From the Bucks Free Press: The former home of famous writer and philosopher G K Chesterton could be bulldozed and replaced with flats - in a move branded "shameful" by angry Beaconsfield residents. Gilbert Keith Chesterton, best known for the Father Brown detective novels, moved to Beaconsfield with his wife Frances in 1909 and lived in Grove Road until his death in 1937 - first at Over Roads and then across the road at Top Meadow. Now, Over Roads, to which fans of the prolific writer flock every year, could be knocked down and replaced with nine apartments. The National Catholic ...

Lisa had seen corpses before. A few times in the pathologist's lab, a few times in a traffic accident to which she had been sent as a trainee. To get the taste and the smell, ...

The winter issue of the Journal of Liberal History has just been published. Its contents include: 'Gambling on Brexit: the Liberal Democrat performance in the 2019 general election' by Professor John Curtice, who has written election analyses for the Journal consistently since 2001. It won't surprise readers of Lib Dem Voice that he concludes that the party's decision to back an early general election was a gamble that failed spectacularly, and that the party's campaign itself 'proved ineffective at communicating to voters anything much beyond the party's stance on Brexit. The party's domestic policy programme was not so much unpopular ...

The Guardian reports that flagship BBC news shows including Newsnight, The World At One and Radio 4's Today are to be subjected to the same cuts that have led to plans to axe Victoria Derbyshire's BBC2 show, as part pf a drive to save about £40m in the corporation's news division: It is understood the efficiencies being planned include Newsnight being asked to make fewer films. The late night BBC Two show is renowned for its agenda-setting coverage, last year broadcasting Emily Maitlis' exclusive interview with Prince Andrew. BBC Radio will be expected to share resources and material across its ...

I've been a railway enthusiast ever since my Grandad on my Mother's side took me to watch trains in Kirkby-In-Ashfield Nottinghamshire as a toddler. Unsurprisingly, I watch most railway programmes that come on the TV but every now and again I have to go back and watch my favourite one from the original 1980 BBC series of Great Railway Journeys. It's called Coast to Coast and is in my view a masterpiece with my all time TV presenter Ludovic Kennedy at the helm throughout the 1 hour programme. I've blogged about it before and here's a link back to that ...

DUNDEE CITY COUNCIL - WEEKLY ROAD REPORT REPORT FOR WEST END WARD - SATURDAY 25 AND SUNDAY 26 JANUARY 2020 Blackness Road (at Peddie Street) - temporary traffic lights on Sunday 26 January for Scottish Water work. REPORT FOR WEST END WARD - WEEK COMMENCING MONDAY 27 JANUARY 2020 West Marketgait at Police Station - off peak lane closures in both directions on Monday 27 January for street lighting lantern replacement works.

It can be so frustrating working with Shropshire Council. Next Wednesday, a scrutiny committee will consider the one year review of the controversial parking strategy introduced in November 2018. This led to a huge hike in on-street hourly rates in the town centre and restrictions on residents permits. That cut town centre trade at a challenging times for all town centres. But although that meeting is only two working days away, the council has yet to publish any paperwork. How are we expected to consider and react to a major policy paper that could have a huge impact on the ...
