This much-mourned line is seen three years before its closure. Note the glimpse of a working Somerset coal mine.

Well, given Michael Heseltine has done it, perhaps it's not such a surprise that Ken Clarke is now also thinking of voting Liberal Democrat: Other Tories of his persuasion have switched to the Lib Dems. Could he? At the age of 79, "it would be rather silly, wouldn't it? I am so obviously a Conservative. All my friends would laugh." He might, though, very well vote for the Lib Dems. "I haven't made my mind up which way I'm going to vote. It depends where Boris has taken us by then. If I was going to cast a protest vote, ...

The new Liberator has arrived, which is pretty impressive seeing as I was still writing for it this time last week. Soon I will inflict Lord Bonkers' latest writings on you, and maybe my review of the new Social Liberal Forum publication The Wolves in the Forest. But this evening let's do what every reader does and turn first to Radical Bulletin, the feature that tells you what is really going on in the Liberal Democrats. There you will find the answer to these questions: Which Lib Dem leadership contended sacked their campaign chief halfway through the recent contest?Which seat ...

Phil Knowles, leader of the Liberal Democrat group on Harborough District Council, has been chosen as the party's parliamentary candidate for South Leicestershire. I have known Phil for 35 years and served on the council with him, so I can say with some authority that South Leicestershire Lib Dems have got themselves a mighty campaigner. The South Leicestershire constituency takes in much of the Harborough District. Among its largest settlements are Blaby, Lutterworth and Broughton Astley

The Apartment (1960)

The Apartment won the Oscar for Best Motion Picture of 1960, and picked up another four: Best Director (Billy Wilder), Best Original Screenplay (Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond), Best Editing (Daniel Mandell) and Best Art Decoration-Set Decoration, Black and White. Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine and Jack Kruschen were all nominated in the acting categories, but lost. The other films that were nominated for Best Motion Picture were The Alamo, Elmer Gantry, Sons and Lovers and The Sundowners; I have seen none of them. The Apartment ranks second on one IMDB rating of 1960 films and fifth on the other, with Psycho ...

She does love her cryptic tweets, does our leader. Classic song... pic.twitter.com/jsO1FUsS7q — Jo Swinson (@joswinson) September 7, 2019 Of course, she could just be introducing her boys to one of the best films of all time. If she is, she could take inspiration from this song which should be our anthem in the weeks leading up to the expected General Election. Certainly, Jo is determined to absolutely go for it, with no limit to our ambitions. Let's hope we are soon saying this to Boris Johnson and his dangerous, reckless, deeply unpleasant band of charlatans and thugs. * Caron ...

One of the enduring myths of British politics is that the Labour Party was uniquely responsible for founding the National Health Service. "It was the Attlee government's introduction of the National Health Service which will rightly go down as Labour's greatest achievement," says the party's website. "Labour created the NHS," maintains the party's shadow health secretary. But this partisan, somewhat sentimental version of history has been demolished over the years by historians of the welfare state. In 1995, Nicholas Timmins started his magisterial (and recently updated) study, The Five Giants: A Biography of the Welfare State, by highlighting the vital ...

As I drove around Swansea yesterday, I looked up at Kilvey Hill and noted the large patch of flowering purple heather that had appeared on part of it. Normally, much more of the hillside is covered in this way, but being in a hurry, I thought nothing more about it. In today's Independent however, we learn that this absence of heather is more common than I thought. The paper quotes the view of the National Trust that the beloved sight of bright purple heather on English moorland is at risk due to climate change: The violaceous vistas of late summer ...

Twice this week, Boris Johnson has used sexist insults. In deeply dignified and mature behaviour for a Prime Minister, he called Jeremy Corbyn a "big girl's blouse" the other day. And now we discover he called David Cameron a "girly swot." This is how Jo Swinson responded. First it was 'big girl's blouse' and now it's 'girly swot'. Boris Johnson thinks being a woman is a weakness. He's going to find out it isn't. https://t.co/o8UNztxrlr — Jo Swinson (@joswinson) September 6, 2019 She took the fight for liberal values to him the other day and he was all over the ...

Following residents' complaints as to how overgrown the Hawkhill is on its north side east of the Bellfield Street junction, I have raised this with the City Council : I have also raised the need to tidy and remove litter on Hawkhill on its south side at the top of the Pennycook car park.
