All good things must come to an end, I am told, and my time on the Party's Federal International Relations Committee has come to an end after five occasionally glorious years, following today's publication of the Federal Party election results. In truth, I didn't do too badly, coming seventh on first preferences in an election for six vacancies although, in the final analysis, I was pushed down to eighth on transfers, but only just. And, given that I was beaten by some very worthy candidates, I can't really complain. Some churn is necessary to keep committees fresh, and I am ...

Alan Rice finds Black American troops were welcome in Britain during the second world war, but Jim Crow wasn't: "The pub was a place of sanctuary for black troops where they mingled with, mainly friendly, locals, and where the segregation many had to endure in the American South was thankfully absent." Schoolgirl debating societies gave girls a political education in the years before women's suffrage, argues Helen Sunderland. "A young miner who was a member of the Ashington Debating and Literary Improvement Society in Northumberland, and who was killed by a fall of coal in 1899, died with a translation ...

Tomorrow's Observer reports the results of polls in three London constituencies: Kensington, Wimbledon and Finchley and Golders Green. It says:In all three, the Conservatives now hold narrow leads; in all three, the Liberal Democrats are close behind. The paper goes on to explain that those polls reveal a similar pattern in all three seats Most Labour and Lib Dem supporters are prepared to vote tactically if their preferred party is out of the running.Labour supporters are willing to switch to the Lib Dems in overwhelming numbers - in all three seats by enough to give the Lib Dems victory.Lib Dem supporters ...

Three constituency polls commissioned by The Observer are out, all in heavily Remain areas and all showing a massive growth in Liberal Democrat support. In all three cases, it looks too that tactical voting by erstwhile Labour supporters may well be key to the result. How much do they want to defeat the Conservatives in those constituencies? Finchley and Golders Green This is the seat being fought by Luciana Berger, which has already been polled once for this campaign. The new poll shows: Finchley & Golders Green constituency voting intention: CON: 46% (-1) LDEM: 32% (+25) LAB: 19% (-25) via ...

Apologies for being a little late with this polling news, but polling carried out by BMG for the Electoral Reform Society last month is still rather relevant: The polling found that nearly a quarter (24%) of voters' plan to use their vote tactically - turning to a party or candidate to keep out someone they dislike more. Based on 2017 general election turnout, this would equate to almost 7.8 million votes. Around two thirds (66%) say they'll vote for their first preference regardless of how likely they are to win, and 10% say they don't know. When the same question ...

I can already feel it: I will regret writing this article. Partly because I was so wrong last time, being sure right up until the reveal of the exit poll that the Tories had won a huge majority. I'll also regret it partly because making any sort of prediction on how this election is going to turn out is madness. The information we are getting from the polls and on the ground is difficult to graft onto how many seats each party will get, and that's before we factor in any large, late swings of the kind we saw last ...

Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson will plant a tree in Hampstead today (Saturday 16 November), as the party announces ambitious proposals to undertake the largest tree-planting programme in UK history. A Liberal Democrat government will plant 60 million trees every year, increasing UK forest cover by 1 million hectares by 2045.Just 13% of the UK is currently covered by woodland, far below the European Union average of 35%. The Conservatives have woefully failed to meet their own targets for planting trees in the past year. Only 1,420 hectares of trees were planted in England in the year to March 2019, ...

Aberavon and Neath Liberal Democrats president Ron McConville traces the history of the Green movement in Britain. In 1975 the Ecology Group was started. Not many months later, 1977 saw the formation of the Liberal Ecology Group. (Only in 1985 did Ecology become the Green Party.) Ron adds: "For the following decades we saw the constant jibes of Labour and Tory whenever our MPs spoke on environmental issues. Year after year we saw Press banging on about those sandaled, bearded Liberals. Constantly our activists were derided, quite often again on ecological issues." He presses the leadership: "how can we convince ...

Christmas advert of the year has to be from the World Wildlife Fund, if only because of its terrifying message that if we are to save the planet. We have to act now. It is a complete contrast to the consumerist messages of the likes of Marks and Spencer's and John Lewis.

Lib Dem Health Spokesperson Luciana Berger has spoken out about how Brexit would harm our NHS, emphasising how reliant we are on EU doctors and nurses. Analysis done by the Labour Party highlights that NHS staff work a million hours of unpaid overtime every week. That doesn't surprise me. When my husband was seriously ill three years ago, in the 51 nights he was in hospital, only once did I see one member of staff actually leave at the end of their shift. And the situation has got much worse since then as we lose thousands of EU nurses every ...

It's election season again. Like bad storms, elections seem to come more frequently than in the past. In the early hours of 12 December two years ago I wrote: "It's been a bitterly cold night with temperatures expected to plummet to as low as -12C by 8am. All schools in the area remain closed. Roads and pavements are often hazardous. Buses will try to serve as many areas as they can..." That's why I am urging everyone to get a postal vote for this election. All elections are important. We need to vote. I can't predict the weather for election ...
