Second paragraph of third chapter:My hosts now were two graduate students, one male, one female, from the Revisionist History Department. In the noise I could not hear their names clearly. I liked them both and was attracted by their easy conversational style and, as an unsought-for bonus, by their apparent familiarity with several of the books I had written. Without going into my reasons in detail, I asked them both not to address me as Doctor, saying I preferred the use of my given name. They were fine with that. The ice was being broken in many different respects.Christopher Priest's ...

One of the most depressing and dangerous reactions to the current upsurge of Israeli and Palestinian violence in the Middle East has been the alarming rise in anti-Semitic incidents here in the UK. On 13th May the Jewish Times highlighted a 250 percent increase in reported anti-Semitic incidents since the start of the recent violence. Incidents include the now notorious video of racist abuse in North London, vile anti-Semitic abuse shouted at a Jewish schoolgirl, altercations outside synagogues and a swathe of anti-Semitic hate on social media, some of which I have witnessed. Whatever our opinions of the rights and ...

Jane Dodds knows what it's like to fight – and win – a parliamentary by-election. The entire party got behind her campaign to win Brecon and Radnorshire in 2019 so she's returning the favour by heading to Chesham and Amersham to help Sarah Green. Sarah is a fantastic candidate who would make a brilliant addition to our Westminster Parliamentary Party Come and get Sarah Green elected in Chesham and Amersham – great to be here. For many people the climate crisis is a remote phenomenon that has little bearing on their lives. Granted the weather is a bit more extreme and unpredictable, but for those of us living in the UK we have not yet seen the crop failures, famines and destructive weather patterns that have emerged elsewhere in the world as a result of global warming. That though, may change some time soon. The Guardian reports that new data from the British Geological Survey (BGS) suggests millions of homes are at increased risk of subsidence due to hotter and drier summers being driven by ...

A majority of those born in the 1950s have backed the winning side at every election in their lifetime. But those born in the 1990s have always lost. Stephen Lloyd served as Liberal Democrat MP for Eastbourne from 2010-2015 and 2017-19. He was a fantastic champion for the town and a brilliant campaigner who won against the odds in 2017. He promised his voters that he would not stand in the way of Brexit, even though he was a remainer and he kept that promise. That was not the path the party was on and for a time, he did not take the Liberal Democrat whip in the Commons. There was no animosity, though, and he remains a highly respected figure within the party. He announced yesterday that ...

i) births and deaths 19 May 1935: birth of Michael Wisher, who appeared as TV anchor Wakefield in The Ambassadors of Death (Third Doctor, 1970); factory owner Rex Farrel in Terror of the Autons (Third Doctor, 1971); Kalik in Carnival of Monsters (Third Doctor, 1973); most iconically as Davros in Genesis of the Daleks (Fourth Doctor, 1975); Magrik of the Vogans in Revenge of the Cybermen (also Fourth Doctor, 1975); Morelli in Planet of Evil (yet again, Fourth Doctor, 1975 - his third role in four stories); and Robar the ship's engineer in Shakedown (unofficial, 1994). Yesterday the Scottish Parliament chose its First Minister. Nicola Sturgeon was always going to win, although she is one short of an overall majority. Willie Rennie announced his intention to stand against her because "Most people did not vote for the largest party and it is important that their voices are heard." Conservative leader Douglas Ross followed suit. Willie gave a really strong speech, setting out the sort of country he wanted Scotland to be. He addressed the deep divisions in the country, which is pretty much split down the middle on independence and attacked both SNP and Conservatives for ...

There has recently been significant flooding at the south end of Roseangle - see photo below. I was therefore in touch with the Roads Maintenance Partnership to get this rather recurring issue resolved and was promised that a gully machine would be used to ensure the gullys are cleared and run free.

From The Negotiator: Analysis of house prices in all of the 124 districts, unitary and borough councils of England revealed that there's been a 13.2 per cent increase across Liberal Democrat ruled constituencies since the 2019 general election while Tory-led regions have seen a 1.7 per cent drop. The average house prices across Lib Dem and Conservative majority areas are £430,141 and £283,512 respectively. Labour-held areas have the lowest average house price at just £193,487, but this still marks an average rise of 8.3% since 2019. In this same period of time, the average house price for the whole of ...

Responding to reports that the Government is planning to grant tariff-free access to the UK to Australian farmers, Tim Farron MP, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, commented: "So often Conservative ministers take to social media to say how much they love British farming but their proposed new trade deal with Australia shows that when push comes to shove they are perfectly happy to sell our farmers down the river."The NFU are clear that letting Australian farmers sell their produce tariff-free into the UK would spell a disaster for small British family farms."Australian animal welfare standards are ...
