But there's always a point where you have to come home... Davey: MI5 revelations "a shocking breach of civil liberties" Responding to today's High Court hearing over MI5's collection and storage of bulk data, Liberal Democrat Home Affairs spokesperson Ed Davey said: These revelations represent a shocking breach of civil liberties by one of the agencies tasked with safeguarding them. The Liberal Democrats have consistently opposed giving MI5 powers to collect bulk communications ...

The biggest issue facing the council, the country and the world at the moment is climate change. It is bigger than Brexit and its consequences will be felt for even longer, but it doesn't get one hundredth of the publicity that Brexit gets. The Liberal Democrats are aware that we are facing a climate emergency, and here in Broxtowe I want us to be pro-active in tackling it. I have asked the planning officers at the borough council to draw up new planning policies to deal with the following: Ensure all new houses are carbon neutral in their day to ...

This post first appeared on the Radix blog... You can't help noticing, looking back at the past century or so of UK political history, that a split in the Conservative Party can be extremely damaging to those who are entirely innocent of it. Like now. Or like the period before the First World War, when the Conservatives were outrageously encouraging mutinies in Ulster against Liberal government plans for Irish home rule. It is worth remembering who originally stoked the fires of the troubles that so beset Northern Ireland from 1969 onwards. But there is a period of our recent history ...

Jo's Day - 11 June 2019

In an interview with Businesss Insider, Jo says that she can reach out to new voters: She said that one of her key qualities was that she's "not a tribal politician" and had an advantage over Davey in being in a stronger position to win voters from the Conservatives, Labour and elsewhere. I was down at the Donald Trump protest last week and several people came up to me and said they had joined the Lib Dems as a result of seeing me on Question Time," she told Business Insider. "It is working." She added: "In this election, it is ...

Ed's Day - 11 June 2019

Today, Ed has expressed his concern over MI5's inappropriate handling of data: These revelations represent a shocking breach of civil liberties by one of the agencies tasked with safeguarding them. The Liberal Democrats have consistently opposed giving MI5 powers to collect bulk communications data, and the serious issues raised by the Investigatory Powers Commissioner show that we were right to do so. "Parliament needs to look again at the surveillance powers we give MI5 and other agencies, and roll back laws that unnecessarily erode privacy and liberty. In an interview with i, he suggested that Conservative and Labour MPs were ...

Get them while they are hot: https://awkwardsquad.teemill.com/collection/new/ I am trying to decide what to do about the leadership election t-shirts once the leadership election is over. My heart says retire them both, along with Vince Hat, given that Vince will no longer be leader. [IMG: [personal profile] ] matgb thinks I should leave the winner's one up, because people will still want it. What do you lot think? View Poll: Retiring T-shirts In sales terms, if you are interested, we have sold a LOT more Team Jo than Team Ed. Perhaps Ed supporters are just not t-shirt people? [IMG: comment ...

Two announcements made yesterday affect pensioners at both ends of the monied spectrum. As part of his pitch for the Tory leadership (and hence the premiership) Boris Johnson announced that, if he wins, he will raise the threshold for liability to the higher, 40%, income tax rate from £50 000 to £80 000 a year. The cost will be partly offset by making recipients of these high salaries pay more National Insurance Contritions (NICs) for which at present the rate drops from 12% to 2% for incomes above £50 000. However, pensioners don't pay NICs, even if we are working ...

There is currently much noise around the (unsurprising) news that a senior politician, who was once a journalist, spending much time in a large city in the UK, has taken drugs during his life - we're taking illicit drugs here, cocaine, in Mr Gove's case. Despite some moral outrage, there has been a surprising shift in the criticism. Much of the condemnation has been around the hypocrisy of a cabinet minister. A minister who is wedded to a policy which criminalises users of drugs, as opposed to the actual taking. I'm going to concentrate here on the argument to legalise ...

The actions of a Tiger

Then imitate the actions of a tiger, stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood, disguise fair nature with hard favoured rage! Shakespeare's Henry V, could have been referring to politics, now! The tiger is not timid, but is brave. The rage is not destructive but is strong. There is a need to be brave and strong. The centre ground is regarded by some, wrongly, as merely mushy, wishy washy. That old adage, the only thing that happens in the middle of the road, is, you get knocked down, is nonsensical. I welcome those who do want to journey with me. ...

If suburban Maghull, a dormitory town of Liverpool, is famous for anything it's the fact that world famous toy maker Frank Hornby made it his home and there's a small Hornby Heritage Center within the Town's Meadows Leisure Center for folks to visit. It's open whenever Maghull Library is open, so check the current times on the web and come and visit. The Frank Hornby Trust, who set up the Heritage Center, have been fortunate to either purchase, have donated or be loaned many items in its display (Meccano, Hornby Trains, Dinky Toys etc.) but one area of our collection ...

We want to hang on to the Remain voters who flocked to us in the Euro elections. We believe that our party could radically change our conflicted country for the better, while we see that the two main parties at present are, in the expressive vernacular, of as much use as a fart in a bottle. This husk of a government continues to do harm. As if it were not enough that Chancellor Philip Hammond ignored the poorest in his March Spring Statement despite bumper tax receipts, the continuing impact of the roll-out of Universal Credit, the two-child limit on ...

As the Tory leadership campaign gets underway, some of the candidates have taken a hard line on how we will leave the EU, even going so far as to propose us not paying the £39 billion divorce bill, previously agreed in negotiations. On first glance this is a compelling line for hardliners, but the consequences of us with-holding this money are severe and any candidate suggesting that it the UK can default on the payment cannot be a serious candidate for Prime Minister. The Independent has looked at what those consequences would be. They say that the £39bn is mostly ...
