It's a toss up between Jo Swinson and arriving at a visit in Auchtermuchty and Willie Rennie and Alex Cole-Hamilton being, well, themselves. Yesterday, Jo visited North East Fife The typo in this, from a Courier reporter, is very amusing, but I just loved the exuberance of it. The baby is Daphne Grint, 5 month old daughter of Scottish Lib Dem environment spokesperson Rebecca Bell. Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson has arrived at the Auchtermuchty base of Crafty Maltsters to deliver her message to Scottish voters with local MSP Willie Ronnie. pic.twitter.com/bsvZQMqSSJ — Cheryl Peebles (@C_CPeebles) November 8, 2019 The ...

It was only last Sunday that I sent Lord Bonkers' latest diary off to Liberator HQ in London. On Friday the printed magazine arrived. Which means that I can offer you what may fairly be described as topical satire. Monday This is usually a quiet time of year in Rutland. There is nothing to hear but the chatter of hamwees massing on the telegraph wires before they fly south for the winter (or are they wheways returning from the Arctic?), the swish swish of Meadowcroft's broom as he sweeps up the fallen leaves and his grumbling when he has to ...

9 November 1989

On the 9th of November, 30 years ago, I had done my usual daily shift for BBC World Service at Bush House and had settled down to watch the TV news at home when the first extraordinary images came through of people climbing onto the Berlin Wall and passing through it. For those too young [...]

The Times has a valedictory interview with Ken Clarke behind its paywall today. He says things that will please Liberal Democrats: "I like Jo [Swinson], she's very nice and very bright ... The Conservative Party is more right wing and the Labour Party is more left wing than at any time in my lifetime so for the Lib Dems ... this is the opportunity of a lifetime."But I was taken by his dismissal of David Cameron: "He had the style and presentational skills, but he could never answer the question - what does he believe in? What is he doing ...

Confronted By Jenrick

Thanks to everyone who came out campaigning for us in Newark today. It is clear there is a very different mood to that in previous elections, which much more support at the stall than ever before. People who were there at about midday were treated to a strange sight when I was confronted by Robert Jenrick about an article in the tabloid newspaper that we were giving out. He seemed to be in a very bad temper and was unhappy about the fact that we had told people about his voting record on climate change. Well, his voting record is ...

By happy coincidence, soon after the publication of a very promising opinion poll result for the Liberal Democrats in Dominic Raab's constituency I was off there.

Clearly the first priority for the Lib Dems at this General Election is to fight to stay in the EU. Our second priority is to fight climate change. In fact, the two priorities are inexorably linked. One of our key ... Continue reading →

Tom Jones won the Oscar for Best Picture of 1963, and picked up another three: Best Director (Tony Richardson), Best Substantially Original Score (John Addison) and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium (John Osborne). Five of the actors got nominations, which I think may be a record (I haven't been counting) - Albert Finney in the title role for Best Actor, Hugh Griffith as Squire Western for Best Supporting Actor, and three (which is definitely a record) for Best Supporting Actress - Edith Evans as Miss Western, Diane Cilento as Molly Seagrim, and Joyce Redman as Mrs. ...

Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor Ed Davey has warned the Tories and Labour are "writing promises on cheques that will bounce" following speeches by Sajid Javid and John McDonnell today. He said: "Any form of Brexit, whether red or blue, will make Britain's economy weaker and people poorer. It means much less tax revenue for the Treasury. "Neither Labour or the Tories can square their spending promises today with the cost of Brexit. They are writing promises on cheques that will bounce. "In contrast, every vote for the Liberal Democrats is a vote to stop Brexit, build a brighter future and ...

Responding to news that the Bank of England has revised down the UK's growth prospects, Ed Davey, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor said:"The Conservatives have been desperate to hide how economically damaging their Brexit deal would be, but this Bank of England report spills the beans. "Boris Johnson's Brexit would mean lower growth, less investment and less tax revenue to the Treasury. It is yet more proof that Boris Johnson puts party interest ahead of national interest and is happy to make us all worse off."A Liberal Democrat government will stop Brexit and boost growth, generating a £50 billion Remain Bonus. ...

Responding to Boris Johnson's comments that the significant flooding across the UK is not a national emergency, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Communities and Local Government and the Northern Powerhouse Tim Farron said:"For Boris Johnson to say that he does not consider this a national emergency is insulting to those in the midst of a crisis."This shows he doesn't care about families across the North of England and the Midlands, many of whom are in urgent need of rehousing, have lost their businesses and whose mental health is being impacted. "There is a human cost to the Prime Minister's self-interested drive ...

Earlier this week leading Brexiteer and still a cabinet minister Jacob Rees Mogg gave it has his opinion that the residents of the Grenfell Tower Block who obeyed the Fire Service's instructions to stay in their apartments during the fire, "lacked common sense." This has caused outrage and it is understood the Tory campaign managers hope to keep Mr Rees Mogg out of the limelight for the rest of the election period. The following information is culled from a letter from a Sasha Simic published in the Guardian on7th November. When he was Prime Minister David Cameron promised to abolish ...

I've spent the last two days being less than warm towards the Taxpayers' Alliance, but even where I doubt the sincerity of their aims in the generality, the data they produce is nonetheless in that it tells you much about the voters you are trying to convince. And yes, whether or not you can come up with a persuasive argument to reflect their wishes, or if you even want to, you still need to understand their motivation. So, here are some of my personal highlights... Reducing the basic rate of corporation tax from 19% to 12.5%, the same level as ...

I'll Take Poo Too!

Dog owners are being reminded of the negative health impacts caused by failing to clean up after their four-legged friends. Cllr David Monk and Cllr Tim Prater of Folkestone & Hythe District Council (F&HDC) joined forces to reinforce the message by applying "I'll take poo too!" stickers on normal bins along The Leas in Folkestone earlier today (November 7). Dog poo contains high levels of harmful nitrates which can reduce the quality of our bathing water and harm local marine life. 30 years ago today, the Berlin Wall was breached. It was the beginning of the end of Soviet domination of eastern Europe. Socialism collapsed under the weight of it own unfairness, corruption, anti-liberalism, repression and inefficiency. Let's hope we never have to go back to any of that. Though some dream otherwise. Yesterday's Wales on Line reports that journalists finally tracked down former Secretary of State for Wales, Alun Cairns while canvassing in his constituency. Now, those doorstep encounters are a series of conversations I would like to listen in on. Are constituents challenging their Tory candidate on what he knew and when he knew it, regarding the role of his friend and employee in the collapse of a rape trial? Are they asking him if he lied when he said he didn't know anything about the circumstances of this collapse until last week, despite an e-mail suggesting otherwise? To what extent ...

The Liberal Democrats will today (09/11/19) announce bold plans to introduce free childcare from 9 months, transforming the lives of parents and children across the UK. Today's high cost of childcare means that too many parents are unable to return to work without risking real financial hardship. With the average cost of 25 hours nursery care for a child under two running to more than £6500 per year, many parents are effectively excluded from work due to the burden of childcare costs. A Liberal Democrat government will build a fairer economy by providing free, high-quality childcare for every child aged ...

Of all the voting systems, first past the post in single-member constituencies particularly incentivises tactical voting. That can be for positive reasons - such as a voter really wants to elect a candidate who will prioritise environmental polices - or for negative reasons - such as to try to defeat a party the voter really dislikes. Either way, it's up to the voter to decide what matters most to them and to act accordingly. Of course, political campaigns can legitimately try to influence each stage of that - including how best to turn your views into an effective vote. Which ...

Lib Dems respond to NEU schools league table A new NEU league table reveals that Boris Johnson's funding plans will see 83% of schools receiving less money per pupil in April 2020, in real terms, than they received in 2015. Responding to the report, Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary for Education Layla Moran said: These figures reveal how the Conservatives are failing the next generation. Schools are already struggling to cope with catastrophic budget cuts, with headteachers having to ask parents for donations for basic resources like paper and textbooks. This chronic underfunding is only set to get worse, denying children ...
