So, the absence from frontline politics lasted less than a fortnight before I found myself a new project, that of my own dear Local Party. In fairness, I had made a promise to take over as Secretary, as our previous Secretary had served six years in the role and was keen to hand it on. Admittedly, she and I had made it a personal bargain, so much so that, at Thursday's AGM, it required drawing the attention of the Chair to the fact that it wasn't simply a case of re-electing the incumbent. And so, I have a new job. ...

Here Tony Robinson celebrates the long glory years of Time Team. Note the mention for W.G. Hoskins and his The Making of the English Landscape.

Next Saturday is the first meeting of the new Liberal Democrat Federal Board (FB), which will see a mix of old and new faces either around the table or joining via video conference. It'll also be my first outing chairing the Board, so with a bit of luck, we'll have finished by Monday lunchtime... Watch out for my report on the party website which will follow a few days after, but as lots of people have been asking, it's worth noting in advance some of the key points we'll have on the agenda. Timetable for the party leadership election Before ...

Second paragraph of third story ("Save Yourself", by Terrance Dicks):The Doctor felt tired, as if he'd been waiting here a lifetime.I loved this. It's a collection of Doctor Who short stories, edited by Steve Cole with contributions from Joy Wilkinson, Simon Guerrier, the much-missed Terrance Dicks, Matthew Sweet, Susie Day, Matthew "Adric" Waterhouse, Colin "Sixth Doctor" Baker, Mike Tucker, Cole himself, George Mann, Una McCormack, Jacqueline Rayner, Beverly Sanford and Vinay Patel. It's a bit invidious to single out individual stories, but I will anyway: Terrance Dicks last controibution to the Whoniverse expands the concept of Series 6B, with the ...

Tim Walker writes about David Cameron's memoirs in his Mandrake diary column for The New European: Booksellers tell me that there appear to be no immediate plans to publish For the Record in paperback. When I inquire, the former PM's factotum Laurence Mann confirms no publication date has been set. And who would want to read the paperback if they did read it? The mess Britain finds it in is down to Cameron's strange mixture of cowardice and overconfidence. As Tim writes: Cameron appears to have withdrawn in terror to his garden shed and has not seen fit to emit ...

BBC Manchester profiled Jane Weaver back in 2008: Forget Jane Birkin, Nico and Julie Driscoll, singer-songwriter Jane Weaver is a unique and talented vocalist with her own distinctive style and her own dazzling collection of songs. Born in the same hospital as John Lennon, she had a strict catholic upbringing. Luckily for us, fate intervened and Weaver became seduced by the sight and sounds of Kate Bush bellowing Wuthering Heights on TOTP. "It was like a visitation" she recalls fondly. "She had this other worldly quality that was very emotive and very fairytale like. I immediately wanted to become a ...

The Independent reports that people are being illegally blocked from getting jobs and renting homes in the UK due to lengthy delays in the Home Office's EU settlement scheme. Lawyers claim that spouses of Europeans are waiting months for their applications for settled status after Brexit to be decided on, despite the government saying the process should take one to four days - often leaving them with no formal documentation to prove their status. The paper quotes one case, in which an Iranian woman married to a Swedish man said she had been driven to a state of permanent anxiety ...

I worked in the computer industry for my career. I count myself lucky that I survived in a job that long. But you have to be careful in industry. I should imagine if a business manager spread a budget of £20 million over five times the area it should have been spread, with the result of modest failure rather than modest success, then she/he would be consigned to a dusty office with "special projects" written on the door for the rest of their career. If a manager presided over a reduction in revenue of 80%, they would probably lose their ...

Welcome to my series of tips and advice for Liberal Democrat members, which appeared first in the email bulletin run by London Region for party members. Whether it's for sending out with a tweet or putting in a leaflet, taking a photo on your smartphone of a team of Liberal Democrats out campaigning is now a common part of campaigning. Here is one very easy way to make those photos look much better, both of which hinge on the same point – we want people to think that that the Lib Dems are a nice, successful bunch of people, not ...

Sign on Green Lane Maghull adjacent to canal swing bridge. A Maghull in Bloom planter can just be seen behind it. I saw this sign and wondered what the long closure was all about. The Canal and River Trust website gives the answer and the link below refers:- The odd thing is that the C&RT says the bridge will be closed for longer i.e. until 13th March? This longer period could just be for canal boats though? I've run this past Sefton's Highway Engineers for clarification and will update when I know more. Barge at Green Lane (Methodist Turn ...

Recently, the traffic safety bollards in the middle of Riverside Drive, just north of the Botanic Garden, were damaged - apparently struck by a vehicle - see photo : I reported this, at the request of residents, to the City Council and am grateful for the prompt response to put a temporary arrangement in place. The council has further advised : "Tayside Contracts (is) ... going to replace them within the next month with new highly reflective bollards, but they're back up for now."
