"In her eight years in Stormont, she four times introduced a Human Rights Bill, which would have created structures for human rights accountability in Northern Ireland." Nicholas Whyte discovers the remarkable career of Sheelagh Murnaghan. The third volume of Charles Moore's biography of Margaret Thatcher is reviewed by Andrew Marr: "Her biggest failure was her attitude to Germany. The fall of the Berlin Wall and the coming together of the communist East and capitalist West is today seen as a pivotal moment of joy and hope. She completely misunderstood it. Her anti-Germanism, going back to her childhood, was so strong ...

Black, Asian and women Labour MPs have asked for a meeting with Jeremy Corbyn over their concern they are being disproportionately targeted for deselection. The author of that article, ITV's political correspondent Paul Brand, later tweeted that meeting will take place on Tuesday afternoon. But how can this be? Surely Labour activists are so woke it hurts? They may be, but the people who command their loyalty - Jeremy Corbyn and Jon Lansman - cut their political teeth in a very different era. When they were young, concern with sexual or racial inequality was widely dismissed on the hard left ...

How am I?

How am I? There's a simple answer – worried, anxious and fatigued. But that's far too simple an answer, as I'm also hopeful, grateful and optimistic. I feel as if I'm swinging between these two...Continue Reading The post How am I? appeared first on ten pence piece.

Responding to the reports that the Government are set to announce it will be compulsory for voters to show identification at the next election, Liberal Democrat shadow minister for the Cabinet Office, Tom Brake said: "The move by the Government to make voter ID compulsory is a thinly-veiled attempt to rig the results of future elections. We know from the pilot back in 2018 that voter fraud was inconsequential, whilst what the pilot did do was turn away a disproportionate number of vulnerable voters. "Boris Johnson is clearly taking a leaf out of Trump's playbook by using false claims about ...

Today, the Liberal Democrats have called on the Conservative Government to ban all arm sales to Turkey. Following the human rights violations in Syria, Chuka Umunna, the Liberal Democrat Shadow Foreign Secretary, said: "It is clear that there have been human rights violations against the Kurdish people in Syria. It is only right that the UK now bans any export of arms that could be used by Turkey in Syria. "It has long been Liberal Democrat policy to oppose arm sales to those who commit human rights violations and the situation in Syria is no different. The Conservative government must ...

As mentioned yesterday, we spent last weekend in Dordrecht, enjoying the art and environment of this Dutch city. [IMG: IMG_7363.JPG] The Hof is now part of the Dordrechts Museum where we spent the Sunday morning. I'm not normally a huge fan of art museums; maybe it was the mood I was in (wedding anniversary weekend, so some celebration) but I saw a lot to like here. The pictures of the art are not mine, mostly from the museum's official website. There were several temporary exhibitions on, two on individual artists which didn't do much for me but also a brilliant ...

By tradition this - the B side of their 1967 single A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You - was the first record on which the Monkees were allowed to play the instruments themselves. Peter Tork, heard beating the living daylights out of a harpsichord here, was on various tracks before this, but it was their debut as a real group. I have chosen a clip from the Prefab Four's television series. The action has little to do with the mood and lyrics of the song, but it is a reminder of just what a treat this programme was ...

Yesterday London Liberal Democrats packed the congregational church in Kentish Town for an autumn conference that was a mixture of celebration and determination. The celebration was largely because of the brilliant European election results in May, when the party topped the polls in London, sending three MEPs to Brussels. Moreover, the region's membership at 24,000 is [...]

Over on the party website, the Party's Vice President BAME, Isabelle Parasram, writes about how she is working with the English Party to improve diversity and our party's engagement with diverse communities. For example, when I attend high profile events, wherever possible I also invite BAME members and supporters to attend with me. One such event was the launch of the Commonwealth 8.7 Network at the Australian High Commission. Through the Commonwealth 8.7 Network, over 60 civil society organisations will work together to push for greater action across the Commonwealth in eradicating modern slavery and achieving the United Nations Sustainable ...

Here's the latest piece I've done for the party website on my pitch to be the next President of the Liberal Democrats. Probably the most common question I've had so far in this campaign is 'what's the role of President?' It's an important question because it gets to the heart of what we need to do to be more successful in our ambition to build a fair, free and open society, as it says in our constitution. One part of the role - being the voice of the grassroots in the room with the party leadership - is one all ...

Over at the Telegraph we learn that the UK Government is to announce in the Queen's speech that it will push ahead with proposals to require voters across the country to show identification such as driving licences or passports before casting their ballot. They say that Ministers are planning to introduce a legal requirement for voters to produce photographic ID, in order to safeguard against electoral fraud. A new Electoral Integrity Bill will also limit the number of relatives for whom anyone can act as a proxy, and outlaw the "harvesting" of postal ballots by political parties and activists. Although ...

MPs will be able to hear the end of the rally in Parliament Square. The Lib Dems will be marching in support of a People's Vote with the very clear aim to stop Brexit. We will be meeting at 11 am at the Duke of Wellington Memorial Statue at Hyde Park Corner. In October last year, I made the 800 miles in a day round trip to make my ...
