It's high time we had another walk with John Rogers. He describes it on YouTube like this:A walk through the lost Hamlet of Snaresbrook on the edge of Epping Forest, now a part of the parish of Wanstead in the London Borough of Redbridge. We cross Leyton Flats to the Eagle Pond and look at the Eagle Pub. Here we see a section of the Sayers Brook or Sayes Brook that gives Snaresbrook its name. We also see Snaresbrook Crown Court which was built in 1841 as the Infant Orphan Asylum. From here we walk along Woodford Road to look ...

Letters and ladders

Today I took a break from staring at a computer screen to deal with some casework issues that can't be done online. I had some letters to post and sites to visit. My time was spent peering over hoardings and fences, including at one house climbing a ladder to try to determine whose boundary a [...]

I used to run a second blog called Serendib, which I jotted down striking passages from books I was reading. Maybe I didn't read enough books, because the blog did not last. But if I were still running it I would have added this passage from Conan Doyle's story The Adventure of the Speckled Band."Do you know, Watson," said he, "that it is one of the curses of a mind with a turn like mine that I must look at everything with reference to my own special subject. You look at these scattered houses, and you are impressed by their ...

A photo of this sculpture hangs in my study Alan Turing was born on 23rd June 1912. I wasn't aware that I shared a birthday with one of my heroes until the 1990s, long after his untimely death. In fact, the world knew very little about him until government papers were released in the 1970s under the 30 year rule. And yet he is now going to be memorialised on the next £50 note. Actually I did become aware of some of his work at University, because I read his seminal pre-War paper "On Computable Numbers, with an Application to ...

In a previous article, I started to highlight policy areas that could advance our fight against the climate emergency and looked at legislation and taxation. This article continues the discussion and looks at additional policy measures to drive change in the way we treat the world we live on. 3. Education – all schools should have climate crises as a part of their social learning – this can be written into the personal, social education time which schools use to address and educate on issues. For adults, continued government promotion on single-use plastics, diets and other life choices is essential, ...

Yes, my time as an obscure political quiz question answer is drawing to a close, as this latest press release from the party indicates: Nominations for the next leader of the Liberal Democrats have opened today, the party has confirmed. Candidates must be an MP and be proposed by at least 10% of other members of the Parliamentary Party in the House of Commons. They must also be supported by at least 200 individual members from 20 local parties. In order to vote in the contest, you must be a Party member at the close of nominations on the 9th ...

The fight against climate change is a global one; we understand the issue and science. We also understand the urgency, and in the Paris Agreement, every country committed to reducing emissions to target a significantly lower than a two-degree rise over pre-industrial temperatures. While the complexities are significant, the issue is that globally we continue to put too many greenhouse gases into our atmosphere. The wealthy western countries have been the leaders of this pollution which are making the entire planet suffer, and the poorer countries are suffering more than the wealthiest; we need to lead the recovery. The good ...

Following the Thornhill Report, I propose that a good way to formulate remedies for the many problems identified is to draw parallels between how we apply our principles to UK reform, and how we apply such principles in running our party. The party has always supported decentralisation, holding that decisions should be taken at a level as close to those affected as practically feasible (a COVID-19 lesson!). By contrast, the Report explains that the party had succumbed to the temptations of increasing centralised control; applying top-down decisions hidden behind the bureaucratic fog. In contrast to principles of openness and transparency, ...

The Liberal Democrats are calling on the Government to back a new Bill to scrap suspicion-less stop and search in the wake of the Black Lives Matter protests, which have exposed ingrained institutional racism and discrimination in the UK. Given the disproportionate impact of current Stop and Search laws on black people in particular, and BAME communities more widely, the Liberal Democrats will today (Wednesday 24 June) introduce a Bill to outlaw suspicion-less Stop and Search, highlighting that the current law "undermines" community trust in police. The Party is demanding the Government back their proposal. If passed, the law would ...

Move Forward Together

In the aftermath of this crisis, our country has an opportunity to change. Watch video here And we must change. Going back to normal means continuing to damage our planet. It means entrenching educational inequalities before a child even steps foot in a classroom. Treating people differently because of the colour of their skin, and prioritising GDP over wellbeing. Change is in the air; no matter where you go, you can feel it. Communities are coming together to help those in need. More and more young people making their voices heard on climate change. And when you turn on the ...

Too many political leaders would let us sleepwalk into a global catastrophe. Boris Johnson and Donald Trump have never cared about the climate emergency. They will trash world agreements in favour of pursuing their dangerous ideologies and serve only those with vested interests in oil and coal. But despite this, I'm an optimist. I've taken on Conservatives in government before – and won for our environment. As Secretary of State for Climate Change I oversaw the near quadrupling of Britain's renewable energy, I smashed the monopoly of the 'Big 6' companies on the energy market, and I saw the creation ...

Commonsense prevailed in the House of Commons yesterday when MPs voted down controversial proposals introduced by the leader of the House of Commons, Jacob Rees-Mogg, that would have allowed them to debate complaints about serious bullying and harassment. As the Guardian reports, an open letter sent by past and present parliamentary staff, union leaders, MPs and women's groups had accused Rees-Mogg of undermining a new independent system designed to prevent bullying and sexual harassment in parliament, by allowing MPs to debate serious sanctions made by a new independent expert panel (IEP). But this was foiled when an amendment tabled by ...

The salient finding of Dorothy Thornhill's excellent report on the 2019 election is that Liberal Democrats lacked an overarching vision and purpose. Her report finds that "Feedback at all levels of the party ... described a lack of clarity in what we stood for and what we would do in power, beyond stopping Brexit. There is still a fundamental belief, indeed passion, for the sentiment expressed in the preamble to the constitution, but this has not been turned into a vision and strategy which guides the whole organisation." The current emergency opens a chance to develop a vision that can ...

Highways England have now opened the public consultation on its proposals to significantly increase the motorway as it passes between Prestwich and Whitefield. The plans include making the Motorway between junctions 17 and 18 (Prestwich to Simister) 10 lanes (5 running lanes in each direction, with no hard shoulder) and two different options for increasing the capacity of the Simister Island junction: A flyover and loop to the north of the M62A second roundabout inside the existing structure. It could cost up to £340m, depending on which option was chosen, and work could start by 2024 with it opening in ...

Patients in Bury are now able to make online visits to their GP and receive advice and support virtually as more practices roll out new technology. The new digital technology allows patients to request help from their GP practice by completing a short form online, which will then be assessed by a practice clinician to offer the right care, including a telephone or video appointment, or referral to other services or self-care. Currently 77% of people in Bury are now able to access online consultations, with more practices set to rollout the technology to support their patients soon. Dr Sanjay ...
