Having called for Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick's resignation last night, Ed Davey and London mayoral candidate Luisa Porritt have written to both the Home Secretary Priti Patel and London Mayor Sadiq Khan to remind them of their accountability for last night's events, too. Dick, Khan and Patel have been showcasing their best buck-passing all day, but the truth is that they all have responsibility for the horrific events of last night. Ed and Luisa have reminded them of that in no uncertain terms. Here are their letters: Dear Home Secretary, I am writing to ask you to clarify what ...

Following the launch of The Alliance Of Her on 8 March, a new research report published by the ALDE Party in collaboration with the European Liberal Forum and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation highlights the experiences of European liberal women in politics. In Europe, women's political representation has increased significantly in the last decade. Currently, the region accounts for the highest number of women in elected office worldwide. However, while some progress has been made, achieving gender equality seems to be going forward at a snail's pace. Men continue to outnumber women in elected positions and those measures which perhaps have ...

The Dolmen of Duisburg

Having done my epic tour of western Belgian megaliths, I realised that I didn't have any photos of the one closest to us, so took U on an expedition to photograph it this afternoon. In the grand park behind the Africa Museum in Tervuren, three stones, now referred to as a "dolmen" (although they do not even touch each other, let alone form a structure) were placed at the intersection of seven woodland paths. They are large but not obviously structured, suitable for smaller people than U to clamber on. Having been moved from the nearby village of Duisburg (not ...

Some four and half years ago I wrote to Liberal Democrat Voice about the abuse of the honours system. I wanted Tim Farron to take a moral lead, abjure hierarchical honours and not nominate anyone for more than a BEM. My article The political honours system is sick, possibly fatally was published and drew a little interest but quickly dropped off the radar. The time has come to revive the issue. Earlier this week the Times published a report that civil servants are actually coaching companies like Serco on the most effective way to obtain honours such as MBEs for ...

Priti Patel's Policing Bill, being introduced to parliament tomorrow, includes a power to lock people up for ten years if they engage in a protest that might "seriously annoy" people. Two summers back I protested against the unlawful shutting down of parliament. I imagine that seriously annoyed Boris Johnson, especially when the Supreme Court unanimously ruled against him. Every Extinction Rebellion protest seriously annoys the powers that be and the fossil fuel companies. Every Black Lives Matter protest seriously annoys the racists in our community. It seems that last nights vigil by women in London against women being harassed and ...

Old Library Books

As an avid reader of limited financial means I often find myself buying ex-library books from various websites. I understand that libraries have limited space and funds, and need to dispose of some books to free up the shelves and raise some money for new acquisitions. But some of the books I've bought in this way make me stop and think about the way disposals are done. My copy of Through Terror to Triumph, speeches by David Lloyd George in 1914 and 1915, has the bookplate of Manchester Central Library Reference Library - the Neville Laski Collection. Neville Laski was ...

If any good is to come from the tragic death of Sarah Everard it is that we all become more aware of the problems that are faced by women as they go about their day to day business. Overwhelmingly the ... Continue reading →

DON'T MISS OUT ON YOUR DEMOCRATIC RIGHTS Deadline to register to vote in the May elections: 11:59pm on Monday 19 April 2021. To be able to vote, you have to be on the electoral register and to do that, you have to fill in a simple online form. Completing other official paperwork, such as getting a passport, paying Council Tax or getting a driving license doesn't result in you being automatically added to the register. It is a separate process. You only need to register once; you don't need to register separately for every election. However, you do need to ...

This article was first published on Lib Dem Voice. The scenes on Clapham Common last night as the police broke up the vigil for Sarah Everard were a disgrace and undermine the fundamental principle of policing by consent. Leading Lib Dems have called on the Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick to resign. It was not a protest. It was a statement of solidarity with a woman who had been abducted from the streets of London and murdered. It was a declaration that women should be safe on the streets. Lib Dem Voice editor Caron Lindsay told of her personal experiences ...

The Nottingham News reports that a vigil took place at 6pm last night in which over a hundred people gathered around the Brian Clough statue just off Old Market Square to leave candles and flowers in tribute to 33-year-old Sarah Everard who was found dead earlier this week after going missing in London. This vigil took place within Covid guidelines and with the full co-operation of the local police force, in line with Friday's court judgement that such events were permissible if the authorities worked constructively with organisers to deliver them. In contrast, the Metropolitan Police, one of whose number ...

There's something about East Anglia - the long, straight roads; the pounds of decrepit lorries beside them - that recalls what US liberals mustn't call the flyover states. So it's not such a surprise to learn that Beth Orton grew up in Norfolk. As Pitchfork said in 2009: The disconnect between how Beth Orton was pitched to us and the way her music actually sounded was as vast as the barren landscape she fetishized. Instead of a lonesome troubadour traversing the desolate American West from carpark to carpark, Orton was a Norwich-born theatre chick who found herself in the midst ...

I recall some years back having need to phone a call centre based in Glasgow; I had no idea what the person talking to me on the other end of the line was on about as he was talking pure 'Glasgow patter'. My Grandad on my Dad's side who lived in Kirkby-In-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire for most of his life would say to me as a teenager that I had the worst Scouse accent he'd ever heard and that I was speaking far too quickly anyway for him to be able to work out what I was on about. I had been ...

In this weekend's world review, Tam Arms opines that Joe Biden's economic stimulus package will boost the world economy. A new space race is underway much of it led by Russia and China, and of course Elon Musk. Tom also talks about the Covid-19 vaccine controversies, overstretched health services across the world and the countries that are luring us with holidays. A thinktank has downgraded India - once trumpeted as the world's biggest democracy - to an "electoral autocracy". Back to China again with Tom's review of the annual National People's Congress. The American economic engine is on the tracks ...
