At Five Leaves Bookshop in Nottingham a year or two ago, I bought a copy of Curious King's Cross, which they had published themselves. Curious London quotes a review of it from the International Times: Recently a friend gave a me a copy of Curious King's Cross by the broadcaster and social-cultural historian Andrew Whitehead. I immediately wondered if Bob Dylan's gig at the KX pub The Pindar of Wakefield in 1962 was mentioned and blow me down here's a chapter, Don't think twice, which does exactly that. I was at that gig - the only time I've seen BD ...

Temeside and Lower Corve Street are flooded. Other areas also. The water has rushed in through doors, flooded basements and pushed sewerage out of toilets. It is not yet known how many houses are flooded but it must be around 20. Water is lapping at the doors and back gates of many other properties. This is almost the worst flood since July 2007. Then water reached a height of 5.22m on the Teme. Today, the river seems to have peaked at 5.20m. But no one threatened with river water pouring into their home cares about whether this is a record ...

Welcome to Cllr Lisa Smart (on the right in the photo), freshly elected as the new chair of the Federal Communications and Elections Committee (FCEC). She's written a piece for the party website introducing herself and her priorities: Last week I received a call at home. I'd been fighting for a blue disabled parking badge for a local man with a hidden disability. He'd filled in all the forms, the reply came back, "Sorry, computer says no..." He'd complained, the reply still came back, "Sorry the computer still says no." Then something that happens up and down our country happened ...

This post first appeared on the Radix blog... Here are the three most egregious versions of tickbox that I have run across in the last few days... First, the government's proposals to reform the early years foundation stage, which the Early Years Alliance warns is risking turning it into "a series of bullet points ... a narrow tickbox approach." Second, the unmissable NHS blogger Roy Lilley used a similar word to attack the CQC, the doyennes of tickbox in the health sector: "The Confed, Providers, NAPC, the Shalfords, the Mulberries, unions, the think-tanks should find the guts to say what ...

Responding to reports that the Conservative Cabinet has agreed to implement a new points-based immigration system on 1 January next year, Liberal Democrat Home Affairs spokesperson Christine Jardine said:"These Conservative plans to impose an entirely new immigration system in less than 11 months, without any proper consultation, are a recipe for disaster."There simply isn't enough time for employers or the Home Office to prepare for the mountain of extra bureaucracy. It will be chaos."And when Boris Johnson talks about ending 'low-skilled' immigration, he is really saying there will be fewer people to build our homes, care for our elderly, farm ...

A short while ago the Federal Board announced that Dorothy Thornhill would be leading the Review of the recent General Election. Dorothy was the first directly elected Mayor of Watford, a post she held for 16 years until 2018. Since 2015 she has served as a Lib Dem peer in the House of Lords. Dorothy has now announced the members of her Review team, and a wonderfully diverse bunch they are: Carole Ford I joined in 2015 and since then have stood as a council, Scottish parliament and GE candidate. I am the Scottish spokesperson on Children and Young People, ...

The Mountain Goats are an American band based in North Carolina, whose only permanent member is their singer and songwriter John Darnielle. Pale Green Things comes from their 2005 album The Sunset Tree, which deals with Darnielle's childhood and in particular his relationship with his abusive stepfather. The song deals with the stepfather's death and the memory of an occasion when things were alright between them. I came across it on Twitter where someone compared it to the fishing scene near the end of Responsible Child. Though whether that scene is a memory or the boy's attempt to imagine a ...

An impressive panel of 15 people is investigating the lessons from the general and European elections for the Liberal Democrats. They are a mix of people with extensive experience of election campaigning in the UK (but not involved in the decision-making last year), a colleague from a sister liberal party outside the UK and people with relevant expertise from outside the Lib Dems on how organisations should be run and decisions made, such as the former CEO of a German multi-national. I've previously covered the appointment of Dorothy Thornhill to head up the independent review into the general and European ...

More suppressed reports?

I have already blogged on the strange case of the report into Russian interference in the UK political system, which was suppressed before the General Election, presumably in case it damaged Tory election hopes and still has not been published. Now the Independent reports on further reports being suppressed by the UK Government. This particular reports are also potentially damaging as they are studies believed to show little gain from trade deals with US and Asia. The paper says that these analyses were completed as long ago as 2017 and looked into the probable impact on growth from agreements long ...

Nothing has emerged since the start of the referendum campaign to suggest that Brexit promises anything more than serious harm — to the British economy, British culture and Britain's standing in the world. That didn't change at 2300 on 31 January. But the way forward is more complicated than switching from #RevokeArticle50 to #RejoinEU — and not just because the process for rejoining is not so simple. Polling suggests that a majority have been opposed to Brexit for some time. Some of those will be relieved that the indecision is over, but many will not have changed their minds. But ...

There's every danger that we progressives i.e. Libs, Greens and much of the Labour Party will continue to fall into the trap for the next 5 to 10 years of calling out our awful Tory Government for well, being Tories and doing what Tories do. What we have to accept though is that because we could not put forward a credible progressive alternative to the Tories (and because our warped electoral system helped the Tories to win as usual) we invited the electorate to say to themselves 'the Tories may be bad but they're not as bad as the alternative/s'! ...

It takes place at the library on Tuesday at 3pm. The show, commissioned by the Friends of Wighton, is inspired by the 19th century manuscript book of Christina Gib of Maulesden House, Brechin.
