Any election is hard work. This one, taking place in the cold and dark, is going to be even tougher. We'll be providing a regular slot which reflects the lighter side of the campaign. Send us your funny stories from the campaign trail to voice@libdemvoice.org or tweet me on @caronmlindsay. You can DM me if you want your story to get out but your anonymity to be preserved... My first proper election canvassing session yesterday was a wet affair. The rain held off until I was at my furthest point from my lift home. It was proper rain, too – ...

Liberal Democrat members looking for encouragement should read the piece Toby Helm wrote for today's Observer after visiting Winchester: On the city's streets there is not only a deep dislike of Brexit, but also a profound distrust of the prime minister, Boris Johnson, even among people who have voted Tory in the past. Kevin Hayter, who co-owns a local construction company, voted Tory in 2010 and 2015 when David Cameron was leader, but said he would never do so again because the party had changed utterly. "They are now a tawdry, deceitful lot who kicked out all the decent one-nation ...

The Whinnies Community Garden in Sunniside yesterday had a Halloween event in the afternoon. I popped in so I could part with cash for raffle tickets and for cream scones. Very naughty but nice.

For most of last week I was in Athens, the cradle of democracy, for the ALDE Party Congress, which brought together dozens of Liberal parties from across Europe, not just the EU. The link below is to a Guardian newspaper article on tactical voting and it's worth a read:- Because of our warped 1st Past the Post electoral system we are often placed in a situation where we have to vote for a candidate/party we don't really support to stop a candidate/party whom we really dislike from being elected. Under a fair/proportional voting system this would not be necessary but we are where we are until we get fair votes. There are probably two types of anti-Tory/anti-Brexit voters who are looking for advice as to how to vote so as to ...

EU citizens

No one seriously believes that the Home Office will be able to grant settled status to everyone who's eligible within two years. Thousands will be left effectively undocumented and subject to the Conservatives' Hostile Environment. Liberal Democrats demand better for the Europeans who've made their lives here and contribute so much to our economy, our public services and our society. They must not become the victims of a new Windrush scandal. Even a perfect Settled Status scheme is merely a fix for something we shouldn't be giving up: EU free movement. The UK benefits hugely from free movement, from our ...

Second paragraph of third chapter (a long one):'Well, it's nice to know that the creature can smile,' continued Beatrice. 'I sometimes wonder whether Madame Balzac is human.' Sidney tittered again. The third occupant of the lift stretched her smile a little further as evidence of continued politeness. Beatrice and Sidney seemed to be forever talking of that Madame Balzac, who must be a very old and dear friend. So real had she become as a result of constant reference that she might have been in the lift with them. It seemed that almost as soon as her changing moods were ...

An anthem for a December general election. California Dreamin' was written by the married couple John Phillips (the man with the guitar here) and Michelle Phillips (the woman who isn't Mama Cass Elliot). Apparently John dreamt half the song and woke Michelle to help him finish it. It was a hit in the US in 1965 and in Britain the following year. There's an odd Mandela Effect in the song. I would have sworn the lyrics went "I began to pray", but they clearly sing "I pretend to pray".

The other elections

Here's my latest piece for Liberal Democrat Voice about the party's internal elections: Quite rightly, nearly all our attention now is on winning public elections: winning those council by-elections coming in before the general election and winning then in the general election too. There is also the tail-end of the party's internal elections, with most likely, given some of the problems with the voting system, quite a few members still to vote. (If you haven't yet received your ballot paper, elections@libdems.org.uk can assist.) Those internal contests matter. They will determine, for example, who is on the Federal Policy Committee (FPC), ...

Representatives from Ludford parish council and Ludlow Town Council, along with Viv Parry and myself, met with Crest Nicholson on 3 October to discuss temporary construction access to the Foldgate Lane development. The housing developer has planned to create a haul road entered from Foldgate Lane to begin construction on the site. This was opposed by all councillors at the meeting. Now, Crest Nicholson has abandoned that plan. It will instead construct the site from an access from the A49 as set out in the original planning permission. Details of that access are not yet available. The now abandoned proposal ...

A Labour MP has claimed that Boris Johnson knew of Vote Leave's overspend during the 2016 EU referendum, but appears to have failed to tell the authorities even though the payment was subsequently ruled to be illegal. The Guardian reports says that Ian Lucas has revealed that he has seen correspondence obtained during the parliamentary inquiry into disinformation and democracy which showed that Johnson's most senior aide, Dominic Cummings, told the Electoral Commission that the prime minister, and his cabinet colleague Michael Gove, knew of the overspend by the pro-Brexit organisation. The Electoral Commission last year judged that Vote Leave ...
