Jago Hazzard traces the course and history of this short branch, which closed in 1959. Despite his choice of thumbnail, I'm not convinced that the Railway Children went anywhere near this line.

It's common, perhaps, to look to the future and get a sense that things are getting worse. How many cliches do we have for that slippery slope? They weren't like that in my day, it's a dangerous road, it's all going to hell in a hand cart, the end is nigh! But when it comes to global trade and global power, our fears are being validated. Dominic Raab, the UK's Foreign Secretary, was recently recorded as saying, "If we restrict [our trade deals] to countries with [decent] standards of human rights, we're not going to do many trade deals with ...

This Saturday we ask the question that many of us have heard, whether it's the opposition to our social values or people who feel forgotten by the party after our 2005 heights – "What IS the point of the LibDems?" – at the Radical Association's first fringe. It is vital that we have a frank discussion about the party- what it has been and achieved in the past, and how best it can be a vehicle for change and improving people's lives in the future. (Radical association co-chair Natasha Chapman) We encourage all to query, despite how basic it may ...

August 2010 books

You can now read online or download an updated version of the Conference Agenda. For the first time this includes all the amendments to motions, and they have been inserted after each relevant motion. The original page numbering of the motions has been cleverly maintained by giving the inserted pages numbers like 16B. That means we can all refer to the motions without confusion, no matter which version we have to hand. The updated version of the Agenda is only available online and not in print. You can also read or download the latest version of the Conference Directory, which ...

Stakeboarding to win!

The farmers and the affluent retirees of this part of Cumbria have returned a Tory MP as long as anyone can remember. Indeed a Tory MP seems as much a part of the natural order here as Wordsworth, lambs, lakes and Beatrix Potter. The crop of lurid orange Lib Dem signs in the farmer's fields, however suggests that the political climate is changing. "Lib Dems winning here!" the posters declare. (The Times 22 April 2005.) And so we did and the stakeboarding campaign was a major element in that success. In 2005 we had 644 sites and by 2010 when ...

Having decided that they are going to legislate to restrict the right to protest, introduce prison sentences for defacing statues greater than those available for somebody convicted of rape, and bring in US-style voter suppression to help them win elections, the UK Tory government took a further step towards a Hungarian-type popularist dictatorship yesterday when they signalled that they are considering plans to send asylum seekers who arrive in the UK overseas to be processed, an idea modelled on a controversial Australian system. The Guardian reports that Priti Patel, the home secretary, is expected to publish details next week of ...

Late last year I was asked by the Federal Policy Committee to chair a working group on regional powers in England within a Federal UK. The group was charged with developing policy on powers for the level between local government and the Federal government, taking into account the broader vision set out in conference motion "The Creation of a Federal United Kingdom" (passed at Autumn Conference in 2020). The group was asked to build on existing policy as set out in policy paper 117 Power to the People (2014) and policy paper 130 Power for People and Communities (2018) and ...

As The Independent reports, there's good news on Lib Dem peer Kath Pinnock's continuing campaign over unsafe cladding: Peers have inflicted another embarrassing defeat on Boris Johnson's government over financial protection for households affected by dangerous cladding of the kind blamed for the Grenfell Tower tragedy. The House of Lords voted by 326 to 248 to prevent the bill for remedial work, like the removal of unsafe cladding from blocks of flats, being passed to leaseholders and tenants. Instead, they want the government to stump up the cash and then recoup it from developers, construction firms and cladding manufacturers. Liberal ...

Local elections will take place on 6 May 2021, seven weeks from today. All Shropshire Council unitary seats will be up for grabs as well as all the seats in town and parish councils. There will also be an election for the Police and Crime Commissioner. Elections are important. It is a time for you to make your views known. To lobby existing councillors and to stand yourself on a ticket that reflects your beliefs. Shropshire Council feels and looks old. A lot of councillors will retire in May allowing new councillors with new ideas to join the council. Ludlow ...
