Courtesy of the Guardian's You Tube channel. Jo talked about the Lib Dems being the party of business and set out our strategy: The speech went down reasonably well. Carolyn Fairbairn, the CBI head said afterwards: It was good to hear commitments from the Liberal Democrats on working with firms to tackle climate change, improve skills and backing business as a force for good. "Increasing investment in infrastructure will better connect the UK's regions and nations, close productivity gaps and facilitate a step change in exports. "The Liberal Democrats recognise the broken business rates system needs fundamental reform. But moving ...

The other day, on a whim, I caught the bus to South Kilworth. I am glad I did, because I was able to add to my collection of mud walls. It ran along one side of the approach to the church - that tin roof would originally have been slate or thatch. There was also a wall bounding a stretch of the churchyard whose roof looked in need of replacement.

Tonight the Liberal Democrats and SNP lost their court bid for inclusion in the ITV Leaders' debate tomorrow night. Sal Brinton was at the Royal Courts of Justice and had this to say afterwards: The Liberal Democrats' position in this election and that of our leader is unique: Jo Swinson is the only leader of a national party fighting to stop brexit. "Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn should not be allowed to sidestep debating the issue of Brexit with someone who wants to remain, and ITV should not give them the opportunity to do so. "That is why this is ...

Most of us are familiar with the idea that all forms of transport and travel powered by carbon based fuels are damaging to the environment and that we need to cut buck on their use if global heating is to be kept within bounds. It came as a surprise to me that the world textile industry is one of the major causes of environmental desegregation. The facts detailed below are taken form an article by Sandra Laville, the Guardian's environment correspondent, published last June. 1. The textile industry creates 1.2bn tonnes of CO2 per year, more than international aviation and ...

I'm pissed. Not in an alcoholic way for I am still tee-total but in a more angry sense. As I've gotten older I believe I've become wiser to the world around me. I've become more critical of decisions and rather than take them at face-value, tried to look behind the headline to see what the real situation is. That happened once more again today when I was thinking about the Lib Dems and SNP's bid at the High Court to get into tomorrow nights ITV debate. The media company have invited the leaders of the Labour Party and the Conservative ...

I've been going belatedly through the May 2019 local government election results for Northern Ireland, and projecting them onto the Westminster / Assembly constituency boundaries. Westminster projection In three cases, the party with most votes in May does not hold the Westminster seat. The first, obviously, is North Down where Independent MP Sylvia Hermon is retiring. DUP are ahead here on May local govt figures - but Alliance can surely expect tactical boost from Greens not standing. (Other candidates are UUP and Conservatives.) DUP UUP Cons Oth U Alliance Green Oth SDLP SF 2019lg 29.5% 19.8% 2.1% 0.9% 25.6% 14.4% ...

Targeting effort into the most marginal seats is crucial under first past the post. A few extra votes in the right seat can be the difference between winning or losing.

[IMG: Gary Fuller sweeping up] At a recent Sandgate and West Folkestone Councillors Surgery, a resident had raised with me that the "Jacob's Ladder" footpath rising from Sandgate Hill to the Folkestone School for Girls / Coolinge Lane was fairly overgrown and increasingly slippy underfoot. Despite attempts by myself and Folkestone and Hythe Council Officers to get it cleaned up we were caught between Kent Highways and Veolia both claiming it was someone else's responsibility. So, this morning, we sorted it ourselves. Councillor Gary Fuller and I joined Giles and Gary from the District Council and a local volunteer, and ...

One of the advantages of reading constitutions is that you tend to have a better grasp of the rules of the contest. And, if you read more than one constitution, you're likely to have a better grasp of the intersections between them. Better still, if you had a hand in writing one of them... When the new Federal International Relations Committee emerged from the Party's most recent governance review, I was the Secretary of its predecessor, and I realised quite quickly that someone was going to have to deal with the constitutional niceties. Given the makeup of the Committee, that ...

I was lucky enough to go to University in the days where not only was tuition free but students got grants for living expenses (mainly beer and chips). Later in life my then employer paid for me to do an Open University Professional Certificate in Management. Today I'm doing courses at a variety of top Universities from around the world via EdX. These courses are completely free of charge. You can pay for verification and certificates if you want at nominal cost but if it is the learning you are after it won't cost a penny. In recent years British Kurds have been increasingly interested in and attracted to the Liberal Democrat vision for a liberal, tolerant and open society. This trend continues to grow with many reaching out with questions on party policy and how they can help elect a liberal government. The UK 2011 national census revealed that approximately 48,000 British people had identified themselves as Kurdish under the ethnicity self designation question, although the number of British Kurds is thought to be considerably higher today. Kurds constitute a significant diaspora in the United Kingdom and across the rest of Europe, Kurdish homelands are ...

There are two Anti-Semitism rows dominating the media this morning. In one case the party concerned has taken swift action and suspended the accused individual, in the other no action has been taken because apparently, no complaint has been received. As the BBC report, Plaid Cymru has suspended a party member included in its party election broadcast over allegations of anti-Semitism. The party said it will conduct an investigation into historical social media comments made by Sahar Al-Faifi. Meanwhile, Mail-online report that a Labour Election candidate organised and ran a secret Facebook group which advises party members, including alleged Holocaust ...

The answer is clear. The Liberal Democrats are the natural party of business. Lib Dems respond to campaign groups' call to ban fracking Responding to campaign calls from Friends of the Earth and others for the next government to ban fracking, Liberal Democrat Climate Emergency spokesperson Wera Hobhouse said: Boris Johnson's Conservatives sold a lie when they announced a ban on fracking. "It's frustrating but there is not much we can do about it." That's the message from Tracey Huffer, Shropshire Councillor for Ludlow South after an essential road safety scheme outside Ludlow Primary School on Sandpits Road was been delayed by several months. The delay is likely to last several months but there is some good news. Tracey explains: "Councillors and school governors have been pressing for a road safety scheme outside Ludlow Primary School for years. In the spring we agreed with Shropshire Council that a raised platform would be put in place outside the school to slow traffic down. ...
