Going out of sequence for my next Hugo-winning film write-up; this was on TV the other day and I caught most of it, and then went back to watch the beginning on Netflix. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade won the Best Dramatic Presentation Hugo in 1990; the other finalists were, in order, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, Batman, and Field of Dreams, which I have seen, and The Abyss, which I haven't. I am pretty clear for myself that Batman is the best of these, but IMDB users are closer to Hugo voters than to me, rating ...Last Crusade ...

Welcome to the UK at the end of a terrible 2020. Like everywhere else on earth we're battling against Covid 19, but we're also very troubled with our own self-destructive need to shoot ourselves in both feet. For years our politicians and our press have found ways to blame foreigners, the EU, the French indeed pretty much anyone outside of the UK for our own self-made troubles. The whole sorry mess has culminated in what looks to be a wretched Brexit Deal which is bound to be one of the greatest acts of self-harm this country has imposed on itself ...

Mekere Moraoutam who was Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea (PNG) from 1999 to 2002, died a few days before Christmas. He was born in what I take to be the remote village of Kukipi in Eastern Kerema.PMG, was educated a the village primary school and local high school, then Sogeri National High School, Lae Polytechnic and the University of PNG. He tidied economics and before his political career, served as Governor of the Bank of PMG, the Central Bank. I'd like to be able to say that taught him but I didn't. In 2006 whilst still an MP but ...

The Silk Road Revisited

The Silk Road has long captured the imagination of Western armchair travellers: a network of trails across Asia from China, bringing silk, spices and other exotic goods to the European market. Few, if any, merchants ever travelled the whole length of the journey; trade was instead carried out between middle-men at numerous points along the [...]

More comedy genius from Tripp and Tyler, showing that it's not only the Liberal Democrats who love a bit of jargon.

The Liberal Democrats have declared that the Conservatives' deal is "threadbare" and "bad for jobs, business, security, and our environment" and warned it is the only 'free' trade deal in history to "put up barriers to trade". The Party has also said people are "desperate to move forward" and to see the country "united again" but Boris Johnson's deal makes that more difficult with potential trade disputes for decades to come. Leader of the Liberal Democrats Ed Davey said: "Boris Johnson promised to make people better off, but his deal will make us all poorer. "This deal is threadbare, bad ...

There are a lot of issues with Boris Johnson's Brexit deal, many of which have not even been aired yet as people work through its 1200 pages, but what is obvious so far is that red tape for businesses will increase, the so-called 'hard-won gains' will prove largely illusory, the service sector in particular will suffer from being overlooked, we will be less secure as a country, people's ability to travel in Europe will be curtailed, fisheries have been sold down the river, the deal is nowhere near as good as we have now, and some key European programmes will ...

Happy Boxing Day!

(with thanks to Dundee Volunteer and Voluntary Action for the image and photographs!)

Simon was well known in our town. He died on 25 November aged 61 years. Thanks to the generosity of St Laurence's Church and Victoria Allen, and financial support from Shropshire Council, Simon's funeral was graceful and moving. Wild Edric filmed the service and the video is here. It is well worth listening to Tom Elwin beautiful singing of Panis Angelicus at 30 minutes in. The eulogy was read by Catherine Beaumont on behalf of Simon's friend since schooldays, Floyd Moody. It is reproduced below. Tom Elwin sings Panis Angelicus (Image: Wild Edric.) In remembrance of Simon Mark Lissauer born ...
