Britain's public schools began as charities set up for the education of the poor. In the 19th century they squirmed their way out of that obligation and set about educating the children of the rich instead. But this is not just a story of privilege, for the squirming coincided with the rise of the British Empire and the public schools took on the task of producing the caste that would run it. That caste had to be tough, self-sufficient and independent of any ties of home. Hence the classic public school regime of cold baths, corporal punishment and compulsory team ...

Historian and reforming Whig politician, Thomas Babington Macaulay is one of Leicestershire's greatest sons. He was born and lived in the county at Rothley Temple, now the Rothley Court Hotel. When I visited it I was chiefly concerned with its inglorious place in English cricket history. 'The Whig view of history' has been out of fashion for as long as anyone can remember, and the past few years have been enough to cure anyone of the notion that progress is inevitable. Nevertheless, if you dip into Macaulay's works you will find them full of good things. Today Charnwood Borough Council ...

No end in sight for the interminable talk of a snap election. Indeed, the term "snap" now seems very out of place. The snap election was possibly going to happen in September, then October, then November, then December, with a good measure of speculation now that it could be January (with a few saying it could even be May). So, Jeremy Corbyn demands a general election as he thinks history will

Second paragraph of third page of vol 1: "I never bin asked for so many flowers! Seems like the new queen's crazy about them." "Anyone seen 'er?" "I saw 'er, a real princess!" Second paragraph of third page of vol 2: Frédégonde (very pregnant): "Come in!" I got this because I had greatly enjoyed the six-volume series about Eleanor of Aquitaine (1+2, 3+4, 5+6) also published as part of Delcourt's Reines de Sang (Queens of Blood) range, looking at historical women rulers with reputations for ruthlessness, and I also wanted to educate myself about the Frankish kingdoms in this part ...

Sorry, but we have news of another road closure. The Westerleigh Road will be closed from Monday 11th November for 3 days both ways between The Folly pub and the traffic lights at the top of Westerleigh Hill. This is due to carriageway patching work by South Glos Council. There are bound to be delays while this busy commuter route is shut.

1. ignore Prime Minister Johnson's call for a General Election on the 12th December. To satisfy the Parliament Act he needs the support of two thirds of MPs to get it, and he controls less than half of them. The opposition parties needn't even vote against, but just abstain. This will be awkward for Labour, as Mr Corbyn has stated that he will agree to a general election as soon as "no deal is off the table," which it now appears to be. However, the last three Tory prime ministers haven't worried too much about breaking their words, so he ...

On Saturday, William Wallace closed the debate in the Lords for the LIb Dems. He said that during all the hours of debate, he'd not heard any positive arguments for the deal. People were just saying that we needed to get Brexit done. My Lords, the noble Lord, Lord Lamont, has just said that remainers do not admit that the EU is not just an economic project. The European Union has always been a political project. The memorandum presented to Harold Macmillan in 1961 made it very clear that it was in our political interests to join the European Economic ...

So with the election of Jo and the upcoming election, the Corbynistas have gone into overdrive. So here are a few arguments, graphics and links to help. Our achievements: Yeah well you didn't stop the Tories from doing anything or restrain them in any way! 21 extreme Tory policies the Lib Dems blocked Don't blame me, blame Clegg: 'There's so much I want to do, but can't', says Cameron as he reveals to the Mail how Lib Dems are holding him ...

I noted, in passing, yesterday that there was a decent sized and quite varied field for the six vacancies as Vice Presidents of the ALDE Party. And perhaps I need to go into more detail... so here is your guide to the "runners and riders". First, there is a notional election for the position of President, and I say notional because Hans van Baalen, from VVD (Netherlands), is unopposed in his quest for a third and final term in the role. He could lose, theoretically, but won't. Let's start from the top of the picture, with our own Sal Brinton. ...

I'll admit that I am still hoping for a general election in 2019, although I think the possibility of it is fading quickly. Corbyn doesn't want to ram it through against the will of the PLP – although I do think he wants an election, as it is the only way for him to avoid having to do things that are worse from his perspective. A second referendum hangs around like a terrible possibility and he has to pretend he wants one while thwarting it. It must be exhausting; much better to get into his campaigning element, fighting for his ...

Responding to the announcement that the Conservative Government will table a motion for a General Election on Monday, Leader of the Liberal Democrats Jo Swinson said:"Boris Johnson is trying to distract from his government's failure. He has missed his do-or-die deadline and is now demanding that Parliament give him a General Election and the time to ram through his Bill without proper scrutiny."The Liberal Democrats will not support any election until it is clear that we can avoid crashing out with no deal, and that needs an extension from the EU."The Liberal Democrats have consistently campaigned for a People's Vote ...

A democratic system can only succeed if it is built on trust and respect. On that basis, most are in real trouble, but at the heart of all the western democracies, whatever people think or say about politicians as a group or even individually, the vast majority of voters are happy to get on with their lives, while leaving those they elected to continue to run the country. There is no real demand amongst the general population to overthrow the government, other than by democratic means. In fact even proposals to better democratise our country by introducing proportional elections or ...

Donald Trump likes to portray himself as strong man. A hard, tough man who stands up to the rest of the world, tweets it like it is and puts America first. The evidential facts tell a different story. Trump is increasingly becoming the puppet of anti-democratic strongmen such as Turkish President Erdogan, Hungarian Prime Minister Orban and Russia's Vladimir Putin who use the American president's craving for acceptance to manipulate him for their own ends. Trump grew up in the New York borough of Queens when it was the first stop for the latest generation of immigrants struggling to survive ...

I thought I'd heard pretty much everything out there that Isaac Hayes had had a hand in but I've recently come across an Album by Trumpeter Donald Byrd which was produced by Hayes back in 1981. The album's called Love Byrd and for me there's one stand out track called 'Feel like lovin you today' and it's pure Hayes at his very best with the horn of Byrd being quite beautiful. Here's a link to the track on You Tube and here's a link to Wikipedia all about the album:- wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_Byrd Isaac plays piano, Fender Rhodes, vibraphone, percussion, synthesizer ...

From Sheena Wellington : "Christina" - Elisabeth FlettSaturday 26th October - 11am-noon (doors open 10.30am) Fresh from the sell-out Edinburgh Fringe run of her acclaimed production "Roots", Elisabeth Flett returns to the Wighton with the world premiere of "Christina". The show is inspired by the 19th century manuscript book of Christina Gib of Maulesden House, Brechin. Elisabeth has researched the elusive Christina's story to create a fascinating musical and historical journey. Elisabeth, of course no stranger to the Wighton, is currently based in London. She studied Classical Recorder (BMus Hons) at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating with ...
