In the week that saw the centenary of women being eligible to stand for Parliament, Liberal Democrat party members in the Arundel and South Downs constituency gave their overwhelming backing to Alison Bennett when they met at a hustings event in West Chiltington. Alison Bennett, who has lived in the constituency since 2012, has been active in the local community since moving to Sussex. She has volunteered at the local children's football club, her local school and the West Sussex County Council's Children & Family Service. She campaigned passionately for Remain in Hassocks and Hurstpierpoint and was integral to recent ...

So much for the Conservative and Unionist Party, I guess... PM's immigration plans a disaster for economy and public services PM puts Gibraltar in jeopardy PM's immigration plans a disaster for economy and public services Responding to the announcement of the plans to issue low-skilled migrants with 11-month visas, Liberal Democrat Home Affairs Spokesperon, Ed Davey said: Theresa May's plans would be disastrous for our economy and public services. Not only would these restricted visas put off skilled workers from working in the UK, but they simply won't be able to fill gaps in sectors such as the NHS, social ...

I go away for a couple of days and what happens? Business Insider said yesterday: The Liberal Democrats have told party activists to prepare for a snap general election in the next few months in the belief that Theresa May could be forced to go back to the country when her Brexit deal is voted down by MPs. In an email sent to party members on Friday morning and leaked to Business Insider, Lib Dem authorities say they have produced a "Flying Start Kit" for members to ensure they are prepared for a potential general election campaign. "The Tory Government ...

First Man

Since this is eligible for next year's Hugos, I'm not going to say much about it for now. Meanwhile here is my review of the book it is based on, which I read in 2006. And here is Neil Gaiman's anecdote about impostor syndrome, which is relevant.

Spondon Home Guard

A conversation I had earlier on today reminded me that I have a photograph of the Spondon Home Guard. It was taken during World War II, outside the gatehouse lodge at Locko Park. I don't have a key to the people in the picture, although my assumption is that there must be at least one [...] The post Spondon Home Guard appeared first on ten pence piece.

Did the author Lewis Carroll ever visit Llandudno in Wales? It is a hard question to track down the answer to as this book sets out.

Sometimes, numbers on sites like YouTube and Twitter jump up and down; subscriber counts lag, like-counts bounce all over the place. Why is it so hard for computers to count?

So your inbox will no doubt have been overflowing with Black Friday deals that aren't that great these past few days. And this coming Monday is apparently when we all buy our pressies online. Good to see the Lib Dems get into that. An email from Jo Swinson dropped into my inbox this morning: 97 years ago, Margaret Wintringham took her seat in the House of Commons as the MP for Louth in Lincolnshire. She was the third woman ever to be elected as an MP, the second ever to take her seat, and the first British woman to become ...

Following the publication of the political declaration on the UK's future relationship with the EU, Liberal Democrat Home Affairs spokesperson Ed Davey has written to the Prime Minister, urging her to commit to retaining the European Convention on Human Rights in UK law. In the letter, Davey raises concerns over new language in paragraph 7 of the political declaration, which states that "The future relationship should incorporate the United Kingdom's continued commitment to respect the framework of the European Convention on Human Rights". He argues that this is not sufficient, and asks the Prime Minister to clarify whether this could ...

The BBC reports that the UKIP leader in the Welsh Assembly, Gareth Bennett, who spent almost £10,000 of public money on a damp office that was never used, has agreed to have his salary cut to repay some of the cash. They say that the Assembly Member signed the lease against advice, but has now apologised and had £2,477 taken from his pay. A committee of the Assembly found Mr Bennett breached the code of conduct by improperly using Assembly resources, and had consequently brought the assembly into disrepute.: AMs on the assembly's standards committee have recommended the UKIP group ...

London gears up for 2020

London may be the smallest English region geographically, but in LibDem terms it is top of the league, with around 20,000 members, many of whom joined following the 2016 EU Referendum and subsequent general election. Small wonder, then, that Brexit will figure large at the London LibDems' regional conference tomorrow [Saturday]. Tom Brake, MP for Carshalton & Wallington and the Party's national Brexit spokesperson, will be leading a session on the impact of Brexit on the city, chaired by former MEP Baroness Ludford. And in one of a number of fringe meetings, sponsored by the Alliance of European Liberals and ...
