A propos of nothing, here are the opening titles of the 1970s BBC series Survivors. It dealt with the struggle to rebuild some form of civilisation after a virus has wiped out 99 per cent of the world's population. Read all about the series on Survivors: A World Away.

Rowntree Halt, York

Rowntree Halt, which served workers at the company's York chocolate factory, stood on the otherwise freight-only Foss Islands Branch. This line left the York to Scarborough line to serve industrial sites in the Foss Islands quarter of the city. It also linked with the Derwent Valley Railway. A film on the BFI's Britain on Film site shows a train calling at Rowntree Halt not long before it and the branch closed in 1988, before presenting some vintage photographs of both.

Layla Moran has announced she is running to be the next leader of the Liberal Democrats. On her website Layla said: It's time for our Party to move forwards and build a positive vision for our future. I want to fight to ensure education and equality of opportunity. To properly tackle the climate crisis, and to better engage in cooperative, progressive politics. I'm listening to members and voters, and I want to work with them to build a vision for the future of our party and country. With your support, I can lead this change. I'm standing to be Leader ...

Second paragraph of third chapter:The electronic frisker on the door swallowed his I.D. card and returned it instantaneously. Then the security guards waved him through with their N-series, and after two minutes on the travelator he was there. Most employees of the daily paper were away for May Day, but some of those working on the Sunday were around. One of the advantages of having been sacked, he mused, was that he now knew precisely who were his real friends on the paper. And, more importantly, his real enemies.Right-wing historian Andrew Roberts wrote this in 1995, foreseeing a referendum twenty ...

In any longer term competitive activity it is useful to distinguish between strategy and tactics. This as true of politics as it is of anything else. It is surprising how few British political activists grasp the difference. The current usage of the two words derives from the development of military theory in the 19th Century. ... Thank you for the lovely feedback so many people have for my emails about the Liberal Democrats, polling and politics: "It's the only way I know what's happening in the Liberal Democrats." "Full of interest, well written and well presented. Many thanks!" In total, I sent 2.27 million emails in the last year (up by nearly a third, or 32% to be precise). Not all just to you, thank goodness. The wider political situation is a reminder to us all just how important it is to have a growing, active and powerful liberal voice in this country. Informing and involving ...

Most of the punks you saw about weren't punks but middle-class kids dressed up as punks. Real punks had an air of danger and nylon pullovers with burns from one-bar electric fires. The Ramones' Sheena is a Punk Rocker from 1977 was not a punk record but a record about punk. So I doubted their authenticity too. But that seems churlish now all four of the band's original members are dead - you can't get more committed than that. So here is their first single release from the year before.

I have blogged a number of times, most recently here, on the absurd immigration system and the proposed changes to the rules that are going to cause huge problems for the UK economy. Now the Independent has reinforced that view by reporting on claims by the GMB that new immigration rules being brought in by home secretary Priti Patel could result in a "black hole" of almost half a million care home workers: Branding Ms Patel's plan as "slapdash", the GMB warned that cutting off the supply of recruits from overseas will worsen the crisis in the adult social care ...

Over 22,000 (yes, twenty-two thousand) submissions have already been made to the party's independent review into the general and European elections. But that's not stopping the review team, headed up by Dorothy Thornhill, from wanting to hear more... One opportunity to do that in person is at the party's spring conference in York, from 10:10am on Saturday 14 March in the main conference hall. But don't worry if you can't make it to the party conference. You can also send your views by email to Dorothy and the team on thornhilld@parliament.uk. They can be both personal views or those on ...

The whole section of the A432 from the bend at the eastern end of Old Sodbury up to the Cross Hands lights is going to be closed from 16 March - 4 April each evening from 8pm until 6am. There will be a lot of noise. There will be diversions, but best to steer well clear!

Bad parking has long been an issue in the market area. When there is not a market on Market Square, cars squeeze between the stalls to avoid paying parking charges. They litter Events Square much of the time and create an ugly setting for the castle. Post Office Square, which is the bit between the market stalls and Harp Lane, is notorious for penalty tickets being slapped on parked vehicles. A scheme from Shropshire Council that aimed to end this was rejected by Ludlow Town Council. Now Councillors Ginger and Pote have come back with a completely different scheme. They ...
