The BBC has the article on its website – see link below:- www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53942542 Well now, apart from thinking at first this seems more like Russian socialist tractor factory 'advice' i.e. do it or else, my more sober reaction was why are the Tories saying get back to your offices? Sage advice I was given in politics and indeed life many moons ago was to understand how to react to a situation you need to know, as far as possible, why what you are reacting to is being said in the first place. So let's look at the possible motivations:- * ...

Embed from Getty ImagesPopulism, all right-thinking people agree, is a Bad Thing. Yet in the far-off days when I was a Liberal activist and then councillor, there was a definite populist strand to our campaigning. We were the people who stood up for the unfashionable end of town. We were the people who stood up for the voters against council ruling groups and senior officers. I remember doing a survey on council house repairs here in Harborough and being told the next day that the council offices were thronged with people we had encouraged to make complaints. I was proud ...

[IMG: Council Housing] On Thursday, I asked F&HDC Cabinet Member for Housing David Godfrey and his Housing Team to clarify the current position on Fire Risk Assessments in Folkestone & Hythe District Council's blocks of flats, and how the the remedial work that those inspecitions have flagged up, are going. In an email update this evening, Councillors have been told: "East Kent Housing currently manages the Fire Risk Assessment process (FRAs) in respect of the 180 blocks of flats for Folkestone & Hythe District Council. The assessments are carried out by a qualified fire risk assessor and undertaken at between ...

Mark Pack reports back

Party President, Mark Pack, has issued another report back to members. This time he focuses on the reports that are being presented to the online Autumn Conference at the end of September. You can read the Conference reports pack here. This year, as a result of a review by the Federal Board on the working of our party's central committees, there are more reports than usual to Conference. They give an interesting insight into the inner workings of the Liberal Democrats, with contributions, as usual, from the Federal Committees and parliamentary groups, plus a financial review and statements from the ...

[IMG: Council Housing] Following the decision of Folkestone and Hythe District Council (and the other three partner Councils) to close East Kent Housing and return to direct control of their own housing stock, work has been progressing fast. The Council will be taking back direct control from 1 October, and in the run-up and ongoing has started publishing a stakeholders bulletin with progress. The August briefing note was emailed out to Councillors, Staff and the Tenant and Leaseholder Board today. They will / are being publshed on the District Council website soon, but for those who just can't wait for ...

Fear is the major political currency of America's Republican Party. The traditionalists are frightened of socialism. They are scared of big government. They dread the thought of a diminished suburban life style. They are panic-stricken at the thought of losing their guns that protect from the forces of both the law and lawlessness. But most of all, in an increasingly racially divided society, the long dominant White population is terrified of becoming a minority. Republicans will deny that they are racists. But the fact is that race issues have been a dominant theme in American politics from the arrival of ...

The Lib Dems have been in the doldrums. But make no mistake, their Party matters to the future of progressive politics in the UK a lot. First because 'liberalism' matters. Against populism and statism, the place of the individual and more broadly a healthy civil society, based around robust human rights, are essential to any progressive politics. And second because Labour cannot win on its own. Ed Davey has rejected equidistance and working with the Tories. It's game on. But to play properly together means getting over the past. When Compass, the organisation I'm Director of, opened out from being ...

According to the Independent, a large group of UK residents could become "guinea pigs in a digital-only experiment". They say that EU citizens have launched a campaign for the government to give them physical proof of their right to remain in Britain after Brexit - amid fears that they could be locked out of homes, jobs and healthcare by technical problems. Apparently, the Brexit settlement scheme's "digital-only" design is already causing problems for EU nationals, some of whom are already being held up in airports and facing delays in moving house. But campaigners worry that the scheme's flaws could have ...

The former Liberal Democrat MP who led the campaign to secure a pardon for Alan Turing and other men convicted of historical gay sex offences has written to the Big Five technology corporations calling on them to help save the threatened Bletchley Park codebreaking museum. John Leech, who was MP for Manchester Withingon between 2005 and 2015, told the i newspaper: "The likes of Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, and Google would not exist without Turing's work. For a very long time, he was completely forgotten, but you can't overestimate how important Alan Turing was... the impact he's had on modern-day ...

Keep KitKat Fairtrade!

Nestle has announced that KitKats will no longer be Fairtrade. From October it will stop buying from cocoa and sugar farmers in Cote d'Ivoire, Fiji and Malawi on Fairtrade terms. That means taking away around £2 million of annual Fairtrade Premium payments, in the middle of a huge health and economic crisis. Farmers will be getting less for their hard work and have less control over how they spend their money. As a member of Dundee Fairtrade Forum, I strongly believe this cannot be right, especially when Nestle turned a profit of over $10 billion last year. Please sign the ...

There's a nice story in the Melton Times about Melton Mowbray people taking to the town's River Eye: With limited boating activities available at nearby Rutland Water, Melton Mowbray Town Estate is keen to encourage more people to take boats out on the Eye. Town bailiff, Billy Boulding, said: "The river encompasses a large proportion of our parks. "Boating enthusiasts can row or canoe the 1.5km loop around Egerton and Wilton Park, and enjoy the beautiful scenery the river provides. "It has been underused over recent years but wouldn't it be nice to see these family and community activities on ...
