"After a year of navel-gazing about 'Registered Supporters' now our Leadership doesn't even seem to have the energy to ask potential supporters to register with this party in particular." Alex Wilcock demands better of the Liberal Democrats. Jane Dodds explains why the Welsh Lib Dems want to trial Universal Basic Income. "It's hard to find a hero in this story. It seems to me to illustrate in a small way the huge challenge at the heart of modern politics: how to fix complex problems in an accountable way with an increasingly broken system." Ed Maxfield on the closure of Norfolk's ...

The Liberal Democrats in Northampton North have chosen Martin Sawyer as their prospective parliamentary candidate. Back in 2010 the Lib Dems were less than 2500 votes behind the winning Tory in a three-way marginal. In 2017 we gor only 2.5 per cent of the vote. I like Sawyer's plan for the site of the town's old Greyfriars bus station, which has been lying unused since demolition in 2015. "My vision for Greyfriars is an urban park with canopies for buses if needed. I've seen something similar in Budapest. The green space would help the town with its air quality problems."And ...

A Leicester Mercury story begins: The electrification on the Midland Mainline will be extended into Leicestershire, the Government has confirmed. Transport ministers have said Network Rail has been instructed to draw up plans upgrade the rail route as far as Market Harborough.Searching this blog, I find that I reported this news in June of last year. My source was a comment to the Nottingham Post by Sir Peter Soulsby, the mayor of Leicester, after the publication of the invitation to tender to provide the service on this line. So the campaign by Harborough's MP Neil O'Brien to have the wires ...

So, we know how to run, we've taken a look at the history of the post and, last week, I offered some thoughts as to the skills required. Today, I'd like to dust off the old crystal ball, and look at what might be the possible challenges when candidate X takes over the reins on 1 January. Party Presidents tend to be most successful when they are either bake to work closely with the Leader, or when the Leader simply allows them to get on with their work without interference. Admittedly, the job of Party management is one that tends ...

I was fascinated last month while writing about the great Distributist G. K. Chesterton, to find his description of why he stopped being a socialist. Because, although he wrote it more a than a cemtury ago, it is again the main reason why I can't be a socialist, despite the fact that I have always considered myself on the left, somewhere or other. Chesterton's stumbling block was the "tone of bitterness [and] atmosphere of hopelessness" encouraged among socialists. And, a century on, take a long hard look at those on the socialist left that you know, and it feels remarkably ...

For the past half year (if not longer), Prime Minister Theresa May has, everytime she appeared at the Despatch Box to talk about Brexit (often postponing votes and talking platitudes), told the broad mass of MP's anxious about getting a No Deal Brexit cliff-jump: "The best way of avoiding a No Deal situation is voting for the deal I'm putting on the table; there is no alternative". For the past weeks, she's been forced by her own party to see if, in the case of the Backstop (which became necessary because of May's own "red lines"), there could be a ...

The Daily Telegraph has the article on its website – see link below:- Extract from the article – 'Vulnerable pensioners with dementia and Parkinson's are facing crippling care bills following attempts by health officials to restrict the numbers receiving NHS funding. Under national rules, any patient with a significant health problem should have their care and nursing fees paid in full – if the condition is deemed to be the main reason they need such help. But an investigation by The Telegraph reveals that authorities are increasingly refusing to fund care, claiming that devastating diseases are not severe, or ...

Today's front page headline by the Guardian must be one of the most unexpected of all time. Faced with a leader who describes Islam as "a death cult" and who has appointed the anti-Muslim activist Tommy Robinson as an adviser moderate members of UKIP have abandoned the party to replaced by right wingers who are more sympathetic to this world-outlook. The paper's sources say that many of the 8,000 or so newcomers who have joined in recent months appear to be younger and more radical, attracted both by Robinson and the party's links to controversial YouTube agitators. Members of UKIP's ...
