via GIPHY Bat shit crazy. Getting up in the dark to deliver "Good Mornings" for two hours before dawn. This task was leavened by a vague blob in the darkness besides the A4. He was a blob of anoraks, waterproof trousers and ski hats at 7am in front of me as he approached a 4*4 which had arrived to collect him for work: You must have covered a lot of ground – said the A4 blob. I uttered the usual remarks with which I greet "not another bloody leaflet" complaints: Sorry. It will all be over tomorrow etc etc – ...

Looking back at the election, and a vague prediction of the results and what comes next.

10pm, 12 December. It's all over bar the counting. It was an election where we heard of plonkers. Joshing. Post stratification. An election where blocks of ice made more a contribution to the climate emergency debate than most politicians. There were false facts. False fact checkers. Tony Blair unbelievably accused parties of peddling fantasies. We didn't see much of Jacob Rees Mogg. Lifelong Tories recommended voting against the Conservatives. This article is not about political parties and policies. It's about political antics. Things that have caught my attention. No doubt you have your own anecdotes and experiences to share! This ...

Lest we forget.

I was born in 1937, have taken a serious interest in all the general elections of my adult life, and fought as a Liberal Liberal Democrat candidate in four of them. I write this on the 2019 election day and before the results begin to emerge. Whatever they are, whilst no election campaign has quite reached the level of honesty and nobility that my Boy Scout upbringing would require, this has been the nastiest, dirtiest most dishonest and ignoble yet. It beggars belief that, after 70+ years of universal secondary education ++ our society, our civilisation, our aspirations, could have ...

We are struggling to save trees. Our record in Ludlow is appalling. Trees have been lost with abandon on the conservation area. More than 100 decent trees are to be felled on Foldgate Lane. Hedges have been netted ahead of being cleared. We are denuding our landscape. We need to turn this around. We are in a climate emergency. We face a biodiversity crisis. We must plant at least ten trees for every one we fell. Let's plant a huge forest. First, we need to get the political and bureaucratic support. That's why Lib Dems and Greens have tabled a ...

Voting for Vicky

I am just back from Sunniside Club where I voted in the general election. Vicky Anderson was the recipient of my vote. That's hardly surprising! For anyone in Blaydon constituency who has not yet voted, get out and do so! Voting is crucial to the health of our democracy, so get out and vote, regardless of who you support. But, of course, I prefer you to vote Lib Dem!

OLD JACK raked the cinders together with a piece of cardboard and spread them judiciously over the whitening dome of coals. When the dome was thinly covered his face lapsed into darkness but, as he set himself to fan the fire again, his crouching shadow ascended the opposite wall and his face slowly reemerged into light. It was an old man's face, very bony and hairy. The moist blue eyes blinked at the fire and the moist mouth fell open at times, munching once or twice mechanically when it closed. When the cinders had caught he laid the piece of ...

The Guardian reports on the anxiety felt by many European citizens, living and working in the UK at the implications for their future if a majority Tory Government is elected tonight, which takes us out of the EU. Most EU nationals living in the UK cannot vote. leaving them feeling helpless as the rest of us decide their fate in the ballot box. It is worth reading the article in full, but here is an extract: Up and down this country, from Bradford to Bristol and Manchester to west London, EU nationals are eyeing an election that they could be ...
