I am tired and my internet connection is slooow, so let's go for an easy win. Hensall is the least used station in North Yorkshire, but has some remarkably fine buildings for a least used station. The video contains pacers and Portillos.

There are a couple of things particularly worth celebrating about the European elections if you live in these parts. You can find all the relevant results on the Leicester Mercury site. The first is that the Liberal Democrats outpolled both the Conservatives and Labour across the East Midlands, with the result that we again have an MEP for the region. And it is again Bill Newton Dunn. The second is that the picture was just the same in the Harborough constituency. The Brexit Party was again well ahead, but the Lib Dems came above Labour and the Tories. Of most ...

I'll be running through tips for both new and experienced canvassers alike, helping people get up and running with MiniVAN and then hitting the doorsteps for some practice in the Cannon Hill by-election.

Since 1974, World Environment Day has been held annually on 5th June. The day has been a flagship event to promote awareness of environmental issues and threats from marine pollution to human overpopulation. The day has grown to become a global platform for public outreach, with participation from over 143 countries annually. Each year, 1 country is chosen as the official host. This year, the theme for the day is 'Beat Air Pollution' and it has been announced that China will host the global celebrations. The scope of the problem caused by air pollution cannot be underestimated. Annually, around 7 ...

As with any election campaign, successful or otherwise, it is important to step back once the dust has settled and consider what can be learned and what can be improved upon. The recent European Parliament elections are no different in that regard. In particular, the dynamic between the different parties campaigning for a People's Vote, which became increasingly fractious as the campaign went on, is worth reflecting on, particularly as further cooperation with these parties is likely to be at the heart of the upcoming leadership election. At the campaign's outset, Vince Cable was no doubt right to seek to ...

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have selected local campaigner Chris Twells as the party's lead candidate for the North Wales region at the next National Assembly for Wales election. North Wales elected a Welsh Liberal Democrat AM at every election until 2016, when UKIP won two seats. Chris was selected by Welsh Liberal Democrat members living in Ynys Mon, Arfon, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham in an all-member ballot. Chris was born in St Asaph and brought up in Rhosesmor, Flintshire, attending the Alun School in Mold before going on to study Law at the University of York. He has been ...

I've been having a think about BBC's 'Question Time' political debate program, and some of the problems it has had with panel selection over recent years in particular. The first thing to say is that this is not going to include an in-depth assessment of how many seats have been allocated to parties and individuals - others have done such work, but that isn't my focus here. This is about fixing the problem, rather than assessing exactly how the problem has come about and quantifying exactly what its effects have been. On that point, though, I think it is sufficient ...

Wow! What a few days it has been. I wanted to write you a little message from Brussels about the incredible European election last Thursday and how we can build on from our stellar result. First of all can I just say a huge, huge thank you to all of you. In just three weeks, our activists put in a marathon effort to deliver millions of leaflets, bang in 'Stop Brexit' and 'Bollocks to Brexit' stakeboards and knock on thousands of doors (and this was on the back of an enormous effort to get all those wonderful councillors elected!). Now ...

One of the next big questions the Lib Dems need to answer is what to do about Change UK. After a disastrous result in the European elections, the fledging group are facing an existential crisis. A new party needs early success to fuel its momentum. They got the opposite - 3% of the vote. Given this, it should come as no surprise that Change want to be friends again, with the interim leader Heidi Allen openly stating that she'd like to see Change and the Lib Dems run as one entity from now on. I understand that for some, the ...

The celebrated children's author and illustrator Judith Kerr died last week The day after her death was announced I caught a snatch of an interview she had given on "Woman's Hour." Judith Kerr, with her parents and brother, as Jews in fear of persecution, fled from Nazi Germany in the 1930s and eventually settled in London. Two points in the interview stood out. First, she lived in London throughout the Blitz but, although her countrymen were dropping devastation on her neighbours, neither she nor her family suffered any abuse, verbal or otherwise. Maybe she's looking back through rose-coloured spectacles, but ...

Welcome Back

After a break of a few years my website is back. I closed this down in 2017 at which point I had decided to step down from political life, but thankfully I then changed my mind. I will hopefully be updating this site now regularly.

This year's Gladstone Lecture is entitled "Poets, Prophets and Protestors: Liberty, Christianity and the Future." People in the Westminster bubble are either getting excited about Rory Stewart's bid for the leadership of the Conservative party, acting all sniffy about it (thus validating it in many respects), sometimes even suggesting Stewart must have ulterior motives for running; others are doing the classic Westminster thing and acting like they are too cool to be interested in it all. Anyhow, all of this indicates that Rory Stewart's campaign is a thing. I've met Rory on a handful of occasions; at dinners we were both at, sharing a panel with him, group meetings where I was one of the ...

What a great night it was for those who want us to remain in the EU, working for a better Britain, a better Europe and a better world. The result presents a challenging opportunity for us. Are we up to it? It will be a challenge to convert the Stop Brexit voters into our true supporters and activists. It's a challenge to outdo the Conservatives in taking on the Brexit party's claim to represent the nation, constantly reminding people that the total vote share for remain (40.4%) was greater than Leave (around 34.9%). We need to repeatedly remind people that ...

Abraham Lincoln defined democracy as "government of the people, by the people, for the people." As the European Union (EU) brings together different peoples, European democracy – as it was created in September 1976 via the Brussels treaty that established the election of the European Parliament by universal suffrage – should logically be understood as [...] The post The two challenges before the EU: environment and migration appeared first on Radix.

The Independent reports that the UK's equality watchdog has launched a formal investigation into whether Labour has "unlawfully discriminated against, harassed or victimised people" from the Jewish community. The paper says that the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) was moved to act after receiving a number of complaints about handling of allegations of antisemitism in Labour ranks, a row which has dogged the party for many months: Labour said it would cooperate fully with the investigation and it rejected any suggestion that it did not handle complaints "fairly and robustly, or that the party has acted unlawfully". However, the ...
