I'm hosting this open letter on behalf of Lib Dem parliamentary candidates who want to highlight our party policy of piloting an unconditional minimum income as part of the social security system. Too often, folk don't hear about progressive Lib Dem policies beyond stopping Brexit, and I'm very happy to be helping spread the word [...]

Christine Jardine was on Sophy Ridge this morning talking (among other things) about how Brexit was sucking the life out of everyone meaning that we couldn't concentrate on the huge issues of the day like Brexit and the NHS. Brexit is "sucking the life out of everything in this country", according to Liberal Democrat Home Affairs spokesperson @cajardineMP She says Brexit trumps every other issue in politics.#Ridge pic.twitter.com/rTIpC36Cjx — Sophy Ridge on Sunday (@RidgeOnSunday) November 10, 2019 * Caron Lindsay is Editor of Liberal Democrat Voice and blogs at Caron's Musings

Remembrance Parades

There were four Remembrance parades and services in the Whickham area today. The largest was in Whickham village itself (see my colleagues above). Meanwhile Cllr Peter Maughan laid a wreath at Dunston, Cllr Sonya Hawkins at Swalwell and Cllr Marilynn Ord at Marley Hill (see photos below). The bottom link takes you to the full set of photos we took today.

Second paragraph of third chapter:He slumped back in his chair, yawning. His eyes began to glaze over at the thought of the steaming cup of sweet, dark tea that was waiting for him at the neon-lit doughnut shop in Penn Station; of the other regulars who occasionally dropped by to sit around the plastic-topped table—the Sudanese bankteller, the well-dressed Guyanese woman who worked in a Chelsea used-clothes store, the young Bangladeshi man from the subway newsstand. Often they just sat in companionable silence around a circular plastic-topped table at the back of the shop, sipping tea or coffee out of ...

Freeman's Meadow Lock, which is right next to a weir, is still a remarkable spot. I took lots more photos there today and will share them with you another time.So I wrote back in August having failed to recreate a shot from a 1967 issue of the Inland Waterways Association's Bulletin. That time has come as I start to share my photos from my travels during that August holiday.

A local newspaper says Rutland and Melton Conservatives have selected a counterterrorism expert as their candidate to succeed Sir Alan Duncan. You can see why. Tuesday When Jo 'Gloria' Swanson tipped me the wink that we would be parading newly converted Conservative MPs to the Liberal Democrat Conference, I naturally decided to join the fun. I hired a van from Oakham's leading Chinese laundry and bade a brace of gamekeepers join me; we motored up to Town and lay in wait outside the Carlton Club. In the middle of the afternoon a red-faced character sporting an Eton tie stumbled down ...

Tactical Voting Sites

There are three purported tactical voting sites that I know off, all claiming to try and maximise the anti-Tory vote. If we had a fair voting system sites like this would not be needed. However we don't so they are. Unfortunately the quality of the sites is very different. Best for Britain, a campaigning organisation opposed to Brexit, have compiled the Getvoting.org site. This uses the most complex calculations, looking not just at the results in the last election but also opinion polls, trends and by election results. They were able to predict the result of the Peterborough by election ...

Issue 398 of Liberator will soon be on its way to subscribers and the free sample articles for this issue Liberalism After Brexit, by Bernard Greaves, and Another Capitalism is Possible, by Paul Hindley, are available here. And for those facing the rigours of a winter general election, here is the front cover illustration. Other articles in this issue are: Answering To A Higher Authority – Tim Farron chose to join a notably hardline Christian group, and then wondered why his views were wildly incompatible with being Lib Dem leader. Despite the general election, our conference timetables have to proceed as normal. So this week, registration for Spring Conference in York opened. You will definitely want to be there. Even when our party was out its lowest ebb, Conference is still the best fun you will ever have in your life. And it's in York, which is a gorgeous city. And the food and beer at the Mason's Arms, just down the road from the Conference Centre is delicious. You can register here. But I have a question for the Federal Conference Committee. If you register now, you get your ...

The Scottish Liberal Democrats launched their campaign in Cramond on Thursday mornings. The bright umbrellas provided a contrast to damp grey surroundings. Alistair Carmichael and former Leader Lord Campbell of Pittenweem joined Willie Rennie, North East Fife candidate Wendy Chamberlain and many activists. Willie Rennie told the assembled crowd: This election our ambition is sky high. We can stop Brexit and build a brighter future for Scotland in the United Kingdom. Scottish Liberal Democrats are the only party standing up for Scotland's place in the UK and the UK's place in the EU. The country needs Liberal Democrats to stand ...

I know this song from Fairport Convention, but this version is by the Harbour Folk Band. They turn out to be the house band of The Irishman, a pub in Stavanger, Norway. Close to the Wind was written by Stuart Marson and the story it tells is based in fact. The Culworth village website tells the story of the Culworth Gang: Writing in 1841, Alfred Beasley sets the scene for what [John] Smith's move to the village would bring: "In the lovely undulating countryside of the southwest corner of Northamptonshire, seven miles from Banbury, lies the quiet village of Culworth. ...

On Friday, the Liberal Democrat general election manifesto was finalised. In a special piece for this blog, Federal Policy Committee Vice Chair Jeremy Hargreaves explains what happened: On Friday night, I chaired the Federal Policy Committee's meeting to make the final decisions about our party's manifesto for this general election. It was a marathon seven-hour session for the FPC, where we went through the whole document again, line by line. We had a total of 604 individual suggested amendments in front of us and discussed many specific proposals, from precise tax changes, to foreign affairs issues and details of how ...

Today the Liberal Democrats announce that the party will waive the exorbitant "leave to remain" application fees for members of the Armed Forces who were born outside of the UK. The fees cost a family of four almost £10k. In recent years the fees for these applications have been increased to exorbitant levels: they now stand at £2,389 per person, despite the unit cost to the Home Office of processing an application being just £243. This means that the cost of applying for a family of four is £9,556. These excessive fees have prevented many brave veterans from taking up ...

Charles Homer Bosworth was my great grandfather. In his face, I can see my Dad, my Uncle Bob, my Uncle Peter. My Dad was called after him. Known as Homer, he lived in Codford in Wiltshire. Born in 1888, he served in the First World War and gets a mention in the Codford Roll of Honour: Charles Homer Bosworth served in the British Army during World War 1 and spent time in Russia as part of his service. Until last year, that was as much as my sister and I and our cousins knew about his first World War Service. ...

And this time it is an inquiry into the Prime Minister himself. The Guardian reports that the scandal over Boris Johnson's friendship with technology entrepreneur Jennifer Arcuri has reignited when it emerged that the independent police watchdog has delayed its announcement on whether the PM should face an investigation into possible criminal misconduct until after the election. The paper adds that the decision prompted fury from Westminster politicians and London assembly members who said it appeared that a ruling had been "suppressed" in order to protect Johnson from potentially damaging headlines at a crucial stage of the election campaign: In ...

When I was canvassing some flats in Guildford, I knocked on one such door, or so I thought. 'Excuse me, can I help you?' came the thin, elderly lady's voice.
