I discovered by chance during the week that there are two very ancient churches in villages near us. I find this fascinating. Although one thinks of Ireland as a place with a lot of ancient history, in fact there are not a lot of ancient buildings which are still in use. In the town of my birth, Belfast, the title of Oldest Building is disputed between McHugh's Bar, behind the Albert Clock, and the Dirty Onion two blocks away on Hill Street. Neither is older than the late 17th century; the oldest buildings in New York are older than that. ...

Curious news from South Tyneside regarding Cllr John Robertson, as reported by The Shields Gazette: An independent councillor has dramatically resigned his seat - only to say he will stand again in the forthcoming by-election triggered to fill the vacancy. John Robertson who represented the Fellgate and Hedworth ward, resigned from South Tyneside Council, posting his resignation letter on Facebook and stating it was with 'immediate effect'. However, Mr Robertson then decided to retract his resignation, but was told this was not possible under laws governing councils. In his statement on Facebook Cllr Robertson said: The stress of the recent ...

Writing in the Scotsman as the G7 summit takes place in St Ives, Christine Jardine breathes a sigh of relief that we have a grown-up in the White House again and looks at how Joe Biden has been a good friend to the UK. Sometimes, she says, your best friends tell you the truth. She compared this summit to the Atlantic Charter, Churchill and Roosevelt's vision for the post war world: Eighty years later, Biden referenced that moment as he cast the other leaders in his shadow to declare that the United States will donate half a billion dozes of ...

I can remember being aware of Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames as a small boy in the 1960s - I think there was something about the fame/flame combination in their name that intrigued me. Almost 50 years later I saw Georgie Fame play at Market Harborough Leisure Centre with Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings. The Blue Flames were originally Billy Fury's backing band. When he sacked them, Fame took over as singer and they enjoyed great success. Yeh Yeh topped the UK singles chart in 1964 and may well be the record that first introduced me to them.

I do understand that effective communication requires a catchy phrase which encapsulates a story or scenario, but to be honest I expected better of the 'broadsheet' press than to characterise Boris Johnson's incompetent handling of the Northern Ireland protocol, Brexit and the Good Friday Agreement as plunging us into a 'sausage war'. The Independent headline is ''Sausage war' tensions heightened as Boris Johnson says he 'will not hesitate' to suspend protocol'. The paper says the Prime Minister has set the UK on track for a trade war with Brussels with a belligerent response to being ambushed over the Northern Ireland ...

There has been an acute outbreak of bipartisanship on Capitol Hill. It has been brought about by an even more acute outbreak of Sinophobia. It appears that the one—and possibly only—thing that upon which Democrats and Republicans can agree is their common fear of the rise of China. But most of all, they worry about they worry about defeat in the technology race which provides the essential tools for all the above. That is why the Senate this week voted by an overwhelming majority of 68 to 32 to pump $250 billion over five years into and development in America's ...

We are all tired of the epidemic. We all want life to get back to normal. But there is growing doubt that we will see a full relaxation of restrictions on 21 June. There is a notable growth in cases in England. In Scotland also but not in Wales where restrictions have been stricter for longer. Case levels in England are relatively low, averaging around 6,000 cases a day so far this month. Over the equivalent period in January at the peak of the second wave, we were witnessing 47,000 cases a day. But positive tests are increasing and again ...
