In March this year, a teacher at Batley Grammar School was suspended after cartoons of Muhammad (from the satirical French magazine Charlie Hebdo) were shown in class during a discussion about press freedom and religious extremism. Days of protests from a relatively small group of Muslims (allegedly parents) led to an unequivocal apology from theContinue reading "Batley and Spen by-election: What's liberal about capitulating to extremists?"

[IMG: Folkestone West Train Station Car Park from Shorncliffe Road (From Google Photos https://goo.gl/maps/qx1mxMR8tvtCmGFF7)] Not a Hedge, December 2020 [Google Streetview] As a part of a piece of casework for a local resident, I've been on the trail of a missing hedge... When 7 years ago, Folkestone West Train Station got its shiny new car park by Shorncliffe Road, one of the planning conditions was planting along the new fence by Shorncliffe Road. This would over time soften the border, reduce light spill from the car park, create a habitat, provide more oxygenators, food for animals: all the good things. ...

The pledge to 'level up' the left behind parts of England is key to what happens in English politics over the next 3-5 years and beyond (I say 'English' politics because the dominant political issues in the four nations of the UK seem to be diverging). Boris Johnson's promises to revive the towns and industrial communities of northern and coastal England have raised expectations, and won votes and seats. But even if he calls an election early in 2023 he will need to have demonstrated that commitment in increased expenditure to retain many of the votes won over in 2019. ...

Since I posted the first half of this blog (here's a link to part 1 – a fellow local environmental activist, Frank Sharp, has been in touch and he's suggested that the downed wooden owl may actually be the body of a carved spider. I had been told that there had been/maybe still is a 2nd carved piece of public artwork within this particular wood so Frank could well be right. For reference here's the photo again of the one I have seen and which we thought maybe an owl:- Well as for progress I have none to report. ...

There we were safe, and could rest. Everybody knows what sympathy was shown to the unfortunate French army, ...

Ollie Robinson (Photo: Indian Express) Whether or not you're a cricket fan, it's been difficult to escape from the controversy surrounding Ollie Robinson. Robinson made his debut for the England Test side this week and took seven wickets in the match in addition to scoring 42 with the bat. It wasn't quite as impressive a debut as Devon Conway's for New Zealand, but all the same it was a performance that showed real promise and cricket fans should be talking about Robinson's prodigious talent. But we're not. And the reason for this is that, on the day Robinson made his ...

I come originally from the South-East part of Poland. I was 10 when the Berlin Wall collapsed and I must admit that I didn't grasp the importance of these historical events, for my native country as well as the whole of Europe. I discovered its significance later on. In the last couple of weeks, I was reflecting on the journey of each one of the countries behind the "Iron Curtain". Slovakia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Czech Republic - they all did well and it is clear that a massive democratic transformation served them and their residents well. However, there is one ...

Today, Liberal Democrat Councillors in England and Wales will be getting an e-mail to vote in the elections for a number of positions on the Liberal Democrat Group on the Local Government Association (LGA). These include the Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group (also a Vice Chair of the LGA), Deputy Leader and a number of members of LGA Boards. A full list can be found here. All of the positions receive an allowance, ranging from £36,769 for Group Leader to £2,919 for Board members. The most interesting and important contests to my mind are those for Group Leader and ...

I do like paid-up members of the awkward squad, even Brexiteers, and you dont get more committed to that cause than David Davis, the Tory MP for Haltemprice and Howden who is a key part of the opposition to government plans to reduce the overseas aid budget from 0.7% of GDP to 0.5%. Davis is arguing that Boris Johnson risks throwing away "enormous influence" on the world stage with morally "devastating" overseas aid cuts that will lead to preventable deaths. His argument is that cutting aid will lead to a diminution of UK influence in key parts of the world ...
