Following his support for the Liberal Democrats in the European Parliament elections, former Conservative Deputy Prime Minister is now urging people to vote Lib Dem or independent at the general election: The former deputy prime minister said Mr Johnson was selling voters a "grand delusion" that he could deliver Brexit by the end of January... Appearing at a panel event alongside expelled Tories Dominic Grieve, Anne Milton and David Gauke, the peer urged lifelong Conservative voters to abandon the party at the ballot box. Asked what advice he would give to Tory voters, Lord Heseltine said: "I'm telling them to ...

On 25th November 1959, Charles Kennedy was born. He was raised near Fort William and went on to be elected as the SDP MP for Ross, Cromarty and Skye when he was just 23 in 1983. He went on to become the second leader of the Liberal Democrats and was one of the most popular politicians in the UK. His easy-going public persona and his immense political courage won him many friends across and outside politics. He was a passionate internationalist and European and totally committed to social justice. He talked about being a voice for the dispossessed who were ...

Liberal Democrat Shadow Foreign Secretary Chuka Umunna gave a speech today in Watford setting out the party's policy on foreign affairs, including spending £1 billion more on defence by 2024/25 than under Conservative plans due to the economic boost from staying in the EU. He underlined the party's commitment to NATO, but asserted that the organisation must adapt to today's threats.

Lib Dems: Dishonest to promise more nurses under Boris Johnson Human Rights Act on the line in this election Farage takes credit for the terrible Tory manifesto Lib Dems: Dishonest to promise more nurses under Boris Johnson Responding to the Conservative Party manifesto commitment to 50,000 more nurses, Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary for Health, Wellbeing and Social Care Luciana Berger said: It is dishonest to promise there will be more nurses under Boris Johnson's Conservatives. Our NHS has been consistently hit by the Conservatives' NHS and social care cuts, putting the lives of loved ones right across the country at ...

The UK's former Ambassador to the EU Ivan Rogers has given a speech today criticising Boris Johnson's "diplomatic amateurism" and warning the UK is headed for a no-deal Brexit in 2020. Responding, Liberal Democrat Shadow Brexit Secretary Tom Brake said: "Boris Johnson's promise to get Brexit done has been exposed as the sham it is. His plan would either lead to a catastrophic no deal in 2020 or years more chaos and damaging uncertainty. "We can still prevent an economically ruinous Brexit that would damage opportunities for future generations. This election is a chance to deprive Boris Johnson of a ...

This post first appeared on the Radix UK website..."There is no Country in Europe, which produces, and exports so great a Quantity of Beef, Butter, Tallow, Hydes and Wool, as Ireland does, and yet our common People are very poorly cloath'd, go bare-legged half the Year, and rarely taste of that Flesh-Meat with which we so much abound. We pinch our selves in every Article of Life, and export more than we can well spare, with no other Effect or Advantage, than to enable our Gentlemen and Ladies to live more luxuriously abroad."I found these words, about the economic effects ...

Transport is essential to our modern lives. We need a modal shift from polluting cars to public transport. We must spend 10 per cent of the nation's transport budget on walking and cycling. Ticketing must be simpler and prices lower. People in rural and coastal areas will have access to well-funded transport. A Clean Air Act and new watchdog will ensure the air in our towns and cities is clean. Bus services will be expanded. The rail network will be upgraded and decarbonised. High Speed 2, Northern Powerhouse Rail, East West Rail and Crossrail 2 will be supported. Expansion of ...

So, the third series of Blake's 7 was originally broadcast from January to March 1980, when we were living abroad; but luckily eight of the episodes were repeated in June and July 1981, and I definitely remember watching three of them and probably saw several others. It was a welcome distraction, as I will explain later. (See also the first series, the first half of the second series, the second half of the second series.) 3.1 Aftermath, by Terry Nation, directed by Vere Lorrimer This is one of the three episodes I definitely remember seeing in 1981. Which was a ...

On Referendum Night in 2016 I did a tour of the polling stations in Eccleshill Ward to get a late indication of turnout. I had done virtually nothing in the campaign since I had recently started a sabbatical from active party politics. It was our turn to have the Lord Mayor and the Council Group decided it should be me. However I felt that I could offer the campaign this small contribution because I would not be talking to voters. What I saw at all the polling stations gave me a shock. I returned to the Lib Dem office and ...

The polls look dire for anyone but the Conservative party. Labour are floundering, as they were always going to, and the Lib Dems have been effectively squeezed. The latter has come about due to a combination of the fact that both the Tories and Labour have an interest in seeing the Lib Dems crushed, the Tories in order to win, Labour in order to destroy any nascent centrist uprising, and the fact that the Lib Dems have not run a good campaign, at least at national level. The Lib Dems are so fearsome of attacking Boris Johnson's Brexit deal in ...

The Tories have never been a great fan of human rights, so it is no surprise to read in the Independent that they are being accused of attempting to water down the Human Rights Act after announcing vague plans to "update" the legislation in their election manifesto. The paper says that the 59-page blueprint, launched by Boris Johnson on Sunday, contains a promise to "update the Human Rights Act and administrative law to ensure that there is a proper balance between the rights of individuals, our vital national security and effective government: The pledge comes after the prime minister vowed ...
