Whilst both the Conservatives and Labour find themselves in the grip of extremists it is good to know that there is somewhere where moderates can feel at home. Over the last few months five former Conservative and three former Labour MP's have joined the Liberal Democrats, showing that moderates from both sides of the political spectrum have a home here. I've always known that there are a number of liberal thinkers within the other parties and it is great that more and more of them are recognising that the Liberal Democrats are their natural home.

The Liberal Democrats are delighted to announce that Antoinette Sandbach has joined the party. Antoinette, who is the MP for Eddisbury in Cheshire, will contest her seat as the Liberal Democrat candidate in the coming General Election. She is the eighth addition to the Liberal Democrat parliamentary party in the last few months. Liberal Democrat MP Antoinette Sandbach said: This general election will be the most important in my lifetime. The Member of Parliament for Eddisbury, Antoinette Sandbach, is joining the Liberal Democrats. One of the twenty-one Conservative MPs to have had the whip withdrawn after rebelling over Brexit, she had previously supported Remain in the European referendum. She will be standing for the party at the general election in Eddisbury, with the former Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the seat, Ian Priestner, tweeting his welcome for the news. Antoinette Sandbach said: This general election will be the most important in my lifetime. People have a very clear choice. The Conservative party offers years of uncertainty whilst the Liberal ...

I was 12 when I watched this. It was the scariest thing I had ever seen and that is how I still remember it, having never plucked up the courage to watch it again. In fact from what I have dared skim through, it looks even scarier today because of those dreadful Seventies threads. Enlivened by the presence of Mr Bucket, The Exorcism is an interesting marriage of marxist Play for Today and folk horror. At least I suspect it is. If any reader dares to watch it, please let me know if I am right.

Cummings and Goings

I kind of stopped posting for a while as most things I wanted to say were quickly overtaken by events. I didn't expect Johnson to comply with the Benn Act even though he sent the letter, unsigned. I didn't expect a Conservative and Unionist Party deal that put a Customs border down the Irish Sea. I didn't expect Labour to go along with a General Election when sitting 16 points behind in some polls. I didn't expect my local Independent MP to say he was going to stand again but then I definitely hadn't expected him, as a former Labour ...

Liberal Democrat members have selected Alex Wagner as their candidate for Stafford ahead of the December general election. He is a full-time campaigner, well known in much of the West Midlands for work done to support hardworking councillors in their communities. Alex is the youngest Lib Dem candidate in the country, at 18. He was born in Shrewsbury and went to school in rural Shropshire. Reacting to his selection, Alex Wagner said: I am delighted to be standing to represent Stafford. It is an immense privilege to be able to fly the flag for the Liberal Democrats at such a ...

Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor Ed Davey has warned that Labour's spending plans are totally undermined by Jeremy Corbyn's commitment to Brexit with its huge hit to growth and tax revenue. He said: "Jeremy Corbyn wants to spend, spend, spend whilst still pursuing his own form of costly Brexit. Any form of Brexit will make Britain's economy weaker and people poorer, meaning much less tax revenue for the Treasury."Corbyn simply can't square these spending promises with his Brexit policy and the cost of Brexit."A vote for the Liberal Democrats is a vote to stop Brexit - so we can boost our ...

For one role I looked at, the top 3 sources of support are: You can join the Liberal Democrats Local Party Officers Facebook group, to make contact and share best practice with other officers. No prizes for having guessed that the Liberal Democrat general election slogan would feature Brexit: Stop Brexit. Build a brighter future. The second part, though, is crucial. As I've commented in many of the Party President hustings over the last couple of weeks, the Liberal Democrats are against Brexit not because we want to preserve the world as it was. Rather, we're against Brexit because of all the improvements we want to bring – and which are best delivered by being in the European Union. Effective international cooperation to tackle climate change, for example. The old two parties have failed ...

My apologies to anyone who realises, as I do, that I haven't been posting enough recently. I try to put most of my contributions here, but I'm very aware that I don't always. If there is really anyone out there impatient to hear what I think, I'm usually blogging at Radix early most weeks... In the meantime, I have been worrying about the future of the UK after Brexit, given the enormous strains that will be put on the union. I'm not a unionist. I don't think Nick Clegg was right when he declared the Lib Dems a unionist party. ...

As argued in the previous post, my strong preference is (now was) for this parliament to continue scrutinising Johnson's Brexit Bill, hoping for an amendment to put it to a referendum, and then, after the referendum, and whatever the result, have the General election. Alas, that is not to be. I regard the Fixed Term Parliament Act (FTPA) as the one great Liberal Democrat constitutional gain of the 2010 Coalition (the other two, for electoral reform and House of Lords reform, were both scuppered by combinations of Tory deceit and Labour pusillanimity). The purpose of the FTPA was to make ...

This country is suffering because we have a Prime Minister and a Leader of the Opposition who play up fear and division. Britain needs a leader who can cut through the noise and grab people in the heart, highlighting the best of us, not the worst. We need someone to inspire us to be for each other, not against each other. Jo Swinson is that leader. She combines humour, candour and plain speaking to bring people in. She reaches well beyond the liberal democrat comfort zone of our party by connecting with people. The way she wrote about the birth ...

There is something different about this election. I've stood in a number of parliamentary elections and never before have the police felt the need to send advice to candidates about their personal and online safety. I have already had a number of comments made on my Facebook page threatening me with serious physical violence or being extremely abusive. This isn't the way that it should be. Surely we should be able to debate and discuss matters with one another, even when we disagree, without resorting to abuse or violence? We really do need to change the whole tone of this ...

In the General Election campaign, the electorate will be presented with a Tory promise to 'Get Brexit Done'. This is one of the slogans that will be repeated over and over again. The message is that 'chaos has reigned', and now voters have a chance to vote Tory and 'get it all over with'. The proposition is that if re-elected, PM Johnson's regime will approve the two key pieces of Brexit legislation, and then immediately pull the UK out of the EU. Job done. This propaganda line is designed to impose an historic deceit. Many Remain voters may be deceived. ...

Keith Page of Nursery Road mentioned to me that the footpath through to Normington Close from Lambshear Lane is not easily negotiated at night due to the street lamp in it being up within the canopy of trees. In turn I raised the matter at a recent Lydiate Parish Council meeting where Borough Councillor Pat O'Hanlon was present. Interesting detail from the latest Survation poll for the Daily Mail, asking voters what they make of the Liberal Democrat policy of revoking Article 50 if the party wins a general election: The Liberal Democrats have said they will cancel Brexit if they won the next general election. To what extent does this policy make you more or less likely to vote for the Liberal Democrats? 2016 Remain voters: net +42 more likely 2016 Leave voters: net -67% less likely That sort of polarisation works for a core votes strategy, an approach of course that I'm in favour of. The controversy over Labour's failure to tackle anti-Semitism has hit home this morning with the news that their official Jewish affiliate will not support them in the upcoming general election campaign because of Jeremy Corbyn's "failure of leadership" on the issue. The smell of chicken pervades the political atmosphere this morning. Probably the most predictable aspect of this General Election is that Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn would try to cut Jo Swinson out of the Leaders's Debates. I mean, why would they want to be completely shown up by a fresh, original opponent with compelling arguments? And so it looks very much like they are doing just that. Jeremy Corbyn's spokesperson told the BBC However, when asked about a three-way discussion with Ms Swinson, the spokesman replied: "There are only two people who can be prime minister at the end ...
