Shropshire Council has teamed up with the West Mercia police commissioner to launch a road safety initiative. A free driver awareness course is on offer. A drop-in session will be held at Ludlow Mascall Centre on Monday 8 July, 5pm to 7pm. Details of the Road Focus sessions. Anything that might improve road safety is important. But the record of the council and commissioner on road safety initiatives is poor. Neither supports a 20mph limit on all residential streets in the county. Safety schemes outside schools have been delayed indefinitely. If we slow traffic in an already slow county, we ...

Hello! I'm Mark Pack, author of 101 Ways To Win An Election, and the maintainer of the largest database of national voting intention polls in the UK, stretching back to 1943. Welcome to a round-up of the latest voting intention figures from each of the polling firms who are currently active in Britain. We now have the first post-European elections polls and they are just a bit dramatic, with one putting the Lib Dems first and another putting the Brexit Party first and giving the Conservative Party its worst ever rating since polling began in 1943. The third? It puts ...

There have been no trains from Market Harborough this week as the work of realigning the tracks through the station is finished. Trains from St Pancras to the North have taken the scenic route over the Welland Viaduct. Those that have still called at Leicester have astounded passengers by approaching the city from the north. I have got to work and back with the help of a replacement coach service. Things have run remarkably smoothly - there was a service every 15 minutes - and the free coffee and pastries certainly helped. So impressed was I that I voluntarily used ...

Due to a change in personal circumstances, Lucy Salek has had to withdraw from the list of Liberal Democrat candidates for the London-wide GLA top-up list in the 2020 elections. The votes cast in the original selection have therefore been recounted and the new ordered list of Lib Dem candidates is: Caroline Pidgeon (existing Assembly member) Hina Bokhari Rob Blackie Chris Maines Joyce Onstad Irina von Wiese Ben Mathis Hussain Khan Michael Bukola Adrian Hyyrylainen-Trett Adetokunbo Fatukasi You may notice that one of the people on the list is now an MEP so if the Lib Dems are successful in ...

Four years

It's four years today since we lost Charles Kennedy who died at the heartbreakingly young age of 55. We miss his wit and wisdom so much. It says so much about him that during the horrible atmosphere of the 2014 independence referendum in Scotland, he was respected by both sides. We can only wonder what impact he would have made on the EU referendum. He had the courage to do what was right – leading the opposition to the Iraq war in 2003, even when he was vilified in the Commons for doing so. Just as the polls closed on ...

So, the Lib Dems are surging. I have to say I have seen Liberal and then Lib Dem surges before! Normally we have surged and then retreated a little then surged and retreated a little. That was the pattern until ... Continue reading →

This review contains SPOILERS for both the film and the novel. The film has been out for 62 years, but if you haven't seen it, do go and see it first before reading this. The Bridge on the River Kwai won the Oscar for Best Motion Picture of 1957, and picked up another five, Best Director (David Lean), Best Actor (Alec Guinness), Best Adapted Screenplay (Pierre Boulle, with Michael Wilson and Carl Foreman, who actually wrote the screenplay, being awarded posthumous Oscars for it in 1984), Best Music, Scoring (Malcolm Arnold), Best Film Editing (Peter Taylor) and Best Cinematography (Jack ...

Welcome to the 11,000 who have joined the Liberal Democrats in the last few weeks, and a special mention to the 1500 who joined yesterday. Okay, this is getting quite addictive now. 8pm and we're closing in fast on 1,500 new members today! This (by my reckoning) makes it the best single day of recruitment this month. Today's Guardian carries the barely surprising news that one in five members of the House of Lords are working as consultants or advisers to private businesses at the same time as serving in parliament. According to their report, an analysis of the Register of Lords' Interests shows 169 peers reported working as advisers earlier this year, with more than a dozen registering that they were also paid by foreign governments on top of the expenses they are entitled to as peers. They say that the consultancies range from a former Conservative MP advising the company of a Romanian businessman facing ...

I'm a bit of a parish council nut as I've been a parish councillor since 1985 and always seek out quirky things on the notice boards of parish councils when I travel around England. This year was the year in which all parish councils were potentially up for re-election. Unlike most district and Borough councils (who tend to elected in thirds) parish councils are elected once every 4 years when the whole of the council is potentially at the mercy of the electorate. Some parish councils however never really have elections as only enough or too few nominations are forthcoming ...

Between them, these three accounts provide an excellent regular flow of messages to enjoy and to share to help promote the Liberal Democrats and our policy on Europe. First up, former Liberal Democrat MP Matthew Green. He's remarkably indefatigable at finding new Liberal Democrat party members on Twitter and welcoming them. So why not follow Matthew too and join in welcoming new members too? It's a really simple but effective way to make the party stronger and larger. Second, the brilliant Remainer Now, which shares stories from Leave voters who now want Britain to stay in the EU. So again, ...
