The City of Portsmouth hosted world leaders for today's D-Day commemoration. Its Lib Dem Council Leader, Gerald Vernon-Jackson, captured the solemnity of the occasion. .@geraldvjuk on #DDay75 at #SouthseaCommon. Today is World Environment Day and Jo welcomed the Waitrose plan to reduce packaging, something she has long campaigned for. I've been advocating for reducing plastic packaging in our supermarkets for over a decade. This is an exciting move by @waitrose, showing business can be part of the solution for our biggest challenges.#WorldEnvironmentDay https://t.co/bvggi3ky1F — Jo Swinson (@joswinson) June 5, 2019

So, this is my story about the late great Albert Rohan, whose passing was announced today. He was 83. I got to know him in the 1999-2009 period, from when I first arrived in Brussels as a thinktanker on Balkan issues up to his time as Marti Ahtisaari's deputy in the Kosovo final status process. We saw each other often at conferences and I enjoyed learning from his vast experience. (Which included serving as Kurt Waldheim's chief of staff at the United Nations.) We both attended our friend Mabel Wisse Smit's wedding to (the tragically short-lived) Prince Friso of the ...

Aside from some nastiness I've seen from a few rogue supporters1 this has been a remarkably civil campaign so far. I'd like to see that continue. It's good when we can all bear in mind that what all of us want is what is best for the party. One of the things I think has contributed to that - and which I've really liked - is the way the MPs have done the MP portions of the nomination process. Gender balance for both candidates, and a London MP nominating Jo and a Scottish MP nominating Ed is a really nice ...

To get this out of the way: I in no way wish to mock the way things have turned out for Change UK. When they all left their respective parties, I had great hopes that they would become a major force in British politics. I still applaud their courage, if not their political and strategic nous. Yesterday, half of the group split off from the original eleven. Weirdly, they didn't immediately join the Lib Dems, but instead announced that they would be some independent grouping again – The Independent Group, perhaps? This is just silly – they should have just ...

This year is the 75th anniversary of the D Day landings and we are seeing a lot of media coverage of this important historical event. When I think of D Day I think of my Grandfather Denis Warwick who was 25 years old at the outbreak of WW2 and underwent surgery in order to be fit for military service. He was a private in the 6th Airborne Division of the Parachute Regiment, took part in the D Day landings, went on to fight in what became known as the Battle of the Bulge and ended his war in Germany. Returning ...

Meeting Trump

I had planned to be in London yesterday for a meeting of Lib Dem group leaders. Alas, the meeting was postponed until later this year. Frankly, I didn't want to be in London at the same time as the Trump visit and the demonstrations taking place against him. The postponement also allowed me to go to the Sunniside History Society meeting last night. As chairman, I had already arm twisted someone

If you had still had any illusions that our NHS would survive Brexit, these will have been dispelled by the statement of Trump's ambassador that, "The US will want business access to the NHS in any trade deal". Indeed, some have speculated that access to the NHS, along with the rest of the economy, is the real reason behind Trump's visit. This should come as no surprise, for the "Stronger In" campaign always warned that the country could have Brexit or the NHS, but not both. The NHS has long been admired by many Americans for its efficiency compared to ...

Like the Prose Update

As I mentioned in this entry I'm doing the Like The Prose writing challenge. I know I said I'd post all the stuff I'm submitting here, but it's difficult to do that without also posting the prompts and they don't want the prompts published, so... I have put a couple of them up F-locked (those of you of a lib dem bent might find this one amusing, but I'm not going to be posting them all. You'll probably see a few F-locked more if I particularly like what I've done that day, though. I am finding that the daily prompt ...

On Sunday, on an official trip to Switzerland, the US Secretary of State said that the United States was ready to talk to Iran "without preconditions". This is an important statement, capable of initiating a pathway to peace between the two most militarily powerful nations in the Persian Gulf. Air pollution is a big deal in Braunton, North Devon, where a traffic bottleneck (the only way to get to one of the country's most beautiful beaches) causes terrible air quality problems. So I was pleased to see that today we are tabling legislation to tackle one aspect of air pollution. Today is World Environment Day, a UN sponsored day where communities around the world are encouraged to #BeatAirPollution. The campaign is drawing attention to all types of air pollution, including household and industrial forms of pollution, air pollution as a result of agriculture practices and waste disposal, and transport ...

What next for the M4?

Like many in my party, I have long been on record as being opposed to the Newport by-pass, otherwise known as the M4 relief road. It would have been an environmental disaster, a homage to gas guzzling, polluting cars, that would itself, have become congested within years, and which would have compromised five SSSIs. My other objection was the Cardiff-centric nature of the scheme. The level of congestion and number of business-sapping accidents are as bad on the stretch of the M4 between junctions 37 and 45 as those around Newport, but there is no sign of a multi-billion pound ...
