In May, Shropshire Council agreed to follow the lead of councils around the country and declare a climate emergency. But the council leader would not allow councillors to set a deadline for the council or the county becoming carbon neutral. The result was a declaration of a climate emergency without any sense of emergency. A petition published on the council website today calls on the council to achieve net carbon zero emissions from the council's activities by 2030. It is vital that the council achieves carbon neutrality by 2030. That will contribute towards the future of the planet. It will ...

The Liberal Democrats have written to the Prime Minister and demanded that he confirm if the Conservative Government has sanctioned any intelligence gathering or surveillance on MPs and, if so, on what legal basis. The calls follow briefings from a Downing Street source that the government was working on "extensive investigations into Dominic Grieve, Oliver Letwin and Hilary Benn and their involvement with foreign powers and the funding of their activities". Liberal Democrat Shadow Foreign Secretary Chuka Umunna warned that Downing Street's behaviour was designed to "suppress dissent" and has written to Boris Johnson seeking clarity. Liberal Democrat Shadow Foreign ...

In the almost 10 years I have been an MP, I have never seen the timetable for debating a Bill become such an issue. But, it's not just because it's to do with Brexit. Let's be clear...the Deal we are debating is a constitutional treaty between the UK and the EU and its 27 member states that will set the foundations for our lives for decades to come. It is not like any deal that most people have been familiar with or negotiated in their time. There are actually two deals here - two Brexits being negotiated. We have the ...

[IMG: SCAM] Action Fraud and others are reporting a scam by text where criminals are sending out distressing messages. How this scam works: Victims receive a text message from a loved-one which says they are in hospital The only way that they can make contact is via text message Victims are asked to purchase mobile phone top-up codes and text it to the criminal Once the criminals have the code, they can get the cash credited to their own mobile phone account. Protect yourself: These messages can evolve into more elaborate scenarios and play on your emotions and get you ...

And now for the goodnews

Back to Northern Ireland again! This time some good news. Westminster legislation has now been enacted to put an end to the near-total ban on abortions and the outright ban on same sex marriage. Northern Ireland has now been brought into alignment with the rest of the UK and Ireland. It would have been better for the liberalisation of the laws to have come from the Northern Ireland assembly but

Go to see 'Official Secrets'. It will remind you of the hard choices Liberals have to make in swimming against the tide of the received wisdom of the public debate. And it will remind you that we stuck out our necks, against the received wisdom of almost the entire media, both the main parties, and much expert opinion, in challenging the case for the Iraq war. The film is about Katharine Gun, a GCHQ employee with doubts about the drift towards the invasion of Iraq, who leaks (to the Observer) a memo from the US National Security Agency requesting material ...

Brexit secretary Stephen Barclay isn't exactly performing well while in the spotlight. He recently described the Brexit deal as "cracking" for Northern Ireland businesses as it would give unfettered, frictionless access to the Single Market while enjoying all the benefits of being in the UK customs area. This begs the question, why should the rest of the UK not benefit in the same way? But now we

The Liberal Party of Canada have beaten the Conservatives in the Federal Election but have lost their majority in 'the Hill'. The Liberals won 157 seats (down 20), with the Conservatives trailing behind on 121. It was a good night for the separatist Bloc Quebecois (BQ), who won 32 seats in the region (up from 10 in 2015), while the NDP were pushed into fourth after losing nearly half of their seats. The Green Party trebled their numbers in the house to three. The real story is that the Liberals actually lost the popular vote to the Conservatives and shed ...

The Guardian reports that Northern Ireland is to legalise abortion and same-sex marriage after an 11th-hour attempt by the region's assembly to block change collapsed into farce. They say that anti-abortion groups led by the Democratic Unionist party tried to avert liberalisation by recalling the mothballed chamber at Stormont for the first time in almost three years. But discord and walkouts stymied debate and left the assembly deserted: The new legislation puts the House of Commons on track to legislate for marriage equality by January 2020, paving the way for same-sex couples to wed from 14 February - Valentine's Day. ...

Future options for managing council housing [IMG: Council Housing] Council homes are currently looked after by East Kent Housing on our behalf. They carry out safety checks, manage repairs, collect rent etc. Earlier this year we discovered serious problems with a range of safety checks at some properties looked after by East Kent Housing. We are sorry if that caused you to worry. We are pleased to say we have made an enormous amount of progress in fixing those problems. To make sure the same thing does not happen again, we have asked a range of experts to look into ...

This deal is the beginning of a tortuous process, said Jonny Oates when he spoke in the Lords, and it would be the poorest who would be hit hardest. Here is his speech in full: My Lords, the Prime Minister, we are told, has succeeded where all said he would fail. He has returned apparently triumphant, with a deal that the nay-sayers said could not be done. Or so his champions claim. Not all the nay-sayers doubted he could do it. I certainly did not, and I suspect that many others who have studied him over the years did not ...

There has been a notice posted on the Corve Street bus shelter for a few weeks. It announces a rerouting of the 292 bus service within Ludlow. From 4 November, according to the notice, the bus will no longer serve Corve Street or the supermarkets on Station Drive. It will no longer pass the rail station. It will instead depart from opposite Ludlow Fish Bar on Upper Galdeford, which doesn't have a bus shelter. There has been no explanation from the bus operator, R&B Travel, for the change. I guess it wants to shorten the route to improve timekeeping. But ...
