Second paragraph of third story ("Cardiac Arrest"):After seventy-eight minutes of holding, the daily Pan-Pac Boeing from San Diego was signalled down on to Emergency Runway A. Careful not to infringe Chinese air space, it circled down across sea and land. The delay had been caused by a plane on a local flight, which had crashed and blocked a main runway. The passengers could see the dark smudge of smoke drawn across the field, impersonal, remote from human lives and deaths.Aldiss is one of my favourite writers, but I don't think this is one of my favourite collections. As predicted "Freedon Day", when covid restrictions were due to be lifted, has been postponed from 21 June. And as usual most of the sceptical comment seems to have missed the point. They are suggesting that the government will keep on postponing through dither and indecision. But in fact I thought the government was being ... Continue reading How do we live with Covid-19?

Today I again went to Chesham & Amersham to help Sarah Green and team. I helped to deliver targeted letters to residents in Great Missenden and Chalfont Saint Peter. My task was greatly assisted by my excellent co-deliverers, Baroness (Liz) Barker and Mukta Patil from Chesham & Amersham Young Liberals. They both greatly helped in plotting our various routes and in making the task a great pleasure in the sunshine! The selfie above shows us with our suitably coloured conveyance! It is great to see the Lib Dem by-election machine in over-drive. They have already sorted out bundles for me ...

At the end of the recent G7 meeting, participants declared their commitment to 'democracy, freedom, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights'. How many had fingers crossed behind their backs? Boris Johnson for one, but probably others, spared their own blushes by the blatant fraudulence of their host regarding Northern Ireland. But it is not just Northern Ireland. Last week his government declined its obligations under Common Article 1 of the 1949 Geneva Conventions, 'to ensure respect for the present Convention in all circumstances'. After Israel's recent punitive and extensive destruction of life and property in the ...

As Refugee Week begins, the Liberal Democrats have tabled a motion in Parliament calling on the Government to establish safe and legal routes for refugees to come to the UK. The motion, tabled by the party's Home Affairs Spokesperson Alistair Carmichael MP, calls on the Government to resettle 10,000 refugees each year, as well as a further 10,000 unaccompanied refugee children from elsewhere in Europe over the next 10 years. It follows Home Office data showing that just 353 refugees were brought to the UK last year, compared with 4,968 the year before. Liberal Democrat Home Affairs Spokesperson Alistair Carmichael ...

Keir Starmer doesn't talk about Brexit much anymore. He's desperate to leave the issue behind; for everyone to "move on" and stop talking about a subject that has bizarrely helped further destroy the Labour party while making the Tories electorally invincible. And yet, there are days when he can't help himself. Yesterday was one of those days. Speaking on LBC, Starmer started off by taking Boris Johnson to town on the issue of the Northern Ireland protocol. "We do need to remind the prime minister that he signed on the dotted line: this is what he negotiated. If he's saying ...

The Guardian's editorial on the changes needed to lobbying laws is spot on. They argue that public trust is damaged when a former PM and ministers are caught up in a cronyism scandal, and must be repaired. The recommendations of Lord Evans, chair of the committee on standards in public life (and a former head of MI5), includes a ban on ministers and senior civil servants lobbying for five years after leaving office, that the public appointments watchdog should get new powers, including the right to prevent ministers taking certain jobs and a proposal for new penalties for rule-breakers. Lord ...

Many thanks to the residents who recently highlighted to me that the fence at Pleasance Court on the corner of Brook Street and Brewery Lane is rather badly damaged. I contacted the factors Ross & Liddell who now have matters in hand - the fence was hit by a vehicle and the driver has given Ross & Liddell insurance details.
