For my younger readers, the original song comes from the 1968 film The Thomas Crown Affair and was song there by Noel Harrison.

Anthony Watchorn, who was standing as an independent candidate in Rutland and Melton at next month's general election, died this morning. When I heard the news I thought it would mean that polling would be postponed in that constituency, as happened in Thirsk and Malton in 2010 when the Ukip candidate dies during the campaign. But the Leicester Mercury quotes a spokeswoman for Melton Borough Council as saying: "We have been advised of the death of Mr Watchorn, who was standing as an Independent Candidate for the Rutland and Melton Constituency. In such circumstances, and in line with Representation of ...

Leaked documents from the US-UK trade deal talks reveal that US negotiators offered PR advice to their UK counterparts on how to sell the controversial practice of chlorine-washing chickens to UK consumers and the British media. The document show that in November 2017 the US team agreed to share their "public lines" on chlorine-washed chicken to help "inform the media narrative".The leaked documents also show that US negotiators had 'the most angst' about EU limits to the use of chemicals in food production, trying to persuade the UK to change seek a clean break from EU rules that protect UK consumers ...

The BBC has the article on it's website – see link below:- www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-essex-50544243 I don't know about you readers but this 'stunt' and to me it looks to be little more than a politically motivated stunt is very worrying. It's the job of the police to uphold the law of the land not for individual officers to have other issues that they want to deal with.

Second paragraph of third story ("Nule"): 'What are they for?' said Libby one morning, after roving round the house and pushing all the buttons in turn. At that moment Martin pushed the button in the front room and the indicator slid up to Parlour, vibrating there while the bell rang. And rang and rang. I was moved to search this out by a memory of hearing one of the stories, "Who's A Pretty Boy Then?", a chilling tale of haunted budgerigars, on Radio 4 one morning in 1982. It's a collection of nine short stories for older kids (mostly set ...

It is a true maxim that cheats never prosper. Boris Johnson and the Tory Party have lied and cheated, and in the short term it has won them the keys to 10 Downing Street. It may even win them an election. But in the long term it spells ruin for all of us. Here's why. Brexit is toxic to even steady growth in the economy. Economic growth rests on three things: optimism, stability and trust. People need optimism to believe that they will get something back from the work or cash that they put into any investment. People need stability ...

The Liberal Democrats have criticised the Conservative government following today's Supreme Court judgment, which found that five asylum seekers had been unlawfully detained. The Liberal Democrats are committed to making immigration detention an absolute last resort. The judgment concerns five asylum seekers, each detained for more than a month in 2015. One was detained for 16 weeks, from 18 August to 8 December. The Supreme Court unanimously ruled that they were wrongfully detained, and that they are entitled to compensation. The Liberal Democrat manifesto commits to making immigration detention an absolute last resort, introducing a 28-day time limit on detention ...

Yesterday, the Liberal Democrats will set out a raft of policies as part of a radical plan to end the UK's addiction to plastic. These policies include: Requiring all retailers to reduce the amount of plastics and non-recyclable packaging they use Implementing a deposit return scheme Ending plastic exports abroad by 2030 Following this announcement, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Energy and Climate Change, Wera Hobhouse said: The UK produces 2.26 million tonnes of plastic packaging every year, but less than half of this is being recycled. The Conservatives have claimed they will cut plastic pollution but all they have done ...

Corbyn Annihilation

As Theresa May had her turning point in 2017 when her campaign came off the rails over social care, so I witnessed yesterday the most comprehensive annihilation of a political leader ever when Jeremy Corbyn was interviewed by Andrew Neil. It has to be a major impact on his credibility amongst those watching directly or even just viewing clips or reading press reports. My mind had been changing over the last week or two on my tactical voting plans, and that interview was the final straw. I will be voting Lib Dem after all and nothing right now could convince ...

Following the launch of a campaign against the use of false allegations, campaigners have been protesting across the country from Liverpool, to Newcastle, from Shrewsbury to Brighton about the Labour Party's lack of concern about the use of false allegations by senior Labour Party officials. John Hemming said, "The vast majority of people are opposed to the promotion of false allegations.

Jonathan Fryer (right) with Hakima El Haité, President of Liberal International Four of us UK Liberal Democrats were given a brief break from general election campaigning these past few days with a meeting of the Executive Committee of Liberal International (LI) in the Moroccan city of Fez. LI now has a Moroccan President, a former Minister of the Environment, Hakima El Haité, and its Secretary General, Gordon Mackay, was previously a South African MP. So although the organisation's HQ is still located in the bowels of the National Liberal Club in London, the days when LI was a Eurocentric organisation ...

There are endless theories about why the 2017 general election, which had been assumed throughout to be heading for a large Tory majority, ended in a hung parliament. The main factors that are usually cited are: the Tories' bad campaign, in particular May's poor performance; Remain voters gathering behind Labour in order to try and halt Brexit; people being sick of the Tories after seven years and wanting something new. There is one factor that doesn't get discussed enough, in my opinion: Jeremy Corbyn's performance in that general election campaign. I have never been a fan of Corbyn. I expected ...

We were shown photos of problematic parts of the 1953 constructed building and pieces of concrete which came off it during a very recent investigation into its condition. The Parish Council is supportive of the decision of the Governors to close the school building pending a more detailed inspection of it as clearly the safety of the children, teachers and anyone using the building has to be ...

It isn't only figures from national politics who are switching to back the Liberal Democrats. Plenty others are switching too, of whom the latest is Stephen Willoughby, a councillor in Derby: A senior Derby city councillor has quit the Conservative Party to join the Liberal Democrats. Stephen Willoughby said he can no longer support the party as it had become "unrecognisable" from the one he supported more than 20 years ago. The Derwent ward councillor was first elected in 2007... Lib Dem council group leader, Ruth Skelton, welcomed Mr Willoughby to the party council group. She said: "Steve is one ...

In 2017 we proposed spending more than the Labour Party on reversing some of the benefit cuts since 2010. This year the Institute for Fiscal Studies after looking at both of our manifestos concluded, that while we both increase benefit spending "to around its 2010 level ... this money doesn't go as far as it used to, because of underlying pressures pushing up benefits spending, including rising housing costs and a bigger population. Taking these into account, these pledges would only reverse around a quarter of discretionary cuts to benefits since 2010." According to the Labour Party's costings they plan ...

With Jeremy Corbyn being skewered by Andrew Neil on the BBC for failing to apologise over his party's abysmal record on anti-Semitism, attention naturally turned to the Conservative Party and their difficulties with Islamophobia. Unfortunately, senior Tory politicians are as much in denial on this issue as Corbyn is on his. The Guardian reports that the Tory Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sajid Javid has refused seven times to condemn Boris Johnson's use of the terms "bank robber" and "letterbox" to describe Muslim women who wear a burqa. Johnson has refused to apologise for writing in a Telegraph column last year ...

Lib Dems to give gig workers 20% increase to minimum wage and greater protections A Liberal Democrats Government would increase the minimum wage by 20 per cent for zero-hour contract employees and introduce a raft of policies to create a working environment that protects employees. The new, higher minimum wage for those on zero-hours contracts will seek to compensate workers for the uncertainty of fluctuating incomes. As part of their plan for the future of work, the Liberal Democrats will also promise to establish a new 'dependent contractor' employment status for workers tied to one employer, which enshrines rights such ...
