Disappointed to find that the bookshops in Nottingham's Mansfield Road had gone, I blogged about it as soon as I got home. A little further down the hill, I was taken with what looked as though it had once been the entrance to the city's Bluecoat School and is now the YMCA International Community Centre. I had the feeling that the entrance used to be wider and, sure enough, when I bought a book of old photos of the city later that afternoon I found this little ghost.

"Those of us who are left of centre in rural areas are often completely missed from political discourse, despite our long history of distinctive political belief." Oliver Craven on the Liberal Democrat pitch to the rural left. Comfort of a sort from Richard Heller, who argues that if Boris Johnson wins on Thursday Brexit won't get done and he will soon be the most unpopular leader in British history. "All this explains why Tory support depends so much upon the legacy vote from older people and upon the populist slogan, 'Get Brexit Done'. Their historic client base has shrunk. Sure, ...

Being of the left but an opponent of Labour I thought I'd have a look at the leaflets they've put out in the Sefton Central Constituency. The striking thing is that in the ones I've seen there's virtually no mention of Jeremy Corbyn or indeed Brexit. When political parties all but ignore their own leaders in leaflets you can bet that they're thinking that mentioning them will be a negative influence on voters. And I should know my party had Nick Clegg as its leader some years ago! So we can read into this that Jeremy Corbyn is not felt ...

Change.org has published a People Power Index measuring how responsive MPs were to their constituents during the 2017-19 session. The rankings put Daniel Kawczynski, who was MP for Shrewsbury & Atcham, close to the bottom. Mark Pritchard, who represented the Wrekin, is even worse. Philip Dunne, Ludlow, is more than halfway down the rankings though very close to the mediocre average for the Tories. Lucy Allen in Telford scores highest for Shropshire's five MPs during. Looking at the parties standing in Shropshire, the Lib Dems top the People Power Index for responsiveness (though beaten by Caroline Lucas, the sole Green ...

If you have ever disappeared down the JFK assassination rabbit hold, or simply seen Oliver Stone's film, you will know all about the New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison. It was he who brought an unsuccessful prosecution against the New Orleans businessman Clay Shaw for conspiracy to assassinate President Kennedy. In 1973 Garrison was defeated in the election for district attorney by Harry Connick, who was to hold the post for the next 30 years. As Wikipedia explains, Connick intervened in the aftermath of the prosecution of Shaw: In 1995, while District Attorney, Connick promised to the Assassination Records Review ...

My Fair Lady won the Oscar for Best Picture of 1964, and picked up another seven: Best Director (George Cukor), Best Actor (Rex Harrison as Higgins), Best Cinematography (Harry Stradling), Best Sound, Best Adaptation or Treatment Score (André Previn), Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design (Cecil Beaton). Stanley Holloway and Gladys Cooper were nominated in supporting roles as the protagonists' parents (Eliza's father and Higgins' mother), beaten by Peter Ustinov in Topkapi and Lila Kedrova in Zorba the Greek respectively. The other Best Picture nominees were Becket and Zorba the Greek, which I have not seen, and Dr. Strangelove ...

It started with my daughter taking an interest in Fulham Football Club. This happened after some players from Fulham had come to her school. Given Craven Cottage is located miles away from her school in south London, I thought this was somewhat peculiar, but I had no reason to think she was making it up. And even if she was, I was now being presented with a chance to go to a football match for the first time in a decade. The last time I had attended a match live was in 2009. It was England v Belarus in a ...

Research by the environmental charity, Hubbub suggests that Britons' love of novelty Christmas jumpers is helping to fuel the world's plastic pollution crisis. The Guardian reports that Hubbub has shown that because most new sweaters contain plastic, the garment has become one of the worst examples of fast fashion, now recognised as hugely damaging to the environment. Its analysis of 108 garments on sale this year from 11 high street and online retailers - including Primark, George at Asda and Topshop/Topman - found that 95% of the jumpers were made wholly or partly of plastic materials. Twelve million jumpers are ...

There's just five campaigning days left in the General Election. All of a sudden you seem to go from "Oh yikes, how the hell will I survive 5 weeks of this?" to "Oh Yikes, there's only five days to do all this?" What matters to us all on Friday morning is the number of Lib Dem MPs we have. Noble third places count for nothing. If you are not in one of the seats we hope to win on Thursday, please either get to your nearest one, or make phone calls from your own home into it. The party has ...
