To secure long-term success for the Liberal Democrats, and to turn our ideals into reality, we need to win at all levels. And that means we need to change the way we do things in the party, as I've written for Liberal Democrat Voice: We should never forget that elections at all levels matter. They directly give us the chance to implement our vision for a liberal democrat society in more communities, and they also are the springboard to future success in elections at other levels. We saw that so clearly this May, where put more Lib Dems into power ...

We should never forget that elections at all levels matter. They directly give us the chance to implement our vision for a liberal democrat society in more communities, and they also are the springboard to future success in elections at other levels. We saw that so clearly this May, where put more Lib Dems into power and set us up win a record number of MEPs, not to mention putting us very much back on the national political map. But the truth is too much of our organisation, especially at the federal level, often defaults to acting as if only ...

I've had two scam calls already today. One on the land line, one on my mobile. The first one said I had a problem with my Sky box and it was out of warranty. I haven't had Sky for a number of years, at which point he very rudely hung up without saying thanks and goodbye. The second one told me I had been in a car accident. It must have given me, what's it called, thingamy, ah yes I remember, amnesia, as I don't remember that accident although I do have a bruise on my leg I can't explain. ...

Brexit Profiteers?

A front-page headline in yesterday's Guardian (1st October) highlighted ministers defending Mr Johnson on "groping allegations." Whilst not wishing to downplay the importance of this incident (these incidents?) I should prefer greater prominence to be given to the allegations that supporters of the prime minister and Brexit are hoping to make considerable, indeed very considerable , financial profits if we do indeed leave the EU with no deal on 31st October. The report of these (actually a denial) appeared only on Page 9. The possibilities of profiting from Brexit by "shorting"* (see below but please don't try it at home ...

[IMG: HG Wells] The Folkestone Book Festival: The Shape of Things to Come brochure has landed! Inspired by the ideas of Sandgate resident, H G Wells, this year's Festival presents one-off events stretching into the wild Romney Marsh, Victorian Tin Tabernacle, 12th century church and seaside fish and chip shop! This year's line-up includes Booker Prize-winning author, Ben Okri who explores the role of fiction in these difficult times; actress Imogen Stubbs reads excepts of Jean Rhys' Wild Sargasso Sea; and The Guardian features writer, Nesrine Malik investigates the stories used to maintain the status quo. Commenting on PM Johnson's Manchester speech today, Liberal Democrat leader, Jo Swinson said: When you strip away the bluff and bluster, this was a speech by a Prime Minister who is determined to crash us out of the EU without a deal. Fanatically repeating 'Get Brexit Done' does not give any comfort to the cancer patient worried about accessing their medication, or the factory worker whose job is on the line. Getting Brexit done puts their lives and their jobs at risk, and that is why Liberal Democrats are working hard to stop it. The Liberal Democrats are determined to ...

It is worth standing back and pausing to consider how remarkable the historic split in the Tory party has been under PM Johnson is just a few weeks. "One Nation" Tories have been the backbone of the Conservative party for a couple of centuries. But now they have been cast out of the party. This extraordinary split can be seen in the words of two "One Nation" Tories who now sit in Parliament as independents. Firstly, we have the great-great-grandson of Tory Prime Minister Lord Salisbury. That is Richard Benyon, the MP for Newbury and "the richest person in the ...

Tabloids and Royals

I am a republican but I do think that the Queen does a pretty good job as Head of State if she avoids dodgy advice from iffy PMs. So no great sympathy for the Royal Family in general. I do, however, have sympathy for the Duchess of Sussex when it comes to tabloid rags and their incessant negative reporting on her that, until now, she has had to just silently accept. Good for her she is fighting back now. As an example of the purile and nonsensical attacks, this article in the Express caught my eye. They start with "In ...

While the Tories were in Manchester at their national conference this week, the opposition met to decide next moves. The choice to be made was do they try and bring forward the date on which Johnson has to ask the EU for an extension, or do they vote to bring the government down and replace it with a government of national unity. Neither were alighted on, with a tacit desire to see where everything goes next before the next move is made. The reasons for this are logical when broken down. A lot of the ex-Tory MPs who have lost ...

The resumption of Parliament has meant that important issues, that would have been sidelined during the ill-fated prorogation, are being discussed. One subject very dear to Tim Farron's heart is his private member's bill, the Access to Radiotherapy Bill, which has been languishing in its first reading stage since December 2017. The resumption of parliament gave him a chance to implore the leader of the House to allow time for its second reading. This Bill is important because it would end the hell of cancer sufferers who have to take 3 hour round trips for radiotherapy day after day, week ...

The big news on this, the final day of Tory conference, is that Boris Johnson has come up with a new fix on the Irish border situation. It's all ready to present to the EU in what sounds like a "take it or leave it, continental scum" sort of manner. I didn't think there could be a worse idea for how to solve the Irish border problem thrown up by Brexit than what we're already heard; turns out I was very wrong on that front. BoJo's latest plan recycles all the worst bits of every other idea and adds a ...

Two and a half years ago, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia could still boast of being a power capable of changing the strategic situation in the Middle East, thanks to its wealth and its alliances. It was the time when the new president of the most powerful country in the world (the United States of America) granted him his first visit abroad. This was the time when it was thought that the privatization of the national company Aramco could bring in some $2 trillion, immediately to be invested in new technologies. This was the time when Crown Prince and Minister ...

As the Prime Minister prepares to launch his 'take-it-or-leave-it-deal' offer to the European Union in his speech tonight, it is worth reflecting that he will be speaking in a hall only made possible because of European Union funding. As Wales-on-line says, anyone leaving the conference centre and getting the tram towards St Peter's Square will see a plastic banner on the wall which says: "This project has been part-funded by the European Union". Anyone getting a coffee near the main hall will see a glass plaque proudly proclaiming the same. In the list of UK projects receiving funding under the ...

I have been involved in Liberal and Liberal Democrat politics, mostly as an activist, councillor and parliamentary candidate, since 1964. During that time there have been thirteen different Prime Ministers, none of whom I agreed with politically at all. Until the advent of the current PM, all of them behaved in a civilised fashion and played the game according to the rules. There was a time when if you broke the law, or lied to parliament, you resigned. How honourable John Profumo now seems, when compared to the present incumbent of 10 Downing Street. Profumo, for those of you too ...

Representatives from Ludford town centre and Ludlow Town Council, along with Viv Parry and myself, met with Crest Nicholson on Monday to discuss temporary construction access to the Foldgate Lane development for a period of up to two months. There are three competing proposals. The developer favours access along and across Foldgate Lane. Ludford parish council wants access from the A49 through an underpass. Viv Parry and I have suggested moving the proposed T-Junction further south on the A49 to make it easier to build. Ours is a more complex proposal but it would be a more satisfactory long term ...
