night watching the results, elated as Bill Clinton won a commanding victory. By that time, it wasn't that I couldn't ...

After pressure from Liberal Democrat MP, Wera Hobhouse, the Crown Prosecution Service have confirmed they will be conducting a review to update their guidelines on 'sex for rent'. After speaking in the Westminster Hall Debate on the issue, Wera Hobhouse said: "It is great to see progress is being made on such an important issue. This crime is vile and illegal, and the Government must do everything it can to stop perpetrators taking advantage of vulnerable individuals affected by the housing crisis. "It is crucial we ensure police have the tools and guidance to tackle 'sex for rent'. I hope ...

Theresa May has refused to confirm when the immigration White Paper will be published. She was asked by Liberal Democrat MP Norman Lamb after Ministers originally promised to publish the White Paper last year, but that deadline has been repeatedly postponed. Responding to the Prime Minister's failure to answer his question, Norman Lamb said: "It is unacceptable that Theresa May is still refusing to answer this question. She has spent years talking of ending free movement, but today has once again refused to tell us when we will find out what this means. "The continual delays arising from cabinet splits ...

Responding to the announcement that the second Leveson Inquiry will not go ahead after victims lost a High Court fight against the Government, Liberal Democrat MP Christine Jardine said:"The Conservative Government has let down those families who had their privacy invaded and their lives turned upside down by some of the press who behaved appallingly."A commitment was made during the coalition that the Leveson Inquiry would be completed and that justice would be sought."It's not acceptable that this issue has been kicked into the long grass for so long, in an attempt to get us to forget it. For those who are not aware of the legend, was a Titan, culture hero, and trickster figure who is credited with the creation of man from clay, and who defies the gods by stealing fire and giving it to humanity. As a punishment, he is sentenced to eternal torment. The immortal Prometheus was bound to a rock, where each day an eagle, the emblem of Zeus, was sent to feed on his liver, which would then grow back overnight to be eaten again the next day. I am not sure at the moment whether to apply that analogy to Theresa ...

A train from Preston pulling into Ormskirk Station. Well, have a look at this chart which I gained from OPSTA (Ormskirk, Preston & Southport Travellers Assn). It shows performance on the Ormskirk – Preston Line:- Please click on the chart to enlarge it. This is shocking performance in anyone's book surely. People's jobs, livelihoods, medical appointments, schooling etc. etc. are all at risk by such appalling performance. And more to the point what on earth is the Dept. of Transport doing about this state of affairs? Oh and as an aside, my fellow blogger Phil Holden has just posted this ...

Days before the deadline, final plans for 213 homes between Bromfield Road and the A49 were submitted to Shropshire Council. The site will be accessed from a new roundabout on the A49 and a pedestrian footbridge over the railway line. All housing will be above the floodplain. A retail store will be built on Bromfield Road. The principle of housing development on this site is accepted. It is now a question of making it as good as possible. It must boost its affordable housing to meet Shropshire Council's requirement of 15% affordable housing in Ludlow. A suggestion from planning officers ...
