The Scottish Liberal Democrats backed the SNP Government's budget today. The minority administration needs the support of opposition parties to get its budget through. Leader Willie Rennie negotiated with SNP Finance Secretary Kate Forbes and, as you would expect, asked for more money for mental health, education, local government, environment, training and business support. He also asked for assurances that specialist eye treatments would be available in Lothian. The full list of the Lib Dem gains in the budget are: An extra £120million for mental health services to pay for new services in communities. An extra £60million to help education ...

How I hate the British fascination with royalty. I will not watch That Interview. But the Royal family is a critical link in my country's constitution and we can't ignore it entirely, much as we might want to. Both sides in this spat are making the case for the family's release from its constitutional role; ... Continue reading The Royal Family is a factory of human misery

Second paragraph of third chapter:It was Saturday night, and the girls were getting ready to go out. They were meeting up with David and some other guys at Romans to see a band.I'm always interested to read books by my twins, people who like me were born on 26 April 1967 (see also Warren Read and Trish Doller). This one is frankly not as good as the other two, but it is closer to my personal experience, being the story of a confused Catholic student's sexual experiences at university; not terribly erotic, funny in places, you can see from quite ...

In the small print of the UK budget we find that the Chancellor of the Exchequer (the British Finance Minister) has allocated a further 15 billion Pounds to the funding for the UK track and trace system. This means that the cost of the UK´s track and trace system is now 37 billion Pounds. That is approximately €43 billion or US$51 billion, which is to say that it is amount of money greater than the national GDP of over 110 countries, or if you prefer, it is roughly the same number as the combined GDP of the 34 smallest economies ...

Local elections 2021, Thursday, 6th May The UK has now left the EU, however did you know that: You can still vote in the local elections as a European citizen? Your vote hugely matters? You can continue shaping the future of the local communities? Yes, it is exactly two months until the next elections. Although some European countries, including Poland, signed a bilateral agreement with the UK, which enables us to continue voting and standing in the local elections, our future political participation is far from certain. This process simply can't be taken for granted and our voices must continue ...

Parking will be free from 8am to 6pm in all Shropshire Council car parks from 12 to 25 April 2021, to provide the county's town centre traders with a welcome boost once non-essential shops and personal care providers reopen, and pubs and restaurants are able to serve customers outdoors. Shropshire Council hops that the free parking will encourage people to visit local businesses once the current lockdown measures are eased in line with the government's roadmap. If the reopening date for non-essential shops is delayed beyond 12 April, which doesn't look likely at this point, the dates of the offer ...

I'm in the midst of preparing for my forthcoming webinar: 'What's it Like to be Disabled in Britain in 2021?' with speakers Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, Michelle Daley and Dan White. And I have learned so much. – Especially from members of the public who've sent in descriptions of their experiences to me*. Emma shared with me that being disabled in Britain for her is being anxious about an appointment she's been to numerous times before, but never knowing if she's going to be able to park safely. Or, even if she can park safely, being able to get out of ...

Residents will recall that last month I posted an update from the City Council about the Sinderins Beacon public art project, the final part of the "Dundee Decides" participatory budgeting consultation back in 2018. The other parts of the project that was supported by residents back in 2018 were other public art projects - the "Perth Road" seating at the Miller's Wynd car park and the Eurobins artwork project - had been long-delivered. The "Sinderins Beacon", the proposal for an entrance structure at the west end of the shopping area at Sinderins, has taken an age to progress and I ...

Yesterday was International Women's Day, so it is rather disturbing to see this article in the Independent, which reports on a new study that found nearly n 10 women say they would not become a politician because of fears of facing abuse or harassment in the role. I reported yesterday on one example of misogyny and abuse in Neath Port Talbot, so it is no surprise to see this research conducted by the Fawcett Society, a leading gender equality charity, finding almost six in 10 women think sexism in local politics is a barrier to pursuing a political career: Seven ...
