This May's council elections saw two signs of Lib Dem performance headed in the right direction – more candidates, and a small net gain in seats, making it three years of net gains in a row for the first time since the Charles Kennedy era. There's plenty more progress still needed on both fronts. The Lib Dems still stand noticeably fewer candidates than either Labour or the Conservatives in England, and next year also sees the all-up council elections come around in Scotland and Wales. So I hope that in addition to more people than usual thinking about standing, more ...

Good to see another new feature go live on the party's Lighthouse system: letting local parties record their bank accounts and who their signatories are. It's surprisingly and frustratingly common for problems to arise when local party officers change and time passes and then that bank account set up for a special purpose falls redundant, the signatories left unchanged and memories start to fade... Hence the new feature so that all the information can be securely stored in a way that will make it more convenient for new local party officers, be proof against fading memories and also make it ...

This year everyone is urged to come together to Make Caring Visible and Valued. The campaign is brought to life by thousands of individuals and organisations who come together to provide support for carers, run activities, highlight the vital role carers play in our communities and draw attention to just how important caring ...

Thousands of businesses across the borough could be eligible for new discounts on business rates that come into effect on 1 July. However, applications must be submitted to receive the discounts after June. The discount is only available to occupied properties. However, if you had to close your business temporarily due to national lockdown restrictions, you can still qualify. The business rates discount for nurseries has also been extended. The BBC reports: The party said its previous candidate, Jo Conchie, was unable to stand in the 1 July poll due to health issues. Tom Gordon, a councillor in neighbouring Wakefield, has been selected to take her place. The election was triggered after the previous MP, Labour's Tracy Brabin, had to stand down when she was elected as West Yorkshire's mayor. Mr Gordon, who was born in West Yorkshire and is leader of Wakefield's Liberal Democrat group, said he was "delighted" to have been selected. I am pleased to announce that I am standing as the Liberal Democrat candidate at ...

Rishi Sunak's £4 billion cut to the overseas aid budget last November was a populist move, playing to the sections of the media that believe most aid is wasted and we should keep the money for ourselves. But the cut of almost a third from the budget is having an impact on relief and development projects, on education for girls and on the UK's standing in the developing and developed world. Backbench MPs are angry. So angry that a Conservative amendment to an unrelated bill of Monday looks like being supported, providing it is selected by the Speaker. This would ...

If anybody ever doubted the case for abolishing appointed peerages and creating an elected secodn chanber, the surely this story must dispel such misgivings. The Independent reports that a scandal-hit banker gifted the Tories half a million pounds after Boris Johnson gave him a seat in the House of Lords against official advice. The paper says newly released Electoral Commission records record that three days after he was introduced in the Lords as a Tory peer Peter Cruddas handed £500,000 to Conservative central office: Lord Cruddas, a former Tory treasurer, had been subject to objections from the Lords sleaze watchdog ...

The Joy of Six 1011

"History at Oxford and Cambridge will be fine. The risk is that its study will be focused in institutions which are more commonly the preserve of the middle-class student. That its questions and challenges are less accessible to those on the wrong side of History's tracks." Sir Keith Burnett explains why universities need the humanities as well as sciences. James Butler looks at Dominic Cummings' appearance in front of the Commons inquiry into the government's handling of the pandemic: "The fantasy of the philosopher-king - or in this case, the scientist-king - is the oldest expression of oligarchical resentment at ...
