Spent today feeling really crappy after some dodgy food yesterday luchtime (I think it was lunch, anyway) kept me up most of the night expelling said dodgy food from various orifices. Which kind of took the edge off of having spent the day in good company yesterday and then seen a play in the evening which... Yeah, I couldn't say I enjoyed it, exactly, because it wasn't the kind of play you enjoy, but it was thought-provoking and emotional and the ending was devastating. All My Sons by Arthur Miller, for those more cultured than me - all I knew ...

I was in South Wigston today when I came across this bus shelter. Why had it been made to look like a railway relic? And why were there more railway connections when I had a look at it? The answer is that it stands on the site of the old Wigston South station. This is not to be confused with the present-day South Wigston station on the Leicester to Birmingham line. Wigston South was on the old Midland Counties line from Leicester to Rugby, which formed part of George Hudson's original route from London to York. That station closed, along ...

Rupert Matthews MEP, a former lecturer on the paranormal with the "International Metaphysical University" was today chosen as the Conservative candidate for 2020's police and crime commissioner election in Leicestershire and Rutland. According to Michael Crick, who has taken an interest in Matthews' eccentricities, the course he introduces above would have set you back $425 in 2012. Back in the days of Conservative modernisation, the party was not amused by the cover of a book published by Bretwalda Books - Matthews describes himself as its 'editorial director'. Defending himself to the BBC in 2011, he said: "I'm a shareholder in ...

It has been possible to welcome The Independent Group's eruption onto the British political stage without thinking of throwing in the towel and leaving the ring to them. They seem to have helped stir up both the Government and the Shadow ministers to move from the entrenched positions which had been vainly criticised by so many. If so they have done some service to the country, even though their voting power in the Commons is as limited as is our own party's. Nonetheless, seeing the immediate popularity of this novel group while our own national poll ratings fell below 10% ...

When 52% of the country voted to leave the EU they did so with pledges of economic nirvana and public spending boosts ringing in their ears. Alas, two and a half years later, all of that promise has evaporated. There will be no extra money for the health service. In fact we are having to pay £39 billion to meet our financial obligations as we close the door behind us. And as for those advantageous trade deals, they are as illusory as Scotch mist. Our Brexiteer Trade Secretary has clocked up thousands of air miles in that time with precious ...

I understand that Merseytravel has told the Champion newspaper that it isn't the case that they are reducing the service based on the publicly available tender document/service specification that is doing the rounds on this and at least one other website where a Maghull resident first spotted it. They say that the cut-back timetable [in the service specification that I hold] was one of the options considered when the tender was put out, but it wasn't the one taken up and that there will actually be no change to the present timetable. They have however confirmed that a new operator ...

Jo Swinson has slammed Home Secretary over his inflexible 3 year student visas for EU nationals in the event of a no-deal Brexit. For a start, Scottish degree courses last four years. From The Herald: The Russell Group of elite universities, which includes Glasgow and Edinburgh, urged UK ministers to scrap the European Temporary Leave to Remain (ELTR) visa. The Home Office has proposed that if there is a no-deal Brexit, EU citizens would only be able to stay in the UK for three months before being required to obtain an ELTR. This would let them to live, work and ...

Shropshire Council refused a public question on climate change at Thursday's meeting. Why? The questioner had made a minor mistake. He had asked for the answer "before" not "at" the meeting in his email, though not in the question itself. The question was ruled out of order minutes before the meeting, even though the question had been submitted two weeks before. That stinks of political interference in the democratic rights of electors in Shropshire. When Councillor Julian Dean, the only Green Party member, raised the matter as a point of order, the Speaker ruled the point of order out of ...
