I'm proud of Vince for not going to the State Banquet in honour of Donald Trump tonight. I am horrified that the biggest welcome our country has is being given to this racist misogynist who has the absolute nerve to slag off London's mayor as he comes in to land. Trump is an utterly graceless individual. Vince Cable set out why he opposes Trump's visit in an interview with BBC News. We should not be rolling out the red carpet for Donald Trump or involving the royals. Trump is doing great damage to British interests and our traditional alliance with ...

Ed's Day - 3 June 2019

After a frenetic weekend, it's been a quieter day for our two leadership candidates. Like Jo, Ed had something to say about our unwelcome house guest. .@realDonaldTrump's personal insults to the Mayor of London demonstrate his contempt for us. I'll proudly protest tomorrow alongside thousands of others who reject Trump's politics of hate & division and want to keep his hands off our #NHS. #trumpukvisit https://t.co/swynHYLQRT — Ed Davey [IMG: 🔶] (@EdwardJDavey) June 3, 2019 Check out Ed's website for updates. For both our leadership candidates, today has been relatively quiet after a frenetic weekend. But there was a common theme in their tweets: In one tweet, Donald Trump shows why he doesn't deserve a state visit. Offensive, abusive and undiplomatic. Remind me why we're rolling out the red carpet for him? https://t.co/eB8oXA7Wvm — Jo Swinson (@joswinson) June 3, 2019 Check out her Join Jo website for updates. A blue plaque was put up today at Coate Farm, Swindon, the birthplace of the Victorian writer Richard Jefferies. Coate Farm is now a museum dedicated to Jefferies. Its director Mike Pringle told the Swindon Advertiser: "This is fantastic, it's an acknowledgement that someone great was here. Richard Jefferies was a big name in his day but it seemed like his time had come and gone for a while. "However, it feels like society is coming round to him again with climate change on the agenda and ideas about re-wilding and being out in nature becoming more popular - these ...

The beauty of Bath shone on a scorching June day. Walking up the hill to the King Edward School, the city rolled down as a majestic backdrop. Liberal Democrat Home Affairs spokesperson Ed Davey has criticised Boris Johnson for citing an inaccurate statistic about crime in London when he was Mayor and promoting Stop and Search in his campaign launch video, released today. In the video, Johnson claims "we got crime down by 20%" in London when he was Mayor. The actual figure is 15%*. In addition, he argues for more Stop and Search, despite a 2016 Home Office analysis of his expansion of Stop and Search in London that found "no statistically significant crime-reducing effect from the large increase in weapons searches". Responding to the video, ...

Second paragraph of third chapter (re the Companion Chronicles): The opening story of the fourth season was a sequel to Simon Guerrier's hugely popular Home Truths, which marked the return of Sara Kingdom. The Drowned World carried on the story of Sara's 'ghost' in the house, talking with Robert. Simon said, "David didn't really ask for anything except a second story for Sara. I sent him a number of dieas - both for the stories she recounted and the framing device around them. And we was really keen to find out more about Robert. So I worked up an outline ...

Big, radical messaging works and when we do it, we win. That's the message we should all be taking away from our stunning successes in recent weeks, where saying "bollocks to Brexit" and focusing on the result we want rather than on process and detail has won us MEPs in numbers we could never have dreamed of in January, including an amazing two wins in my own North West seat. This didn't happen by accident though. Many of us within the party have been campaigning for the clearest possible anti-Brexit line since 2016, and helped get policy and message in ...

Fly-tipping is increasing everywhere. In our county it will not be helped by the closure of recycling bring banks. We have several incidents in Ludlow in recent weeks. By far the worst is also by far the most shocking. A pile of stinking rubbish and packaging has been dumped in the Castle Street car park. Food waste. Plastic bottles. Cartons. But also packaging for items sent through the Royal Mail and courier services. These identify the culprits and I have asked Shropshire Council to consider a prosecution. The real shock is that some of this material is addressed to people ...

Like many Lib Dems I have been more than a little disappointed with Change UK. Their launch was poorly executed; their decision to fight the EU elections ill thought out; their battle bus so badly designed that even I could have done better. Perhaps most wounding of all was their leaked memo which showed that their number one priority was to get rid of us by pinching our members; PPCs; councillors; donors and votes. That was so naïve. It was never likely to happen and certainly will never happen give our surge in members; MEPs and votes. The response from ...

The little known story of the Chagos Islanders is one of the worst crimes in recent British history. The Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean, were first settled by the French in the eighteenth century, originally with slave labour to work on coconut plantations. They were governed by France from Mauritius. Mauritius became a British colony at the end of the Napoleonic wars, along with its distant Chagos Islands dependency a thousand miles further east. By the 1960s, when Mauritius was approaching independence, there were about 2000 Chagos Islanders, mostly living on the largest island, Diego Garcia. They were deeply ...

When Theresa May's Meaningful Vote was defeated by a record 230 votes in January of this year, one of the more striking images was both Brexiter and Remainer crowds cheering the same result. While it's true to some extent that one of these groups will end up being wrong about that vote being good for their cause – we either leave or do not leave the European Union – in another sense, both sides cheering for the same thing isn't as bizarre as it first appears. One thing that has been odd over the last year or so has been ...

So the format I am referring to is in two stages. At the top of the ballot paper there is question 1 – do you want to remain in or leave the EU? Once the voter gives their preference for that question, then they move on to question 2, which would ask: if, Parliament decides following this referendum to leave the EU, do you want the UK to leave a) with the agreement with the EU put forward by Parliament in draft bill XXXX or b) without agreement with the EU as detailed in Parliament's draft bill YYYY ? There ...

There will be those of our readers who have made a decision in favour of #EdForLeader or #JoinJo, but for many, especially the newer ones, they may still be deciding. Just what awaits the UK on the other side of Brexit was made clear by the US Ambassador in interview yesterday, when he underlined just how weak our negotiating position will be in future trade deals once we cease to be a member of the World's biggest free trade area. As the Guardian reports, Woody Johnson suggested the UK would need to allow US agricultural products, including chlorinated chicken, on to the UK market as part of any post-Brexit trade deal, as well as US private sector involvement in the NHS: The US ambassador, who is a close friend of ...

The other day I had the opportunity to purchase a booklet (originally priced at 2/6d. but I paid a fair bit more than that) celebrating transport in Southport County Borough in the 100 years from 1867 to 1967. Obviously I could not let the opportunity pass me by so I bought it. This is the cover:- Inside it states – 'Brochure issued by Southport Corporation Transport Department to commemorate the Borough's Centenary Celebrations, 1967' and back then the Borough Transport Committee had 2 Aldermen and 13 Councillors on it. If my understanding is correct there's presently one Southport Councillor (John ...

There is no longer any doubt that the parking regime introduced last November is damaging Ludlow's independent traders. Ludlow Mayor Tim Gill told BBC Radio Shropshire last week that trade was down 13% before Christmas and 16% after Christmas. This was despite the mild winter. Roger Curry, owner of Bodenhams, told the station the new charges mean that people are always in a rush and don't linger long enough to spend money (begins at 1:47). These comments come ahead of a review of the parking regime imposed on our town by Shropshire Council last November. That regime increased on-street parking ...
