Second frame of third story: I've enjoyed Tomine's work before, and Anne kindly got this for my birthday, and I enjoyed it too. It's a set of vignettes from Tomine's life, most of them incidents of toe-curling embarrassment or micro-aggression, told in confessional or self-deprecating tone. Tomine's main subject is himself, though also the people he loves and the people he works with, and he makes us sympathetic and perhaps even understanding of the lifestyle of the self-employed artist. Some of the stories very funny indeed (eg the date where the people at the next table are disparaging his work, ...

We don't often cover our country's performance at the Eurovision Song Contest here on LDV, but Nigel Jones (the other one) used it as an opportunity to ask a serious question in the Lords. He asked Brexit minister Lord David Frost: Is the minister making any progress on negotiating a new deal for the creative sector touring Europe? While he's thinking of a plausible answer to that, when he decided in the negotiations to reject the EU's generous offer and threw touring musicians under a bus, did he anticipate, is he surprised by or does he accept any responsibility at ...

The Guardian reports on claims by a former Tory MEP that Muslim members of the Conservative party were deliberately excluded from an inquiry into Islamophobia within its ranks. Sajjad Karim, who represented north-west England in the European parliament for 15 years until 2019 called the party's complaints procedure "not fit for purpose" and urged Boris Johnson not to pursue an "English nationalist agenda". He said the long-awaited report that came out last week and found no evidence of "institutional Islamophobia" was a "whitewash", and said apologies from the prime minister for any offence he had caused were "insincere": Speaking to ...

The Federal Policy Committee will soon be meeting to discuss the establishment of new policy working groups. A petition has been submitted by 104 party members calling for the setting up of a working group on Defence and Disarmament issues. Here is what it says: We urge the FPC to recognise that since the party Conference last discussed issues related to nuclear weapons in 2017 the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons has been ratified and come into force. In addition, the UK Government is thought to have broken the nuclear non-proliferation treaty by deciding to increase the ...

Ahead of a potential vote on a tabled amendment to the Advanced Research and Invention Agency Bill on Monday, aiming to hold the Government to the 0.7% of GNI aid pledge, Liberal Democrat Foreign Affairs and International Development Spokesperson Layla Moran MP said: "The Conservative Government's decision to cut development spending has done extraordinary damage to Britain's reputation with our allies and partners from across the globe. In a week which will see the eyes of the world on the UK as we host the G7, now is the time for leadership - but instead, the Conservatives want Britain to ...

We should all be concerned that not only is this a populist government, but they are using Boris to ensure that the media sees every event from their point of view, thus brainwashing people into thinking that any criticism is not to be taken seriously. We have long complained about lack of attention to the Lib-Dem leader, but we should be concerned about the lack of attention to the Labour leader too. Conservatives are intent on squeezing any challenge to the margins, including a diminishing of the independence of the BBC and the case of Martin Bashir and Lord Hall ...

Numerous residents have contacted me this week about the overflowing bottle bank in Ashbank Road. I therefore asked environment management to have it emptied and the surrounding area tidied ASAP.

It's good to see Leicester's architecture celebrated like this, but Granby Street is a victim of earlier council schemes. When I first got to know Leicester, Granby Street was a serious shopping street. But the construction of first The Shires and then Highcross, which shifted the heart of the city's retailing back to where it had been in Roman and medieval times, left it out on a limb and the prestige shops have long departed from it. What will become of it in the long run remains to be seen, but om the mean time you can read more about ...
