Back in 2008 I quoted Hazel Blears' memories of appearing in A Taste of Honey as a little girl: "The director wanted a couple of street urchins in the film and saw me and my brother playing in the street, asked me mum if we could be in the film and, being the proud working-class woman that she is, she made absolutely sure we had our Sunday best clothes on and were all scrubbed up.This evening Talking Pictures TV screened a tribute to the wonderful Dora Bryan. In it, Rita Tushingham told the same story of street urchins turning up ...

Use the arrows above to see a slide show of today's People's Vote march After today's historic session in parliament, which has extended PM Johnson's unblemished record of defeats, Jo Swinson has written to party members with the following summary: After today's votes, the fight to stop Brexit continues. Hundreds of thousands of people are marching outside Parliament, where I've just finished voting, to demand a final say. After today's votes, Boris Johnson must obey the law and send a letter asking for Article 50 to be extended. We will use that extra time to secure a People's Vote, to ...

The People's Vote March

The sun was shining on the People's Vote March in London today as several hundred thousand demonstrators manifested their wish to stay in the EU. As ever at such events, the mood was like a carnival and a cheer arose when it became known that the House of Commons — sitting on a Saturday for [...]

See why David Buxton, who as well as being a great PPC in East Hampshire was co-founder of the Liberal Democrats Disability Association, is backing me for Party President.

Just in case we thought that anything in the UK at the moment could be more dysfunctional than the House of Commons and Brexit, what remains of the UKIP party seems keen to prove us wrong. As the Guardian reports they have moved to suspend its leader Richard Braine amid a fresh power struggle within the party: On Saturday Braine confirmed that Ukip's national executive committee (NEC) and the party chair, Kirstan Herriot, had attempted to oust him but questioned whether she had the authority to do so. Braine said: "As I understand it the chairman has asked that I ...

Lawrence of Arabia won the Oscar for Best Motion Picture of 1961, and picked up another six: Best Director (David Lean), Best Original Score (Maurice Jarre), Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Film Editing and Best Sound. Peter O'Toole and Omar Sharif were nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, and Robert Bolt and Michael Wilson for Best Adapted Screenplay, beaten in two of those three cases by To Kill A Mockingbird. Norman Lamb has been part of the MPs for a deal group in Parliament. He has from the start wanted us to agree the least damaging form of Brexit. This morning he has tweeted a short video to explain that he will not be supporting this deal. I think it is important to acknowledge how hard this will have been for him and to reflect on what he has said about the abuse he has received. We are better than this. Watch here. My decision! I hope people will accept that it has been reached after a lot of soul ...

Thank you, Norman: My decision! I hope people will accept that it has been reached after a lot of soul searching and on the basis of what I think is best for the country and my constituents. I hope we can avoid the bile and abuse on both sides which has characterised this debate. pic.twitter.com/hH7nE6lZiU — Norman Lamb (@normanlamb) October 19, 2019

As MPs meet to discuss the nation's course for the next few generations, I thought it might be useful to go through the Order Paper. First up is a statement from the Prime Minister followed by a vote on the deal itself. There are a number of amendments to the motion. The SNP's Angus McNeill has put down a straightforward revoke one. The rest of the SNP has put down an amendment calling for an extension and a General Election. They would prefer to get that over now than have it happen at the same time as Alex Salmond's trial, ...

I've just spent a week in the Brecon Beacons and took the opportunity to try a Transport for Wales train from Ebbw Vale to Cardiff. Ebbw Vale Town Station (the end of the line) is very basic and very exposed; a ticket machine, a one train per hour frequency and a small shelter is about it – a far cry from say Merseyrail with it's 15 minute frequency and staffed stations with ticket offices/toilets. The ticket machine, whilst working, needed quite a hard pounding on its keyboard for it to take any notice of what you were trying to tell ...

I remember the last time the House of Commons sat on a Saturday. It was in the immediate aftermath of Argentina invading the British Falkland Islands. The British Government had pretty much neglected the islands and their inhabitants, who didn't want to find themselves under Argentinian rule. I was 14 years old. I spent the 1982 Easter holidays decorating my bedroom under instruction from my Mum with the new radio station Moray Firth Radio playing in the background. On the hourly news programmes, syndicated from Independent Radio News, Anna Soubry gave us up to the minute accounts of what was ...

Basically it is being sold to the ERG as staking the ground for no deal in a year's time. BREAKING: John Baron reveals the NO DEAL promise from Michael Gove & Dominic Raab that is making #Brexit extremists vote for this fake deal.
